Any trappers on here?

I spent a few years trapping in Minnesota as a kid.

Of course it's a damn trappers paradise up there, weasel, muskrat, otter, beaver etc.

always used snares , checked them after school every day.

So, is there a market for fur/pelts? I had thrown around the idea of learning to trap once we got moved/settled.. I know it was a lucrative business waaaaaaaaay back in the day.. It never got past the fleeting thought process..

Fur is still being bought. Prices change yearly since all pelts are sold wholesale once a year. This year southern fur isn't gonna sell for much been to warm fur hasnt gotten dense liek northener fur more so this year than in the past couple. In all honesty between the time spent checking traps skinning fleshing and stretching and cost of tags. It's not really worth it unless you live on several hundred acres of productive trap lines and have nothing else to do. I still trap several places but it's more for trying to help the grouse and turkey chicks then anything else.

Kenneth said the ChiComs and North Koreans still use fur for articles of their military's uniforms. He does traping for pest removal and the pelts are to the side. I really don't see it being lucrative at all.

I figured it wasn't a sound business idea... I hunt, so trapping was the next step in my thought process. It may be something I look into learning how to do later on, but it would probably be for pest control, with a possibility of simply learning the tanning process. Thanks for the info guys!

Well, I bought a few more years traps Friday. Set them yesterday, so now I have a total of 4. Wish I had a dozen more. Went this am and checked them. Got my first catch. Awesome! Can't wait to catch more.

that's pretty good. hahahahaha. actually caught it were I busted the dam. set body trap in there. the beavers actually started building the dam back and covered the otter up with sticks and mud. went today and the 2 traps I have set near the dam were set off. they were filled with filth from all this rain pushing stuff thru. pond was actually about a foot higher than yesterday morning. I reset them and hopefully it won't happen again.

well I caught a beaver last Wednesday and a otter yesterday. hoping there are not any more otters, but think there are. they have been wearing the fish out. beavers I believe have me figured out. shot at 1 Saturday morning, but think I missed. this has definitely been fun. jesse
