Im using a lakewood bellhousing with the 5.3 and ax15 trans. Is this bh plate "needed"? I do need to purchase the boots for it. Thanks.

It appears the plate is "needed".

So after i drop the engine in, if the bh fits, i reckon ill order the plate unless anyone has good exp with running without one.

Dont all LS starters bolt up into the engine block like an old SBC?
The TC/Clutch point is valid.
The starter point a hard lesson I learned on a ford.

But I thought all Gms bolt into the block and have their depth set that way? Am I crazy?

I'm ASSuming the starter will bolt to the aftermarket bellhousing based on the pics in the first post. I'm not 100% based on the LS-AX15 swap however.

well thanks for the replies guys. looks like another 100 bones bites the dust. hey at least ill get the new hardware out of the purchase

Thats kind of the question I had.

I think you are going to have to cut that starter mount out of the way.
I dont think a GM starter will bolt in there, Im almost positive the block doesnt have the holes and that bellhousing doesnt look thick enough, even if threaded to support and prevent starter deflection.

That mount at the 7-8 o'clock position is the clutch slave mount. The starter location is at 4-5 o'clock just like any 4.0 would be.
I don't like the slave mount due to potential driveshaft interference.

Starter will bolt to block on passenger side, factory location for 5.3 and other sbcs. That bellhousing should bolt up to the 5.3 even though it has the old gen1/2 sbc pattern. You may lose a bolt and not sure if the bolts for the oil pan will line up with any of the ones in that BH flange but you can always drill it out. Not sure at all about that spacer plate, but it will have no effect on starter shimming. It may be necessary for pilot/clutch depth, would have to measure for that.

rock on i was looking bassackwards

been reading some more. does look like it is needed for proper starter alignment (at least on fords). either way apparently its primary purpose is to help keep crap out of the housing supposdely. So now gotta find one for a lakewood 15020 bh. woot!

thanks for the sounding boards and help!

It is needed for starter alignment on fords, because the starter bolts through the plate and BH. I assure you it is not needed for starter alignment on a 5.3.

Them GM applications with their "bolt straight to the block" Mr Fancypants stuff. Geez

In that regard. I cant see where it would effect to much the pilot input. there is room for it go deeper comparing to the muncie. so that extra 1/16th cant matter too much? Daredevil it and run without? lol

Someone say "i dare you" and ill do it lmao

I am pretty sure you don't need it. If you have the pilot depth I would run on without it, just make sure to measure for proper throwout alignment and action so you have proper clutch engagement/disengagement.

You could always make a thread to see if anyone else has firsthand experience with this EXACT combo of parts and disregard anyone elses opinion or advice if their experience is with something slightly different, but still relevant.

brilliant!

Just get a piece of 1/16" thick steel, drill/cut a hole for the crank, clamp between motor and trans and use a transfer punch to mark the holes and cut a starter hole. Shouldn't take but a hour at most.
