I'm guessing a press is mandatory. Did you measure endplay or just take it apart and throw it back together? I'm sure I can handle it but I've been doing too much reading and I think I got overwhelmed with some people being way too meticulous. It's really not that bad to rebuild. It was the first trans i have ever done. I'm pretty mechanically inclined an really didn't have much trouble. I found a YouTube video that had just enough information to leave you with a few extra questions, but got me through it. I actually thought about pulling it apart again to do a video, but didn't.
I don't believe i used my press. I definitely measured end play. I'm a machinist, so that's nothing new to me. There are thrust bearings in it so i believe that is really important.I'm mostly curious as to why it leaks so damn bad and how bad must a bearing be to destroy a seal bad enough to lose a quart of lube a week. FWIW it shifts and functions fine but its getting pretty growly and rattly on deceleration in 1st and 2nd.
Exactly knowing what to look for and how to measure the end play is my biggest hurdle. Parts swapping I can do all day long.I don't believe i used my press. I definitely measured end play. Mine did the same. It was getting loud. I think i had to replace the input shaft, or one of the shafts because a bearing took it out. A needle bearing going to overdrive was crapped out too.
I agree a bearing probably has to be pretty bad if that's what made the leak happen.
