Going to be needing all new appliances soon, which brands are good, which brands are shit? Budget isn't high roller but willing to spend a little coin for some decent products. Any must have features? Propane v electric range/oven? Wife is kinda leaning towards a stacker washer dryer combo, but I remember front load washers being finicky when they first came out, is that still a thing?

It's all shit unless you spend a lot of $$.
Then its high priced shit.

Seriously, everybody I know has had better longevity and the same level of clean and dry with 20 year old used maytags that can actually be serviced than anything else.

When I bought the house…5 years ago…Samsung fridge (about once a year have to put a new tstat and coil in to de-ice)…chews up the fan so I have replace that about every 2 years. I really like the Bosch dishwasher, super quiet. Whirlpool microwave, nice and big and cooks quickly. GE stove/range does as it should…light bulb goes out frequently though, temps don’t seem to fluctuate as much as others I’ve seen. Washer and dryer, I had been carrying around a 30yr old set because they wash and dry as they should and I’ve never had a new set last more than just outside warranty. Bought a new GE washer/dryer a couple years back, sold the 30yr old set…transmission on the new washer went out right outside of warranty. So About a year ago bought Speed Queen, and apparently they’ve shifted to a 5yr warranty instead of lifetime (at least on what I bought)…so we’ll see.

Speed Queen FTW on w/d. No question, no regrets.

I went all GE on our kitchen (4 years come June). Got online, looked at 1) parts prices and availability 2) availability of troubleshooting and repair information (youtube, etc) and 3) ease of (self) repair. GE won hands-down.

We kind of hit mid-range on the appliance. Not bottom of the barrel, not fancy, either. I think our complete kitchen package (fridge, stove, dishwaser, microwave was around 4500-ish.

One thing we've enjoyed and really used with the GE fridge is the built-in Keurig machine. Only added about 100 bucks, and you don't have to worry with filling a reservoir, and one less thing on the kitchen counter.

We went with everything GE in the kitchen and Maytag for the washer and dryer. So far no problems with anything. Been in our house almost 3 yrs now. We went with a gas stove/oven. My wife cooks a lot and hates how slow to heat glass tops are. I liked propane because when we have the next bad ice storm we will be able to cook indoors.

All ours came from Garner TV and appliance. No complaints with them other than that their delivery guys scratched my brand new cabinets putting in the fridge. Not the end of the world though. My kids have done much worse since then.

I have a buddy that his family owns a fairly large appliance repair company.

His words, stick with Whirlpool, GE, Kitchenaid( for high dollar), Speed queen. Stay away from Samsung, Bosch, and LG.

Speed queen does make some of the best washer and dryers. You can get a washer that still uses water. Just got one myself.

Edit: the more frills, the more to go wrong.

My entire kitchen is whirlpool Gold series and have been in the house since we moved in about 4 years ago and they have given no issues (knock on wood). W&D set I bought used back in 2013 and were Whirlpool Duet. They moved into storage and back, then to Louisiana them back to NC. Between household and farm clothes and dog beds and all sorts of stuff we run the hell out of them with super heavy grunge levels and the washer just gave up the ghost as it lost a bearing and it wrecked the drum. We went to Lowes and got a last years model whirlpool (basically a newer model of the duet). It was on sale (40%). Used the saved $$ to buy a 3yr warranty. So far it has been great and it’s nice cause it’s a bigger drum at 5.5 cu. ft. As opposed to the 4.5 of the old washer.

I think I've bought four Bosch 800 series dishwashers for various uses, including two that are in an office and run constantly. Never a problem with any of them.

Go GE or Whirlpool (or any of their various sub-brands) for the rest. Stay away from LG and Samsung.

If you can find an old washer/dryer (~20 yrs), go with those. They might need a belt replacement or something now and again, but they'll always clean your clothes and will generally be dependable.

