Ive been talking to a recruiter at school now and im planning on joining asap i think that this will be a great opportunity for me since im still young and you get full benefits. Im planning on going for Military police or airborne but im still undecided yet.
any of you army folks have any tips for me??

If you go MP, go in late spring. Ft Leonard Wood Missouri (where they train MP's) gets really cold in the winter. They do OSUT (one station unit training) which combines basic and AIT. My step-son just graduated there as an MP this past January.

You can go Airborne and be an MP.Do you mean Airborne as in Airborne Infantry?I did that for 3 years. It can be tough, but you make some good friends and good memories.

You have stated that you want to go MP or Airborne.

First of all you need to figure out what you want to do as a job in the military. MP is an Army Job but Airborne is a skill identifier. You can be MP and be Airborne or you could be an MP and not be Airborne. It really all depends on which unit you are assigned to and what you have in your contract.

My suggestion is that you sign up for an MOS (military occupational specialty) that transfers to the civilian side the best. This could be difficult since most MOSs do not transfer to the civilian side.

Example: an Army mechanic will receive MOS training but on the civilian side that training doesn't mean anything because it all has to be ASE certified. So while you may get the experience you will not be able to go to a repair shop and get that mechanic job that is available; unless, of course, you do the ASE stuff on your own.

MP is the same way. If you want to be an MP because you think it will help you get on the police force when you get out that isn't necessarily the case.

I don't want to discourage you from going into the Army but just make sure you choose your MOS wisely. There are some cases in which the Army will pay you to attend a civilian college in order to obtain a education for a particular MOS. Have an idea of what you want to do before you talk to the recruiter because he is going to give you options for the positions that he needs to fill. He is basically a used car salesman (no offense to anyone) but he is going to push you in the direction that he needs you to go, not necessarily what is in your best interest. Also, if he tells you to sign up for a particular MOS and says you can change it later do not do it. Changing an MOS is difficult if not nearly impossible once you're in.

When you do go in make sure you sign up for the GI bill and take college courses when you are in the Army (if you are active duty your college will not come out of your GI bill - they give you so many FREE).

Sorry so long. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks a lot for your help i was thinking of going mp airborne since i have wanted to be part of the police force and jump out of planes but say i sign up for 4 years i want to know how i could get into ICE or homeland secuirity with that in my background...
Any advice is appreciated... Thank All of you for your service

National Guard! Ive been in the guard for 7 years. Choose MP as your MOS. Go to Basic and AIT. Take advantage of GI Bill and go to BLET. Become a Police Officer at your hometown or go Active. If you want to talk more about it call me 704 473 2561. Ill give you all the information you want with no recruiter BS.

i was in f l w last winter it was cold my mos was mp 31b, only thing good about going in the winter time is that you get to have x mas break.

32 will limit your choices. What was your GT score? That's what they look at for a lot of MOSs.Study up and take it again if you want to get into a more technical field.

A family friend served with the 82nd air born. Tours in Iraq the first time around and Afghanistan. He has some great stories including how his legs were permanently disfigured in a night jump. Not disabled. Just big knots of bone make it look like he has two knee caps.
My niece is with her husband who is serving in Korea right now. Made E-7 in less than 10 years.
What ever you chose, thank you for your coming service.

The GT Score is the sum of Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension (VE) and Arithmetic Reasoning (AR).

My son scored a 115 GT, pretty much qualified for every job the army had. He did lousy in high school. He's going to boot in Nov. Keep trying, we're behind you.
And thanks for volunteering.

ok I have no idea what my GT score is ill try and find out on monday.. what is your son going into the army like jobwise?? Tell him I said Thank You

If they give you a computer print out with your ASVAB score it will have th GT score and others on it.Ask your recruiter. As stated GT score is GT — General Technical — VE+AR

Airborne Infantryman here, stationed at Bragg. I would recommend going Airborne, but unless you want your body to constantly hurt, be tired, and put yourself through a lot of unnecessary BS I'd steer clear of the Infantry world. don't get me wrong, I've had a lot of fun and have gotten to see and do a lot of cool things (PM me for details if interested, because I doubt everybody here wants to hear war stories), but we do some stupid stuff sometimes too. lol. I've been in coming up on 3 years now and have 3 years active left...and I wouldn't change it for a minute or take any of it back.

*edit* back when I joined my GT score was 115. all you need is a 110 to qualify you for pretty much any job the Army has available. if it isn't 110 or higher, the Army has a school that you can go to to bring that score up. good luck and if you have any questions feel free to ask!
