Automatic or Manual

took my new tj wheelin a little today its a auto i loved it my old tj was 5 speed, u have to use the brakes more comin off hills but its worth it.

Manual, 'cause I'm a dude. :)

The wife's car is one of those auto-stick jobs. I don't have to scream at it as much as most slush box tranny's, but it still about as useful as a cock-flavored lollypop.

Three pedals and two feet? It's not that hard. Especially when your used to heel-toe shifting. Just wish my pedals were mounted to floor instead of the firewall....

auto with a full manual valve body and an electrically held lock up solenoid.

Works for me

What he said. That set up will flat out kick a manual's ass in just about every form of racing.
The "manly" factor is a pretty ridiculous debate. A stock carbureted 454 is "manlier" and more old school than an ls1...but that certainly doesn't make it better.

Besides, with the proper cooling, valvebody and fluid pick-up...you will have pulled a manual trans twice to replace the clutch or flywheel before even touching the auto. The super testosterone filled truck nuts guys can forget about using the clutch in the mud as well.

Just saying. :flipoff2:

Just saying. :flipoff2:

I love manual trannies in fast cars and in trucks that get driven on the road... Downhill in snow, a low-geared manual setup can be a lifesaver.

But offroad, I'm all about some auto action. And for the manly/capability debate, most of the heavy equipment that goes places trucks can't (and would drive straight through a lot of the buggies on here) have a simple groundspeed control and clutchless gear shifting, if they're even equipped with gears...

All that said, I've been known to go for the clutch with my left foot in my jeep and find only the brake...Its embarrassing to say the least.

I prefer the A/T. Seems to be more forgiving on driveline parts due to the converter. The hold back on down hills isn't as good and the M/T but i've not had that much of an issue.

manual

in a rookies opinion...
manual...i had an auto in my CJ and hated it...in process of putting in NV 4500.
if your rebuilding/swapping, do some research and find out which mods to do to a auto. (if any)..

my auto ran like crap (probably wasn't set up correctly)..so it hunted, trying to find the correct gear to go in..never felt like i had good control of jeep...

coke......

Bicycle gear shift lever strapped to the shofter. Cable to the throttle body. Gives you a thumb throttle control if you want to use the feet for clutch and break while wheeling.
I haven't done it yet. A friend did though and it w a very cool set up.
I like the manual even more for slow down hill. Engine braking instead of pedal.

And again I can do the same thing with my auto...

To be fair, I love the 4500 in our GMC ton truck. I don't think I'd go far out of my way to stick one in a jeep tho, especially a short jeep.

Cuts a great balance between grannyish first and still being able to run highway speeds on 285s and of course its nice to know the beef will put up with the 454...

But if I was running big tires and didn't need a tall 5th gear for the highway...

I still think that a well setup auto is the superior performance choice for off road. Maybe less "challenging" but then I prefer the challenge to come from the terrain, not from making my vehicle harder to drive in zany positions.
