IMO JD's Smokehouse is #1. I've been searching for some good BBQ and they are it. I got the brisket and pulled pork combo. Servings are very generous and staff is very friendly. The brisket had that nice pink smoke ring and fell apart when trying to get a hold of it.:)

Anyone else like the place? They are in Rutherford college area and are only open thurs-sat.

JDs is one of the best ones in the Catawba Valley, but it's hit and miss. If you don't get there early it can be really dry, but good enough to take a risk.

I think Sweetfire in Lincolnton is good also. Hillbilly's in Lowell isn't bad.

my top 5
Skylight inn, Ayden nc
Mccalls , Goldsboro, nc
Creekers, Elizabethton, tn
Woodlands , blowing rock, nc
Sids, beulaville, nc

When I think of BBQ, I am thinking smoked pork ribs. The best ones that I have had in NC are from a place called Bandana's in Boone, NC. Not sure if it is a local or a chain though but that is the only one I have ever seen.

If you like McCalls, just go across the street to Wilburs and you'll change your mind. Or, head to Dudley and get some Grady's

;)

B's in Greenville by far tops the list
I'll check it out thanks

The Smoke Pit in Concord is pretty good. They haven't been open long but I've been pretty impressed the two times I've been there. It's where the Amish country store next to The Stock Market used to be.

There's a lot of bad BBQ around here though. Lancasters is crap, and I don't know why they're so popular. Kind of the same quality as Mac's Speed Shop. I stopped eating BBQ around here because everything was so disappointing. The Smoke Pit is the only local glimmer of goodness that we've found recently.

On the topic of bad BBQ, I live in Lexington, not from there, just live there, and ever since I moved there I have heard how good the BBQ is there and of course there is that dumb festival every October. I am gonna say this and yall can tar and feather me if you wish, but Lexington BBQ blows. If I have to eat pulled pork BBQ, at least do it Eastern Carolina style instead of this red shit. Rant over.

There is only one! Fat Back's Rib Shack in Fayett-nam (Fayetteville to non-locals). The best I've found and I love to pull in anytime I see a BBQ pit on the side of the road smoking!

I'll write down some of these and check them out when traveling the region. I'll agree that either location of hillbillys is great. I'm from the gulf coast and was used to beef and pork bbq. Up here in NC almost no one seems to offer chipped beef bbq except Hillbillys. They even throw in some extra outside layer if you ask

Got to be hungry to eat there. A plate lasts me a couple meals. And be ready for a line.
Closest I've found to brisket as good as in Texas. A little salty but darn close.
Now I want to go there for dinner.

Little Pigs in Newton is good but you bought need to be a local to find it. BBQ king in Lincolnton is ok, but worth the trip to watch the staff work.

I say stay away from any of the Hannah's locations. Dry & gristley.

Personally, after eating a number of the top places in Texas and other parts of the country, I just cook my own Q. Yes it takes all day but I haven't had much better. Top it with some Maple Bourbon sauce and wicked beans and you're golden.

enjoy me some Grady's...Ken's outside La Grange is real damn good too. When Scott's was open (still makin sauce),to me that was the best but alas...tis no mo.

Smokey's Shack in Morrisville. Great grub. Great folks. They have a hybrid style, Carolina meets Memphis kinda deal. If you're ever in the area, (minutes from RDU) be sure to stop in

The best I have ever found is Ridgewood BBQ up around Johnson City TN. Been in biz since the 40's from what I remember. Still ran by the same family I'm pretty sure.

Avoid The Improper Pig in Charlotte, they try to be eclectic by have 5-6 different sauces, none are worth trying. They need to trim it back and work on quality over quantity, had I not put any sauce on my pulled pork it would have been better, they did a decent job with the meat. They bring you a tray with all the sauces on it, so warm meat meets cold sauce.

I go to Lexington somewhat frequently, and I'd have to agree. Not good. I haven't found the famous Lexington BBQ yet.

I actually try to avoid that area because the lunch options suck, which tends to make shitty days at work even more shitty.

NC BBQ... :lol::lol::lol:

SC is the BBQ gods.

Y'all just don't even know. :flipoff2:

There are only a couple of ok places to eat in Lexington other than chain restaurants in my opinion, none of which are the BBQ joints.

From my time living in Charleston, I'd have to agree, at least compared to the Charlotte area. I kinda miss Home Team BBQ in West Ashley, they would collect the rib offcut scraps from the rib side orders, then make rib hash out of it every once in a while on Saturday. They'd put it on a sweet bun with green onion and pimento cheese. Absolute gut bomb of heavy richness, but so amazing.
