Well, I'm looking at buying a Tacoma. The owner wasn't sure of the year, but it's around 96-99. It has roughly 150K on it, hasn't been driven in three years, but looks solid overall aside from the grime. It has the 3.4L, 5-speed, extra cab short bed, and the TRD package. He threw out a quick number of $3,000. What's your thoughts? It was parked simply because he has money and just didn't drive it any longer.

What is the guys number?

:D

He doesn't know the year?

Does he have the title?

Is this truck stolen and are you about to get into a bad situation?

Aside from all that, buy it.

Yes, he's the legal owner and has a title. His business has been in existence here for many years, so I trust him, but I'll be investigating it as thoroughly as I can. As for the year, he was thinking it was a '96.

The part about it being parked for three years doesn't bother any of you? I know I'd be pulling the fuel tank and such.

I think the 96-97 were cool looking rigs. Check the frame, Toyota bought most of them back as a frame recall several years back. Just check the frame well.

this would/could also increase it's value if in good shape, harder to find the early body Taco's because of the rusted frames and the buy back, they were crushed, not parted.

Tap around the spring hangers with a ball peen hammer. IIRC, that was one of the more rust prone areas. If it is in good shape, buy it. Unless you wreck it, it will still be worth 3K 10 years from now. Look at the price of 2nd and 3rd gen yota pickups.

Have you seen the price of 1st and 2nd gen Tacomas ? yer not getting a 2nd gen for less than 10k unless it has some pretty serious body damage, especially if its a crew cab.

I was talking mainly about the price of 84-95 pickups. One in good condition (mostly stock) is worth $3k or more. With that thought, an 86 (10 years older than the one the OP is looking at) is still worth the asking price for the truck the OP is looking at. If one 10 years older is holding this value, there is NO reason a 96 wont still be worth the original 3k in 10 more years. 3K is probably the bottom out price for a decent yota.

Toyota people create a self-fulfilling prophecy about resale value :D

Of course the newbie runs across the thread talking about jeep and toyota prices.... . when she's combing the area for a jeep, and the hubs has a recently discovered obsession with 4 door tacomas.. o_O

I went to check it out further today. It is a '96 model, non-TRD model. I'm not worried about the TRD part. The last one I owned, I removed everything that made it a TRD anyways with the exception of the locker. Interior is flawless, frame is in perfect shape for a truck of this age, and "most" of the body is in good shape. It will need a right front fender and passenger door from where it was wrecked previously and repaired poorly. Transmission goes into every gear, t-case shifts, it'll need the airbag cover on the steering wheel replaced, and a set of tires. I'm definitely going to bring this thing home! Oh, and it's been parked five years, not three, according to the inspection sticker on the windshield. Anyone here able to run a Carfax?

How long has it been since we have had inspection stickers? PO may have just not removed the old sticker the last couple years. You should have a pretty decent truck on your hands after changing the belts, hoses, filters, and every fluid. Drop the tank and clean it out really well. Run a couple tanks of 93 octane with fuel system cleaner. After sitting for that long, the injectors may be a little gummed up. You can send them off to get cleaned/rebuilt for 1/4 the price of new injectors. I have had good service from fuelinjectorconnection.com