Another ‘tip’…if/when buying new, I went through Lowes…it was around July 4th, so they had sales…like 10-20% off. I elected to get their credit card at the check out…another 10-15% off…because I was ‘a new sign up’. Went home…cancelled the card. Can’t remember if I had to put the purchase on the card or not, if I did, I paid off the card then cancelled…haha. And was out of the card within a day. Not sure if you can still get away with that or not though. All said and done, knocked about $3k off the bill with the sale and card.

My advice is buy it now. Our high dollar dishwasher went out the other day and like a lemming I went back to the appliance store where it was purchased to get another. The salesman said he'd be glad to order one and it should be here within 6 months! We called Slowes and they actually had one and only one. It's a mid priced Whirlpool and it blows our expensive one out of the water.

I'll third or fourth on avoiding Samsung fridge. We bought a 4 door flex zone Samsung solely so our daughter had a little door she could get in for yogurt, cheese sticks, etc. (We had seperate side by side fridge and freezer units before and she could get her own snacks). We've had a lot of issues with it and now out of warranty.

We've had good luck with LG washer and drier. 14 years and I've only replaced the drain pump on the washer.

Antitrust laws is what forces these companies to partake in other industries. My maxim is simple. If the manufacturer is a super awesome screen/tv manufacturer, it means they will prob have a top notch working button/display on a fridge. Doesnt mean the rest of that fridge is good. If I want a tv, Samsung. If I want a dishwasher, Speed Queen (Since 1908).

We have all LG appliances, well Fridge and dishwasher as well as TV and LG is all we will buy, when we upgrade our washer/Dryer as well as oven. Plus, there is an App where you can link all of your appliances and it will let you know when you need to change filter, or add dish dry, things like that.

Thanks for the replies. I've heard the same thing about Samsung that y'all are echoing here, and I share the general opinion that less doohickeys are better and just because a company makes good TVs doesn't mean they make good appliances. We are definitely going to be shopping the holiday sales and I'm not scared of a scratch 'n dent unit either lol.

I have all samsung stuff (it was in the house when I got it)

Fridge likes to freeze up the water line running to the ice machine every so often
The microwave buttons have this "cover" on the button that wears off

The dishwasher and oven though no issues with

Our washer and dryer are at least 20 years old and work like new, bought them used when we moved. GE washer and Whirlpool dryer.

Refrigerator is the 1991 GE from when the place was put here. Stove too.

Craigslist used is the way, a cheap new washer is $500.

All our appliances were 30+ years old. We have started replacing one by one with Kitchenaid. So far we have a dishwasher(bought at Lowes) and a refrigerator(bought at dent/ding appliance store, like new with warranty, saved 1k). So far they have been outstanding with no issues. I'd stay away from Samsung, Bosch, LG.

Garner TV was cheaper than Lowes even with Lowes holiday discounts.

If you wait and hit the “new model changeover” at the blowes despot you can usually get some smokin discounts!! That’s how I bought our spare/ garage fridge and it was $1,800 but paid $750 after the discount and free delivery. Still going beast after being moved with us from Louisianan to NC and living in garage conditions since we bought it (2016)

Our washer and dryer, some basic GE models, came with the house. I'm guessing they are from the 90s? In the 12 years I've had them I have replaced the dryer belt once and a t-stat or something. Probably an hour and half work between the two. Washer I had to replace the tub bearings once. That was a pain in the butt, and had to buy a weird tool, but it only cost $100 total.
Are they energy or water efficient? No. Do I care? No. Are my clothes just and clean and dry as everybody else's? Yes.

Similarly, stove came with the house, just your generic metal eye ugly black and crème thing from the 80s. It's job is to heat up and bake stuff. It does that. It's ugly, but so am I and the rest of the kitchen.

Samsung washer and dryer - 13-14 yrs old and still working, no problems. Were fairly top of the line when purchased.

Maytag refrigerator - 13-14 yrs old and still working, no problems.

Dishwasher - Bosch

Like any BLM protest, it works better with a white agitator. Don't go for the new crap....we tried a Samsung at mom's 5 years ago, it had the water auto-level no agitator...clothes (small load) would wash for a half hour and the stuff on top wouldn't even be wet.
