Ever seen a dried out real tree burn in a living room? I have. Fake for me.
Wow I can not imagine that,I have seen one burn outside. We actually have a big Christmas Burning Party every year.It is Unbelievable to watch them go up.That being said we were finally gonna start a tradition this year of ditching the fake tree and getting a cabin in the mountains, going and cutting down a tree. Now with my Daughter being on strict bed rest we just bought a live one.I forgot how nice it is to walk out in the living room and smell that.It really takes me back.

We are on a budget this year so I'm going to use the real one left over from last year that I didn't around to burning yet. Now I don't have to worry with filling the base with water! I figure a little green paint and it'll be good as new. Lights are a PITA, so we are going to use candles on the tree instead :D

Sounds lie ka fantastic plan to me. Be sure to use a nice poly coating on top of the paint, right befor you add the candles.

We buy real trees.
But we don't get thenice one that every kid thinks is cool. We go to the back corner of the lot and "rescue" the Charlie Brown tree, the one that we know will go lonely and unloved and into the chipper. The one with a bent top and a side that is malshapen - the ugly tree.

It makes the rest of our house look nicer.

Real tree -

Bought from Awspence's family tree farm, have been for past 3 years. I will say I have 2 other artificial trees in the house, but they dont look quite as good.

Best memories - going with my grandfather to cut down a cedar somewhere on their farm land when i was a young'un

This reminded me... when we bought our house a little over 8 years ago (closed the end of September) there was a little evergreen tree in the back yard, against the fence, that looked pretty pitiful. It was mostly brown and we figured it was a 'live' tree from the previous Christmas that hadn't been planted very well... there were definitely other shrubs suffering from that in the yard.

Once we closed on the house, we went out to take a closer look... it had no roots! It was a cut three "left over from last year" that had been stuck in the yard in a hole. Knowing what we did about the little hippie chick we bought the place from, probably so the birds could nest in it or something. :shaking:

That's crazy.
You should see what happens when we pile 20 of them up and light them at the yearly party. You seriously have to turn your back on the fire to keep it from burning your face.Y'all should come it's in East Raleigh and we pile up trees for two weeks we collect from the side of the road. It's a big get together.

that is real time too. the chair on the right spontaniously combusts at 0:45 sec. I wish I could find the one that has the guy narrating what the temperatures inside the room on the floor. I respect Christmas trees. Please don't leave them plugged in at night or while you're not home...

scary, maybe

There's a mythbusters episode about this. If I recall correctly, they couldn't get the lights to start a fire. Perhaps if you had a short? I do follow your advice, though. The lights aren't on unless someone is around to keep an eye o the tree.

Just let us know!

Grew up cutting a real cedar from the woods on the farm.
These days the wife insists on a fake one..it is much easier so I dont complain but I feel like we are robbing our kids.

BTW just to start an argument and share some ino most arent aware of. Go ahead and water the tre if you want, but once you cut the trunk the tree loses its ability to suck water. There is no need to water cut tree...the only water that is absorbed is what is "absorbed" into the trunk touching the base..it'll never get to the needles.

Growing up, we always had a fake tree, so when I was out on my own, I have always had a real one. That said, Leslie and I were just discussing getting a fake one. No more mess, No watering, no brown tree. Not sure yet how we will go. As for the smell couldn't you get some of those little air fresheners you hang from the rear view mirror?

I'm not going to argue the science of it, but I doubt just the bottom 6" of my trunk absorbs close to 2 gallons of water a day for the first 2 weeks.

it doesn't..the rest evaporates into the air.

I'll perform an experiment tonight. Full tree base and 1 gallon of water in a pot beside the tree. I will see which one is empty in the morning.

I was told by the owner of the tree farm that a FRESH cut tree will continue to use water for a while as long as it does not get dry. It must be put in water within a few hours of being cut, not days or weeks like all the trees sitting around in parking lots. If you let the base get dry once after being placed in a base with water, it will stop taking up water. That is what I was told by a supposed expert. Could be right, could be wrong. I will search the interweb for answers.

real tree. going to get it now with the fam. it's not just having a real tree but also the experience of going to a farm, picking one out and cutting it down.

The wife and I have this discussion almost every year. I prefer a real tree and she likes a fake one. We used to alternate every other year but now we have a nice fake one and just been using it the last couple of years. Plus with the (almost) 3 year old twins the water and sap of a real tree would be a pain. We will go back to a real one in a year or two.

Real Tree. Some friends and I usually load up in a couple of trucks and make an annual trip across a couple of mountains on an old gravel road and pick out our trees from an old timer with a secluded tree farm. It takes all day. We make two stops along the way. Stop #1 is to pay our respects to an old Confederate grave and #2 is a country store for a sandwich.

IMO there is no substitue for the feel, look, and smell of a live tree.

And as many have mentioned the tradition of piling up as many as possible and burning them is alway a big hit.

That time of year again so here is a bump
