Me and couple guys were up there this past Tuesday, My buddy parked his dakota after taking it on some easy trails and rode with me the rest of the day, he parked at the parking area on 553 near the Dutch John trailhead. There was one other truck parked there with a 4 wheeler trailer hooked up. A few hours later we returned to find that some one had cut the catalytic converters off both trucks. I had heard this has been happening a lot but had not seen it first hand till now. When we were dropping his truck off there, we saw a black early 90's model buick with two guys in there, they were looking hard and just looked a little out of place. Anyway just keep this in mind if your up there during the week and theres not a lot of people up there and your leaving a vehicle parked near by.

DANG!

I just posted last week that someone at work had left their car overnight and had their converter jacked!

This has got to be stopped. Any ideas? Encase them with a large skid? (protection from theives, not rocks)

If I lived closer I would set up a decoy vehicle and set up in the woods with a camera and catch these guys. They will do it again.

Glad my truck doesnt have an exhaust, let alone a Cat to steal. :shaking:

Seems to be a problem that's getting worse. Anything worth a nickle or two, is getting stolen. I might just invest in one of those motion detecting cameras, like you set up for wildlife, to take with me. They might get the stuff, but more possibilities catching them.

What really sucks is that I think we were on Rocky Mtn loop which crosses the road up above the parking area, well my buddy in the back said, "hey there are a couple of people over there near the trucks" I thought it was the other people who were parked there and just joking said "the werent messing with your truck were they!!" Hind site is 20/20 but I still wish I would have turned around and went back, I would have loved to catch them fools in the act.

Is Wayne Brady gonna hafta choke a bitch?
No reason you can't make the cat "hot" (Read: 120 volts or more).

What might be even cooler is to have an airbag suspension that instantly deflated to ground level if the cat was removed...

What are they doing with the cats:confused:

Well there is the issue of where to get 120 at in a parking lot, but other than that...

Cats contain trace amounts of precious metals (platinum) and bring a pretty penny these days.

Its really odd. The k5 I just stripped I sold the cats (4 of them) for $210. They cost $45 each at advance...

I had no idea that they were so pricey now.

Volts don't kill people, amps do. :flipoff2:
Im aware, but hey, we are BS'ing on the internet about stopping people from stealing cats. Assuming an Optima Redtop HD, youve got about 1000amps@12vdc, thats 12000 watts. Make it 600volts, youve got 20amps. Anyway, I still think its a neat idea.

I went to Charlotte last weekend. I saw a van on the side of the road, for sale, with the exhaust hanging down and the cat removed. On the way home, a late-model pickup came blowing past us making a helluva racket! Yep, open headers. The rest of the exhaust was dangling down. This is really getting ridiculous.

Where did you sell your cats off at? I need to get rid of the old cat off of my XJ.

A friend owns a shop in Rock Hill.

He has these "scrap bums" that come by and buy them.

He is convinced these guys have found a way to make meth out of the cats,

Neighbor owns a Tire/repair shop up in Boonville, said it's getting REAL common. Apparently guys run around with Battery pack Sawzalls and cut them out. He has a Dealership up the road that he does all the work for and they are often bringing cars up for new Cats.

So lets say you come across somebody doing this to your car/truck/jeep. WITHIN THE LAW, what can you do? Obviously you can't shoot or stab them or use any kind of really effective method like that. Can you spray em with mace or hit em with a tazer? How much beatdown could you administer to them before you were the one with the criminal charges?
