The boy turns 21 sunday. He's at Western Carolina and works till 10 that night. I want to book a hotel in Asheville then run over and get him from school to go have his first (legal) beer.

Any suggestions?

@Loganwayne anything that maybe closer to Western that would be as cool?

The casino is probably going to be the nicest about 20 miles away or the Quality Inn or Holiday Inn that’s in Sylva that’s just a couple miles away.

I was thinking booking something downtown asheville that we could walk to a good bar/brewery to and from

$300?

I'm not finding ANY bars open past 11 on sunday night in Asheville though. Hell, O'malley's in Sylva is actually open till 2am. o_O

Kinda wanted to take him to Asheville and enjoy some nightlife but it seems they roll the streets up on sunday night there. (cept for the gay bars....err.."gay friendly" according to trip advisor

Spent many a night enjoying O’malleys at its finest when the wife went to western. There’s a Best Western on the river in Dillsboro that’s pretty nice and a nice patio area that is good for drinking while listening to the river. Otherwise, the wife has got us in to the Grove Park a few times for under $200 using Priceline. Not a $3000 suite or anything, but a decent room.

Sunday night everything shuts down early. And I wouldn’t go drinking in Asheville there is way to many weird ass people in down town now.

That said the area around the orange peel has bar taco and a couple other good places to eat and a couple breweries without to much weirdness.

Why not look into an AirBnB? Likely many options and often same or cheaper than hotel rates.

Also... I find it interesting your son would want to go out drinking w his old man.
Although I had a great relationship w my parents, that was kind of a thing for me, my buddies and my gf. No way I'd have wanted my dad around.

I think it’s awesome Troy’s son wanting to go out with him. My dad was cool as hell and I drank a few with him when I hit 21.

Honestly? Never done it...and not all that excited about staying in someone else's house.
Done a shitton of hotels though

He was actually coming HOME to have a beer with me, forsaking his roommates and college buds FOR "a beer with dad"
But 2 people were fired and he was forced to work his birthday. So....time for me to go to HIM

I'm honored but not surprised. We have that kind of relationship

Not sure what you're getting at here.
I've done it several times and it's often somebody's extra property that would be a rental, but they rent it by the night, instead of a year lease. Comes fully stocked with everything you need. I mean, there are some that are attached to a house or part of a sub-section but those are easy to weed out.
And generally there's less personal interaction required (no front desk) than a hotel and you get more space.
Worth looking into IMO

Asheville law says for a short term rental the owner of the house must live in the house that is being rented.

I've thrown big blow out bashes for my siblings and wife's siblings just so they'd stay in and not go out. Controlled environment. I play bar tender, top shelf booze all the way, get them sicker than hell so they never wanna touch anything alcoholic again. It's worked decently well so far.

nothing useful to add but had many a great night with my pops at his favorite watering hole. actually ran into him on accident the first time and lo and behold there is the old man in the corner sipping a beer and playing space invaders. best of times.

I liked the quality inn that we stayed at in asheville. Close to the VA Hospital (why we were there). It was clean and simple. No frills. And comparatively cheap.

@CasterTroy whenever you're ready for the non-Asheville, good local brewery experience, holla atcha boy Jody.
We live very close to Brevard, read Oskar Blues, Brevard Brewing among other super chill, small batch ones. I'll show you around.
Ask @shawn, @trailhugger and @tlucier why they avoid AVL and enjoy brews in my neck of the woods.
