Barrel rolled the ZJ at URE today

General rule of thumb we teach in the offroad driving school is, if you will not lay down and let your buddy drop it on your face, it needs to be secured with a ratchet strap. Imagine a tool box or spare tire flying up into the passenger area in a roll like that. Even a simple 1/2 drive ratchet could severely injure you. Hopefully we can all learn from events like this..

Back when I had my wagoneer (FSJ), I went off the road up in the mountains. Went nose-down, ended up standing almost vertical down in a drainage. As it came to an abrupt stop at the bottom, all the crap from in back was raining down on the windshield and dash. Suitcase, toolbox, spare parts, etc...everything...lucky I wasn't hurt in the crash, and lucky I didn't get beaned in the back of the head. BTW, got it towed back to the top of the hill and drove it home.

Hey Clay, I was the one who helped get it jacked up so you could change the tire . We were all glad you guys were ok. Glad you had the exo or it would have been alot worse.

Big Clay, I'll say again I'm glad you and your spotter are OK! But this brings me to a point I must bring into the spotlight about your bad luck. I have surmised that on the day of the roll it was in the afternoon. And being after 12:00 or later taking the barometric pressure into account for the humidity and temperature coinciding with the month of September and the surface of the terrain in which the accident occurred there is only one answer to why it happened! You and your rig was off balance! The only thing that could have been different was to stop at the Double Parking lot and consume 1 BBQ sandwich or 2.3 Hot Dogs! This would have you perfectly stable!

Sorry Clay.....just had to.

Thanks for your help man, my adrenaline was still pumping so hard I could barely get the jack set up.

So I knew it was your fault Terry ;)

haha, The Hot Dog Guy solves all problems.

I rolled a WJ when i was sixteen. Granted, I wasn't offroad, but I remember watching in the rearview the box with 2 12" subs hitting the ceiling. I couldn't imagine getting hit in the back of the head with that.

Glad your ok man. I was in the group on the ledge that you passed on your way down. We were on our way up there from the ledge when the CJ-10 buggy had some engine problems and we had to wait there for a bit; otherwise we may have been in your way at the bottom when you came rolling down.

Echoing everyone else: Glad you guys re OK Clay!

But this thread has certainly enlightened me a great deal! Lot of stuff to learn...lot of respect for M&M

Thanks for letting me go through, I was still pretty shook up and just wanted to get back to the trailer and get home. I am so glad you guys weren't at the bottom, it still scares me to think what would have happened if there was someone on the trail below me with 6,000 pounds of out of control metal rolling toward them.
