Looking at options for a 2 week New England vacation next year and thinking about renting an RV. Planning on driving from WNC to New England and move around to see all the tourist shit to shut my wife up. Anyone ever rented an RV?

Had friends who did, they enjoyed the experience. Went out west for several weeks. Got very lucky when promised unit wasn't ready and got a free upgrade from a class c to larger class a.

My dad did the math on it for a trip from WV to TX and back. He is a retired engineer and I promise you he can show you how much money he has in fuel for every vehicle he's had since the 70's.
Anyway he decided to buy a nice used one and he could sell it when he got back for a loss and still come out ahead. Turns out he loved it and kept it 12 years before buying a new one.

I've got some friends that have had great rental experiences.

Someplace national like cruiseamerica is good if you have problems on the trip, but you look like a rolling billboard for them. Local rental business might be cheaper, and look "normal". We have a place here in town that rents, has a good rep. RV Rental of Sanford | RV Rental | Motorhome Rentals

At a couple hundred bucks a day, you might do good to do what GW said, and buy used, then sell....more likely to work out if you have a tow vehicle and get a travel trailer.

My wife wants to do the same thing and drive to Niagara Falls. Subbed.

Edit: $180/day + $0.70/mile over 200 per day .

Unless you're just dead set on the RV experience........

For that price, I'd take a car/SUV and stay in hotels instead of taking a RV.

I agree.

NE and back.....from Candler, and "see all the tourist shit to shut my wife up" could be up to 2700 miles Hell fuel alone will be +/-$800 for the trip. Round trip from Asheville to Hartford is only $448 (orbitz march 2017 mid-week)

Rent a car, stay in decent hotels, and go where you want (not limited by logistics of an RV) and fly home. Might even cost less.

Then again, the experience of driving a MUCH bigger vehicle than your standard SUV while your wife backseat drives for 1000 miles one way DOES sound much more appealing

Or you could use the Jeepinmatt approach. Thats where you buy one at a good price, do what you need with it, then sell it for more than you paid for it.

I seen it!

Even counting taxes, tags and all that you still come out ahead?
Well, never tried it on a motorhome, but its worked on just about everything else I've bought in the past few years. The key is to make your money when you buy it, and not be in a dire hurry to sell it.

Thanks for all the input. I don't want to go the RV route but if it shuts her up I'd pay double. I have enough airline miles, rental car rewards, and hotel points to cover the trip but that's not what she wants to do. Knowing her she will want to rent a damn Prevost motor coach.

I feel you bother! "Heated marble floors"

Yes...that's the requirement my queen would require to get her into "An ARRRRVEEE"

My wife is certainly no Cydney

Three or four summers ago we went cross country pullin a 32 foot camper, went all the way to Long beach.Unless we were somewhere we wanted to spend a few days at we spent every other night sleepin at the truck stops.Camping spots were about $50 a night and we were gone 29 days.I don't remember exactly how much we spend on camping spots but we spent $2100 on fuel.Unless your after the "experience" fly then get a rental.

Remember if you buy an RV, it's tax deductible because it's a 2nd home.

Bri and I have been looking for one just for this reason.

I did numbers and have rented one. If you have to rent longer than a couple weeks and plan to drive it everywhere, it's better to buy and the sell after.

However, you have to be wise with the purchase so you don't have to hold on into it for 2 years because you bought it at an inflated price.

Could/would this also apply to road tractors that are converted to rv's?

Before y'all get too excited, it's just the interest that's deductible. Helps a little, but you are still in the hole.
What about closing costs?
Can you get PMI on an RV loan? o_O
Maybe you can make some mods and claim some home energy credits?

There is a rented rv next to my site in Wilmington. Cruiseamerica.com
