ATTN: people who run winches on their rigs

yeah...defend him and all or defend yourselves for doing or thinking of doing the same thing, but the bottom line is that it is completely unsafe to have that on there like that, its not even mounted in a place that would be suitable for pulling it onto a trailer...lets face it, he got the winch to look cool. comealongs are what should be used for yard work and small jobs...theyre more versitle and work just as well for a whole lot less money. the only place that winch should be mounted is maybe on a four wheeler or on a trailer where it can be secured to a vehicle using axel straps or tow hooks, not the middle of a bumper that will probably bend outward the first time any weight is pulled on it.

it would be better to have no winch than something that could break and injure or kill someone because of irresponsibility. a snapping cable under load can go right through a person, and if someone is dumb enough to put that on a vehicle, then they probably don't know how to safely use it even if it was used for the purpose intended, much less what they are attempting

I have to go with Bill and Yager on this one. I got pulled out of a bad spot at UNF one night in my wifes XJ by a 2200 ld four wheeler winch.

Sam(slim)

I'd guess ANY winch is better than NO winch (which is what I have right now...), but that thing looks more like a deep-sea fishing reel.

So along the same lines, if I were to get stuck and could only afford a 40 ft 200lb rated chain instead of a tow strap...it would be cool to use, just because. Right?

Not really.
Because you can, using vehicle power, far exceed the capacity of that chain and get someone hurt.

OTOH - to use another example. If all you can afford is a come-a-long - it is better than nothing and MIGHT get you out. I'd use the come-a-long.

Any recovery tool can get you hurt if abused.

For grins - consider this. I have a hand crank boat winch on the 1/2 ton crane on the back of my utility body truck.
If someone were to look at that and think I am using it for recovery or towing, they would be correct in saying it is a very poor choice on a 7k # truck. But, if they realize it is for lifting engines, axles, bits of farm equipment, or my Bobcat welder in and out of the truck it is using the tool as it is intended.

Who's the fool then. Me or the person Ass-U-Me-ing something.

;)

;) I think he was using sarcasm.
I'd say go with a highlift and a large chain for last resort if you don't have a winch and you can't get out with a tow strap. (Disclaimer: under no circumstances should a vehicle be ganked with a chain, just used for a dead pull) A come-along would also work but I would get a heavy duty model. (not the lawnmower edition)

I pretty much realized that. I mean really who would use 40 feet of chain.

Besides 200 lb chain would be about like the stuff they use to hold the chalk on pool tables.

But I was serious about NOT using it.

To me there is some confusion about using chain.

You are 100% correct -
You do NOT want to use chain to snatch someone. Injury will be VERY likely and damage is almost certain.

But using it as an anchor point or in conjunction with a highlift as a puller or a come-a-long it is highly unlikely you will break it.

One major downfall of chain vs strap. Strap will give and usually offer some warning before it breaks. Chain will break all at once with little or no warning.

Overall, chain is more likely to be dangerous and get someone in trouble than strap, by a wide margain.
So it is just better to not use it.

Tangent - Straps with abraisions, cuts, distortions, or which have been over stressed should be disgarded also.
But how many of us won't throw away that $30-50 strap "just because it has a few nicks in it"??

Oh, yeah - sorry for the thread hijack.

why do people defend this lunicy? you dont put a 1200lb winch on a jeep. u just dont do it. i dont care what u pull and what not. there are certian things yo dont do.
1- tell the preacher to go screw himself

it could be that this particular jeep owner just has a strange sense of humor? i once ran a set of cattle longhorns on the front of my 85 diesel powered jetta. hey, i wonder if anyone ever made fun of it on a VW forum? haha

Exactly. He probably did it as a joke. Just like the guy who puts a riced-out Dunk muffler on the back of his Slorolla thinking his buddies will get a kick out of it. Only problem is, nobody else realizes it's a joke!

Now the fact that he dumped the money on a Warn instead of the $50 HF special, that kinda scares me. However, it is a TJ, and his mom probably bought it so he'd love her.

Any tugging, winching, or yanking, is extremely dangerous.
and how you use what you got is important.
I've winched myself out of a lot of problems with a little cheap come along

that winch is dangerous positioned the way it is. It will at the least damage the front bumper. if not rip loose and hurt somebody.

but you know sometimes you use what you got and deal with the laughs. or until someone give an informative conversation explaining your stupidity to you in a way that make you understand why your an idiot

kind of like driving a toy at a jeep rally or vise versa

from the looks of the rigs it has never seen anything major and probably never will. that winch would come in handy in a snow storm for a little more when you have limited traction. or when your wheel is spinning when your pulling out the boat.

Thats exactly what I was thinking. I used to have a little ranger that I had to come-a-long out of the boat slip every time and I always wished I had a little winch. Granted, that particular mounting position does lead a lot to be desired but seriasly..havent we got anything better to do than criticize somebody over a situation we know absolutly nothing about?
