Any thru hikers?

Sorry guys I have not logged in a checked my posts for a while as I have been going non stop since January. I have all my gear in line and at some point will post a complete gear list. I have done many shake down hikes and know the gear inside and out. I have already returned, and exchanged numerous items but I guess that comes with the process and is exactly what shake down hikes are for.

I head to Springer March 11th, and start my hike March 12th. That is 18 days! It's getting closer and time is flying by. I'm currently in Maine but head back to NC tomorrow. I've been up here for the last few weeks saying bye to my family here.

I'll be keeping a journal on www.trailjournals.com my journal is not live yet as I have 2 of the 3 entries needed before it goes live. It will be live on their site before I leave for Springer. You can simply look up my name (Chris Nadeau) once it is live and it will show you my entries by date.

That will be the best way to track me as I doubt I'll have time to log onto the forums, although NC4x4 will most certainly be the first one I log into if I get the chance!

Thanks to all whom posted in this thread, every bit of advice was taken into account. For those of you who will be following me on trailjournals.com enjoy! You'll definitely be seeing the nice, pissed off, tired, and so on sides of me to say the least.

Good luck, Chris! I'll be checking your progress. I've hiked about 600 miles of section over the years with Boy Scouts and look forward to your updates!

11. On the Beaten Path - Robert Alden Rubin

If you've read some of these books, heard about them, or know people who have read them, let me know what you think.

I read that one years ago. It kept my attention and I enjoyed it. Condensed version:
- Guy is overweight, out of shape, and unhappy with his job and life in general.
- Guy buys a bunch of gear and starts testing it out as often as he can.
- Guy is still out of shape and unprepared, but he gets his wife to drop him off at the trail head.
- Guy thinks he's going to die of exhaustion on Day 1.
- More days of guy thinking he is going to die.
- Guy realizes after three weeks that he has his trail legs.
- Guy eats 10,000 calories a day. Continues to drop weight. Continues to build muscle and endurance.
- Guy cuts way back on the amount of gear he is carrying.
- Guy finishes the trail in the winter despite the last sections being closed due to snow/ice danger.
- Guy is hella fit.

That is awesome man! I'm sure I'll run into many Boy Scouts from what I hear from numerous thru hikers.

Thanks! LOL that was funny to read. I didn't get a chance to read half the books I wanted to, but did finish the most well known books.

No problem. I actually still have that one on a bookshelf. I was planning to offer it to a co-worker who is thru-hiking this year, but if he doesn't want it I'll be glad to send it to you if you pay the shipping. Media mail shipping should only be a buck or two.

Yeah man let me know. When I come through Hot Springs I'll be coming back to my house for a night so if I check the board then and you haven't sent it off, I'll definitely add it to my collection of AT books!

Thanks again!

Hey guys. This is the last time I'll be on the forum for a while. I leave tomorrow morning to head to Springer, and will set out to begin my thru hike Saturday morning. Thanks for all the support in this thread and also a big thanks to those of you who will be following my via my journal.

That's still good, you did more than most folks could dream of doing.

I did Hughes Gap to 19 E this weekend, over Roan Mtn area. Met a touron with his family at the Carver's Gap parking area. He was reading the info sign about the balds, and asked how far it was to Grassy Ridge Bald. I told him about two miles. He asked where the road was. I told him it was walking. He didn't believe me...even after seeing our packs, he couldn't believe anyone could walk up there. As he walked away, he was telling his wife they'd just drive down the highway mile or two, there had to be a road someplace.

My brother made this slide show of my 815 mile hike along the AT from Springer Mtn to The Dutch Haus earlier this year. Many of you on this forum followed me an I thank you for doing so. The support was great to have! He can mail anyone a hard copy DVD of this slide show. If you would like one, just send me a PM. Thanks again for all the support and enjoy the slide show!
