ATLAS...Where to buy

Advanced Adapters gave me a hell of a deal on one.

However, I'd support the local guys first if the price was comparable but tax usually seems to be a big kicker as tax on $2000 can be quite a bit of $$$

true. some vendors will get bent at people when they don't shop them but when tax adds hundreds on a major jeep purchase... retailers have to figure the cost of giving someone local a good deal and gaining repeat business by eating a little money up front vs running that person off with a high price to a big box retailer.

works great until you have a problem then you pay shipping to return an or replacement....assuming its under warranty.

There is up front price and then there is cost.
id buy from Alex, price may be higher cost wont be.

I called everyone that was referred to me when I bought mine. Everyone was about the same price range, but I ended up ordering from Advance Adapters simply because of price. They didn't charge me sales tax and that made all the difference. Well over A $100bucks. Not what I wanted to do, but I had to watch the budget. I did try to give the local guys a chance.

An Altas really isn't a huge money maker. If you want to give a local guy a chance Ill sell it to you at cost plus sales tax. If you can write a check vs a credit card that would also save a little bit.

I bought mine from High Angle Driveline because I was buying driveshaft parts at the same time to upgrade my front driveshaft.

somebody is going to have to pay to ship it back to AA. I wouldn't expect Alex (or anyone else) to fork up the $$$ to ship it back. They do have a lifetime waranty to the original purchaser. I'd figure $150 for shipping someting that is 100% covered is worth it. I'd assume I would have to pay for the shipping if I bought from Alex or AA. Alex may be able to elaborate on who covers shipping if purchased from him over AA.

Well I would think a dealer would have more leverage based on volume than an individual, but I may be wrong.

If Alex (or AA) would cover the shipping on all accounts for the warranty, I'd def. buy local even with the tax or a little higher price

Anyone running the atlas 4speed with an auto> im going to be running an AW4 which has a 2.80 first gear, 5.13 diffs with 39s...and later 42s. I am a little dissapointed with the gear choices of each case. the 5.44 case has 1.1, 2.0, 2.72, and 5.44..doesnt seem like the 2.0 and the 2.72 would be much difference in crawl ratio...29.1 and 39.1 with my setup. With the 5.44, my final ratio would be 78.1 and that should be fine for an auto. But it makes the other two gear choices seem useless. On the other hand, the 10.3 case has better ratios but the 10.3 is worthless with an auto and Im affraid the 3.8 will not be enough. Im starting to think I should just say to hell with it and run a 4.1 d300...Any input?

You can ask any of my customers, I'm extremely reasonable and I always make sure my guys are taken care of. I'll have to talk to AA but personally I have never had any problems out of an Atlas yet.
There is a break in period also, if you go buy their recommendations you should be okay. Let me know if you have any specific questions let me know.....btw I personally wouldn't put a 4sp behind a slush box, or i would have put one in the JK.

I think I am starting to agree. Its not so much the cost as it is getting the gearing right...what gearing would you recommend?

3.8 or 4.3

Chad and I have been rolling this over and over....I'm worried that with the added weight of the tons and the dia. of 39/42's he won't be able to generate much wheel speed w/ just a 4:1 and it wont be slow enough to just get down and crawl. I think a 4:1 D300 would be the way to go if he is going to stay in that range, when you weigh out costs. Especially behind the AW4. I would say the ideal reduction ranges would be 1:1, (around) 3.5:1, and 5.5-6:1...only problem is that only points to the stak, best we can figure...What about a klune-v/np205? kinda old school, but...
