they said on the news last night that people are stealing manhole covers and scrapping them. folks are falling down the holes and sueing the city.

Wouldnt the scrap yard think its kinds suspiscious someone is selling a manhole cover that belongs to the state? I have never read a manhole cover but doesnt it have some markings to prove its state owned? I dont buy this :poop:

We have 2 landscape companies that we have security and camera systems in that have added electric fences. Talking to one the other day while servicing a camera he was laughing that he loves to watch his video now because he gets to watch punks grab a 15,000 volt fence! They had a massive theft one time and lots of smaller ones and put the fence in and now it they haven't had any.

Having scrapped quite a lot of stuff, best way to do it is when your scrapping a car, fill it with old housings and whatever else, they pay more for a car than loose scrap, so I would assume the people are putting the manhole covers in the cars/trucks they are scrapping.

Never had the guys look through it other than to check underneath for the drainplugs, could probably hide a body in one of them and they wouldn't be the wiser, just use someone elses ID for that one lol

Those electric fences can be leased at a reasonable rate. I have a customer who own a big wrecker service in Rock Hill. People were breaking into the impound yard and stealing everything off the cars. It was costing him a small fortune to replace it all. I was there when they turned the fence on for the first time. The staff were kinda' scoffing at it, and making jokes about it not being strong enough to keep a crack head from climbing it. The installer offered up a 100 dollar bill to the biggest guy there that he couldnt hold on to it for a 3 count. He didnt make it to one and a half! He actually peed in his pants when it hit him. He said the fillings in his teeth were buzzing!

ok do you have any contact info on this co.?

Man you have had alot of mowers stolen from your place! I wanna see where you store em, there has to be something you can do to prevent this from happening without having to spend too much coin! I like the electric fence idea though!

LKQ has these fences at both yards in Clayton/Durham as do some of the LTL freight companies. I had to work near one yesterday, I wasn't happy being that close to it.

But they tell me they're quite effective, and no joke, and they pulse, so it's on off on , you might cut one wire but......

^ Pulsing - thats a great idea! ha ha have fun with them criminals!

Dogs don't always work. I helped my brother on a landscaping job several years ago. We were working beside a place that had high razor wire fence and 2 big Dobermans. We were warned to stay away from them or we could be hurt bad. A challenge! With in 2 days we had the dogs eating hotdogs from us and letting us pet them. Boy was the guy pissed when he found us playing with his "killer" dogs. :D Last day there my brother got both dogs out and tied them to his fence and gave them water and food. His neighbor told us he was really upset when he found his dogs tied up.

Getting hit three times is crazy, what ever became of the cement barrier idea?

its been 6 times this year the got inside three times breaking the glass i put up expanded metal and installed tempered glass so far thats kept them out but now there back to the outside lot
we got i think like 12 of them so now they cant drive the mowers out but they cut the fence again and got what they could lift over the barriers IE two pressure washers.....

My dad went thru this (small engine shop)... added fencing & alarm system. After a few smash & grabs, they simply sledgehammered a hole thru the cinderblock wall and came in! We'd started cabling ALL the new equipment (saws/trimmers/etc), so when they tried to snatch a couple big Stihls, they pulled the shelf over tripping one of the beam sensors... cops busted them 5 miles away ("ring" out of TN IIRC)

Eventually, the insurance company will cancel out ALL policies (liability/theft/fire) and you'll be forced to close down... :(

I'd start takin turns stayin over night with a shot gun loaded with either rocksalt or dragons breath, or screw it and light their damn vehicle up with an ak or ar.

discharge of firearms in city limits is probably cheaper than losing more mowers.

Just for the record, you night as well shoot them with buckshot. If you shoot a trespasser with salt, they can sue you and own your company.
Man it sucks to have stuff stolen, someone drilled holes in our Cherokee and Tacoma just to steal $40 worth of gas.

Shoot the vehicle then.

rode by the shop today everything was intact just waiting to see if anything goes on tonight
I'd be sitting there right now and throughout the night waiting on them. We've had too many burglaries around my community so when something suspicious happens everyone is up with loaded guns. We had one this spring that came and stole my neighbors four wheelers and were dumb enough to come back a second time after stealing one with a truck with loud tires and pipes. Let's just say after getting out the truck this time they were held at gunpoint until the cops came. They finally decided to come clean knowing they had a long record behind them and are now going to prison!

I went to the scrap yard with my mountain dew cans and saw a sign requiring permits from the court house for all copper. Maybe this will cut back thieves a little.

I work at CPI Security and we have a bunch of promos including free camera. Let me know if you want more details.
