Bigbody79's Questions and Ruminations

My internet sucks at my house. We piggy back off my in-laws next door. Wireless works for the most part but generally unreliable. We have a repeater at our house that seems to work when it wants to. I would like to bury a cat5e(cat6e) cable to run to a wireless router at our house. The run would be about 175ft. What do I need to do to make this work.

Either direct burial cat 5 cable OR a run of 1/2" or 3/4" PVC conduit.

If you plan on living there long term Id run the conduit. It's cheap and allows you to replace or add on later

A cantenna might be a good option for you as well, Being directional you could point straight from your roof to theirs. but if you and the in-laws are going to be there a while, I agree with Ron, bury a conduit.

How to build a tin can waveguide antenna

A waveguide type cantenna (Not a pringles cantenna, that's not a true waveguide) will give you better range than a flat directional like that. The best setup would be a cantenna at both ends pointed directly at each other if you can get a line of sight.

None the less, a cat 5 cable buried in a conduit would definitely be your best solution, and you can go up to 300ft with normal cat 5.
