I am usually pretty good at IDing snakes , but this one has me a little confused. I think it is a brown water snake. What say yee? Oh and I only have the pic to go off, a friend sent this to me from his back yard. This is a bridge over a small creek.

I can tell you from any pic that a snake isn't poisonous, since none are, lol.

However, the head shape isn't the best way, as non-VENOMous snakes can flatten their heads when scared to try and emulate a venomous snake.

Maybe they could be poisonous if you ate them

Bumping this up

Wife just sent me these pictures of one climbing up a big magnolia our kids love to play on / around / climb. What we got here? It's a baby but I see no yella tail so I'm saying no copperhead.

This another banded watersnake?

Can poisonous snakes climb? Seems like I remember being told they could not or did not. Don't remember which.

You are exactly right poisonous snakes can't climb. 😉

Some venomous ones can I believe. The best way to identify if it is venomous is by the shape of the head. The presence of venom glands will cause the head to be shape differently. Based on the coloring of the snake I would say it is a rat snake.

lol My father in law used to breed Boa's and he would always correct people when they asked if a certain snake was poisonous. I never knew the difference until I met him, and he never let me forget it.

Snakes that have cat eye pupils are poisonous in N.C. Snakes w round pupils are ok unless it's Coral snake and they are easily identified and they also have to gnaw on you to get ya. If you're ever bit by any snake that latches onto to you DO NOT grab it and yank it off. Grab it's neck behind it's head and push it forward and try to open it's mouth to push the teeth out of your skin. Their fangs and teeth curve back toward their throats, if you pull back on the head you will drive the teeth deeper into your skin and some will break off and now you got a bunch of snake teeth splinters in you skin to remove....ask me how I know. Also snake saliva is not good for you so wash the wound well asap w antiseptic or soap and water or water if that's all you got.

Moccasins that are far from water have a nasty stink like rotten meat or dead fish. They have glands that put off a bad smell. If you smell it you better look where you step and where you walk. If you walk in a dried up swamp in a summer drought you will smell them. They can look just like another stick/branch laying on the ground w algae on them.

I passed by what I thought was a rattler on Old Lowgap Rd. A couple of days ago. It turned out to be a copperhead that had a very dark pattern. He had been ran over and was not alive, darkest one I’ve ever seen.

We saw a northern water snake in PA that looked like a very dark copperhead at first glance.
