I wouldn't ask a bunch of people in NC for advice about building a house in Alaska. I would ask people in Alaska.
Single story or two story? A two story will usually be more efficient per square foot in terms of surface-area-to-volume ratio than a single story, so usually lower heat loss, also less cost in truss and roof area and attic insulation. There are trade-offs there though, like boring looking houses.
Spent 2 years total working up there between Anchorage and Fairbanks and really enjoyed most of the time up there except this time of year. I like southern AK much better than where Nick is talking about building mainly due to the climate and terrain. I have literally went fishing and gotten tired of taking them off the hook I caught so many so fast.
Been there done all that Copper River Reds is where it’s at. When we weren’t working, hunting, or fishing we spent a lot of time drinking. Hung out at The Elf’s Den, The Speedway, The Badger Den, The Blue Loon, The Howling Dog. Let me know if I can help you along the way.But the good news is that Delta is like 2 hours away, and Valdez 5ish and Anchorage 6ish. Valdez is an awesome place to camp and fish.
Before this thread I had never thought about the aspects of building in extreme cold/arctic. Definitely sparked my curiosity with it.
The part that I would never had thought of is heating elements on the sewer drain, septic tank, and drain field.
Done wrong that could turn into a real shitty situation.
