hey guys me again, that truck is coming this week and the guy says only issue with the drivetrain was the trans hops out of gear when you're not giving it gas/pulling/moving or holding the shifter in gear while just loping???i guess he means if your accelerating at any speed or at least moving forward with some kind of throttle it does fine,no grinding, no noises, just hops out of gear when you let off the gas and coasting...does it in every gear he said. Anyone know if this is major, minor and anyone around Boone area works on these/could work on this issue/estimate of how much i'm looking at fixing it. would it be whole rebuild or just one part that does that. he says it drives fine if you hold the shifter in gear and never made any noises or grinds, just started popping out of gear last 6months of driving when coasting.
thank you for your help with this and anyone who can work on this that is reasonably close to me, would be great to have estimate of fixing specific problem or maybe rebuild some other stuff while your there for preventative maintenance??? any help is greatly appreciated!

i would say it's most likely a bearing issue. on that trans, the input shaft is the bearing race for the mainshaft. if the mainshaft bearing is worn it allows the shafts to no longer operate in a straight line.
sounds good...is that a expensive fix, cheaper fix, or one of those might as well rebuild the whole thing while there type of deal..

and thank you for your input transman!!

cool...i've got 1000 in my budget to fix the trans/rebuild it...would that cover in general speaking ....and again thanks for your help or is that something i could do or too intriquete to do if never done before...i would love to learn but would this be good one to "practice" on lol

Depending on the drivetrain, I've heard the ZF manual behind the diesels are stoopid $$ just for the parts, with single gears being $500-600 *each*

well a friend up here can put all new bearings, seals and syncros in for 1000 so I will go that route if i don't find nothing else that could've been causing it...once i get the truck tomorrow morning hopefully, he, the owner, believes it's the clutch, pilot bearing, or throw out bearing that's the issue but ??? we'll see once i get it. shifts smooth and quiet as can be so we know the gears are good..i guess syncros would def be the culprit if everything else checks out..

You must have more $$ than I. I'd hate to spend $1000 on that transmission for it to only be worth $750 even after you spent the $1000

i wasn't aware of that. i was under the impression that these were the better/more expensive/more desired transmissions to have. But, I'm building this truck to be my family DD and Reliable Tow Rig so money well spent if i go that route....being so easy to pull and put, i'm gonna just put it in the truck first and drive it and see how it is first...then assess from there.

a clutch won't make it jump out of gear
good to know! btw, is there supposed to be a pilot bearing in the crank?? cause the motor doesn't have one and i can tell there's never been one in there....i'm a newby with this stuff i guess....are some manual transmissions that don't require Pilot bearings in the crank for the shaft to ride on.

There's supposed to be a pilot bearing.

so does that mean someone changed motors from an Auto and never put one in?? he never had it changed since they owned it in 07 and he's pretty sure the previous owners (his family member) had it since new and they think motor is original..:wtf:so i'm pretty stumped. thank you shawn

It could be that the needles are gone.
i thought this but there's nothing in there. i've seen several on jeeps that have needles gone but the housing is there. This is clean ans whistle and no sign of one ever being put in...if someone changed motor and didn't put pilot bearing in, would the trans still act ok or is that something that wouldn't have been noticed right away??? i will take a closer look again today but i swear i didn't see any marks of anything in the crank. thank u

Motor could be original but someone changed out the crank. Maybe someone put a brass pilot bushing in there instead
There are a million reasons why it wouldn't have a bearing...

Post a pic

Isn't the truck already in pieces?

yeah, the bed, trans, motor, and gas tanks are all off along with carpet inside...he started the restore process years ago and left it as it is...lost interest so now i got it..pretty amazing how rust free it is though. the frame is about as solid and rust free as you could imagine, the cab is awesome shape as far as body and rust free, floor pans only 1spot in the corner of drivers side about size of golf ball, other than that clean as whistle.

There was some issue with how they put the cabs together or how they treated them or something. They all rusted through right there.

that's what another guy said today when looking at it...

hey ford guys...getting ready to set transmission and motor in tomorrow morning SOOO is there supposed to be a backing plate thingy like a lot of other motors have..that thin metal plate that is the size of the whole motor and bellhousing cause this ford is missing it????unless it doesn't have one...i can't tell if there was ever one or not...i would say no because the back of the block is little dirty and usually behind those plates the blocks stay very clean since it's mostly sealed..just wanting to make sure before i put it in the truck. thank you

I think I've got one that went between a 302 and a T5 out of my Mustang, if you can find out if that will work for you, I'll find out if that is what I've got.
