Well that last part is good to know because rum and coke is my go to.Remember, water quality is always an issue in Mexico, so anything that is rinsed in water, or made of water (home made ice) is suspect. Stick to refrigerated beer and bagged ice which is at least made with filtered water. Inside the resorts the water systems run through filtration systems, so you are usually safe there. I've been to Cancun three times, Acapulco once and Cozumel twice. One of our trips to Cancun, a friend rented a convertible Beetle and we cruised around the strip and took it off road a little. We ended up too close to a military zone because when we got to a fence line, they scrambled a couple of Jeeps to chase us off. Honestly the most scared I've ever been when the Beetle backfired.
We did venture out a couple times in Cancun. Ate some questionable, but VERY tasty authentic Mexican. No Montezuma's Revenge, but the all you can drink Tequila Shooters hit hard.
Bear in mind in most all inclusive resorts, the alcohol is cheaper than the mixers, so a Rum and Coke will be mostly rum.
Most of the flight to the Caribbean arent long. Take an Ambien when you sit down... or have a few drinks before boarding, and then go to sleep. I have flown so much that i dont need the alcohol. Normally get a window seat and put my headphones in and pass out. Sadly i can only sleep for an hr or so... even on a transatlantic. I dont mind flying, it is the airports I hate. Maybe one day Ill be able to afford private flights. Her office is still trying to figure out where we are going. I suggested it be an adults only resort. Now I am just trying to get over my fear of flying. Been having dreams about flying recently....nothing bad happens, I just wake up and get that anxiety of being 30-40k feet in the air....
Yeah, looks like a flight from Charlotte to Cancun is about 3 hours, which is 1 hour longer than any previous flight I've been on. The idea of packing to go on vacation and driving to the airport and seeing planes fly fascinate me and its really exciting until I think about actually boarding the plane and thinking about being so high with nothing beneath me. I already have anxiety as it is. In my mind, I know that I am going to be safe but its something about the idea of flying that scares the crap outta me. The last flight I took was to NY back in 2010. 55 minute flight and I was a wreck the whole way there. I know there will need to be some sort of medicating before hand to help ease my nerves. Most of the flight to the Caribbean arent long. Quoted for truth!I dont mind flying, it is the airports I hate.
My wife saw that they had Jameson on the island beach bar (I like a little from time to time), so she asked for some straight up - they gave her a 16oz glass-full!Remember, water quality is always an issue in Mexico, so anything that is rinsed in water, or made of water (home made ice) is suspect. Wow! That reminds me of when the wife and I went on our first cruise to the Bahamas. We ventured out to this beach and we ended up getting a table with some chairs right by this little hut that served drinks. It was about 8;30 in the morning and the lady came up to us and asked if we wanted any drinks. I sort of looked her funny at first and then I said " what the hell?, why not?" She brought us over a bucket of beers. ( I think it was 8 beers for $10). A little while later these 2 girls came up to the hut and ordered something called a "Bitch Slap" they took there drinks back to wherever they were and about 2 minutes later, they came back to the hut and complained that the drinks were too strong and wanted more juice. First time I had ever heard of anyone returning a drink because they were too strong. My wife saw that they had Jameson on the island beach bar (I like a little from time to time), so she asked for some straight up - they gave her a 16oz glass-full!
She brought it to me & I shot it. Whew.
Sounds like they needed a bitch slap.Wow! That reminds me of when the wife and I went on our first cruise to the Bahamas. lol That's what I said!Sounds like they needed a bitch slap.
Planes now are safer than ever. And flights to resort areas have the happiest flyers anywhere, which makes the environment a lot better. Get a few drinks and strike up some conversations with neighboring strangers. You’ll learn a lot and be there before you know it.
In Mexico, even the locals don’t drink the water and they are suspicious of salads that they didn’t prepare themselves. The salad tip is a good one. The only time I ever stayed at a resort was in Cabo and can confirm the drinks where we stayed were also mixed strong - which made me happy. I’ll also echo the comments about not being afraid to do things outside of the resort. Do your research before you go. Some have online booking now.
If you go to Cancun, you can pop over to Cozumel, rent a scooter, and cruise around the entirety of the island. There’s a cool chocolate shop and some smaller ruins sites there that are cool to explore.
You’re going to have to haggle like a mofo to buy souvenirs. Obvious tourist = at least double price. If you can’t get it for at half price, you haven’t negotiated hard enough. Everyone here hates low-ballers, but that’s exactly what you need to be to get a ‘normal’ price at a shop near a resort area. Have cash and be ready to walk away if terms aren’t met quickly.
