AMC T5 vs T176

It's really not that bad to rebuild. It was the first trans i have ever done. I'm pretty mechanically inclined an really didn't have much trouble. I found a YouTube video that had just enough information to leave you with a few extra questions, but got me through it. I actually thought about pulling it apart again to do a video, but didn't.

I'm guessing a press is mandatory. Did you measure endplay or just take it apart and throw it back together? I'm sure I can handle it but I've been doing too much reading and I think I got overwhelmed with some people being way too meticulous.

I'm mostly curious as to why it leaks so damn bad and how bad must a bearing be to destroy a seal bad enough to lose a quart of lube a week. FWIW it shifts and functions fine but its getting pretty growly and rattly on deceleration in 1st and 2nd.

I don't believe i used my press. I definitely measured end play. I'm a machinist, so that's nothing new to me. There are thrust bearings in it so i believe that is really important.
Mine did the same. It was getting loud. I think i had to replace the input shaft, or one of the shafts because a bearing took it out. A needle bearing going to overdrive was crapped out too.
I agree a bearing probably has to be pretty bad if that's what made the leak happen.

Exactly knowing what to look for and how to measure the end play is my biggest hurdle. Parts swapping I can do all day long.

No experience with a T4 or T5, My 85 CJ-7 had 265K on it when the Odometer quit working. Wheeled it and DD'd it another 10 plus years. When through 3 258's and when I did the 360 swap I did change the front bearing in my T176, Only issue I ever had with it. I did have to make a pilot bushing for the 360 crank, since the engine was never designed to have a T176 behind it. Was in it still when it was retired in 2010.
