My parents are in need of a gas (propane) grill at their house. I've had a couple Weber grills, and always have been very happy with them. But a new one is about $500, and that price doesn't make sense for the amount of use it will see. So I've been crawling craigslist, and the only Webers I can find are $50 and already sold, or are $200+. There are a ton of other brands in the $100ish price range, but I don't know how to sort the good from the bad. I wouldn't mind getting a new one for sub $200, but I also know you get what you pay for on such simple appliances. What are other good brands, and which ones should I avoid?

I have a Weber spirit 210. It’s a 2 burner. Does everything we need for the wife and I. None of the extra fancy crap. A little over your budget @ about $300. My folks have had theirs for almost 8 years and it is still going strong and they use the hell out of it. Got mine at lowes cause 10% military discount and I’ve been super happy.

I've got a Char Broil Commercial Series 4 burner gas grill. It's not the infrared one, just regular propane. IIRC I got it for ~$200 at Lowes a few years ago (same reason as @skyhighZJ so I could nab the 10% discount - Lowes is awesome). It's all stainless, the grates are usually non-stick, but I use non-stick grill spray anyway just to make sure I don't leave half of my wife's salmon on the fire when I turn it. My dad has a Weber, so does mom-in-law. Seeing all three in action, I've got no reason that I would feel the need for me to buy a Weber (no offense intended for the expensive grill owners). I love my Char Broil.

I have a char-broil commercial 2 burner infrared. I bought it at lowes for 200. It does a pretty good job, but I'm not sure I like the infrared part. It does keep the flare ups down though.

I'm on my 2nd char-broil propane grill. It serves my needs. If they can cover it or keep it in a carport/garage and periodically scrape the grates, it should serve them for quite a few years.

I would go to Lowe’s and see what all brands they stock replacement parts for. Then look for those brands on CL.

22" Weber kettle is $150 at Home Depot. Buy a chimney and a bag of charcoal, and you'll be right at your budget.

And you won't have to suffer the indignity of cooking over propane.

I've been running the 'pane thru my old Weber Spirit for about 20years now. Replaced the burner bar once, flareup bars often (just put in some aftermarket SS ones, see how that goes), and the ignition module once. I upgraded to cast iron grates after the original stamped steel one corroded out. I have no complaints.

Already have a charcoal grill there. They want a propane grill for the convenience.

I have a Weber Spirit E-whatever from 2007 or so. It needs new cast grill grates and the folded heat spreaders below that, but it's in good shape other than that. I don't use it anymore because I bought a charcoal grill.

Want it for cheap? It would need those parts to be replaced, so I'll need to check the model number to see if parts are still available.. I've replaced the regulator and lid thermometer a few years ago. Looks like the parts are the same as the Craigslist pictures above, but it's a slightly older model.

how big of a grill are they looking for? I would get something stainless with cast grates, the rest is fairly cheap to replace if needed. If buying used, make sure its not rusted out or close to it.

Able to cook up some meat for 4-6 people. Nothing huge. Normally I would be all about stainless, but the paint on my 20 year old Weber still looks brand new when I wash the pollen off. Thats part of why I think I'm gonna go with a Weber regardless.

That's a fair point. Charcoal is hard to come by, but there's always propane when you need it.
Sometimes I feel like you've never considered any other viewpoint but your own ;)

When Shawn is acting all punctilious about shit like this, one must realize that secretly he wants or at some point in the past wanted what you are currently seeking. He chose not to acquire it because of his fear of ridicule from people he considers important and @CasterTroy . He is now giving you all the arguments that persuaded him not chase his true desires in hopes you say something so profound he can use it as his own next time he ponders the acquisition for which you are currently brave enough to pursue.

I have a gas grill and havent had a charcoal grill in a year since my knock off egg played humpty dumpty. I am less manly because of it, I suppose.
I built a giant shelf on my deck though to hold all the fucks I give about the opinion of others for my cooking choice. Shelf is still empty.

Nah, I just saw an easy opportunity to fuck with Matt.

always picking on the small slow kid...

I got my gas grill because it's super convenient. I could fire it up, cook some stuff, then shut it off and walk away. With my older gas grill when I was at school, I would come home during my break between classes and cook a burger or hot dogs for lunch and then go back to class, and I did that all the time.

I like the charcoal grill better for flavor, but the gas grill is far more convenient. I don't grill that much anymore, so when I do I use the charcoal. Speaking of that, why don't I grill more....?

Paid $50 for a used 15y/o Holland Grill 6 years ago... 99% SS construction, uses a circular burner (replaced mine with a $10 Bayou replacement), and will NOT flare-up! :flipoff2:
