I bought an older 8274–50 winch a while ago and getting around to rebuilding it and have established it is in need of a motor. What are you all running? I have heard there are upgrades but I am not looking for anything crazy. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated TIA.

let me look around. I think I have an older used motor.

You can buy the 4.6hp motor. It's a direct swap (assuming you have the matching spur gear), and is what comes on the 8274-50. You can also do the 6.0hp motor, but it sometimes breaks cases.

Pretty sure you can do a half 9500 motor on the 8274. Good luck with getting some one to help you spool it in tho. Supposedly you can ski with it

Even with the factory motor on my old one, it's no load line speed is like 80 ft/min. I can't imagine it being any faster!

That’s crazy !! I don’t plan on a huge motor but I figure if I have to buy one it might as well get the job done. It sounds like I’ll wear a neck brace during any future winching operations.

You should check out Gigglepin 4x4. They have upgrades for the 8274 that run dual motors and upgraded cases. It's beautiful stuff but high $$$

Went ahead and bought the 7536 4.6hp motor. Summit had an Easter 10%. And I had some Christmas gift cards. @shawn thanks for the links. I always search the wrong thing and then feel like an idiot when someone links a thread.

I knew where they were, so posted the links.

I couldn't imagine a faster motor on one of those, the line speed from the factory is so fast, the only way I could keep up with it is to run down hill! Still one of my favorite winches ever built, I think it's the noise it makes.

Best winch ever! Fast and makes the ching ching noise! Had one on my cj7.
