:D A few of the ncttora fellas are hittin up brown mtn this sat. We are going to ride the trails that are usually just for 4 wheelers. We have spoken with the rangers allready. Yaul should really come out there and wheel with us. We will be meeting at the parking lot at 10am. Most of the surrounding stores have trail passes at the cost of 5 bucks per vehicle.

If you have already talked to the rangers, this kind of ride up there should have been done a looong time ago. I was just up there a wk. ago on my quad and couldn't believe the backside of tr. 1(the side usually closed to vehicles). There are a few sections that I believe lockers will be necessary and nothing at URE could match some of the sections of that trail.
Just go up 1 like normal take a left up 4(nice little rock face up there) and then take a left down one and have fun, but take a strap. There is a rock ledge down there that will sit any rig vertical like the one at dpg. It gets narrow down there and there aren't many places to turn around.
I've been riding quads up there for 10yrs and have been requesting more trails to be opened to vehicles for just as long. There should be a real push for these trails to be opened, if any one doesn't feel the same you need to go up there on a bike or quad and check it out yourself. I'll never take my 4wheeler down that trail again-damn near burnt up my clutch "rock launching".

it's gonna be fun I do believe

i would like to come but i don't know how to get there. i just moved lincolnton. i found some direction but they seem kind of shady. if i could get directions that would be cool.:driver:

I am shocked the Rangers have given approval for this. I don't think the dirt bike/ fourwheeler crowd is going to like it, particularly with the narrow trails and one way traffic. If you are on a bike or fourwheeler, turning around won't be an option and passing will be very difficult or impossible in places. Trail 1a in a truck would be a real experience. Post up after the trip and let us know how it goes.

The only trail I have ridden so far was trail one and it was pretty boring. I have 34s and open diffs and I never had to back up or stop to look. There should be an empty seat in the runner if someone wants to ride....My rig sucks thought.....but I beat it like like im on 44s

I can't make it but definitely take some pics so we can all see what the rest of that place looks like. I think we all agree that more trails need to be opened up for jeeps/trucks at Brown.

Just to clarify, i don't want this taken the wrong way. In the past, people have spoken to rangers while at Brown Mountain and they basically said, if you can fit on the other trails, you can ride them. I'm not going to say that this is the official pollicy of Brown Mountain, this is just what some rangers have said. We are going to check out the other trails there, and if they are worth opening up to "truck traffic" then we will try to persue getting the trails officially opened.

It should have been worded differently from the very beggining, and i will take responsibilty for that. i was the one that gave 1stgenxxx the info, and i worded it differently than i should have.

Thanks for the clarification. I have never seen 4x4's on any of the ATV trails before. Brown definitely has a lot of potential to be a fantastic 4x4 site due to the elevation change and size of the place. I would love to do some wheeling up there on the ATV trails during the week when nobody is there. A mildly built Samurai would be the perfect ATV er 4x4:D for those trails.

I have spoken about this in the past and would love to see the trails opened up. Brown could easily surpass URE if they would open it up.

It's been a few years ago, but I talked to a ranger too, and his words were, if you can fit on the trail, you can go on it. And, I was full width then too. Many years ago,(remember, I am and old fart) Before Brown was as it is today, there were trails there that were pretty hard. A few like Telico, more like Callalantee, and I had a blast up there. To be honest we went in a different way than you do now. But you did drive up to the top of Brown Mnt. It would be great to get to ride those trails again.

I had a blast! The narrow trails gave a beating to my runner. I have body damage of all kinds. Hopefully we can get more people to go sometime in July. I would like to get a group of people up there. I think that it was trail 6 that I broke a driveshaft on.pretty awsome rocks.

If anyone else wants to wheel up there then just let me know and we can try yo get something together for next month.

We used to make afternoon runs up to Brown in my CJ-7. It was on Scout axles locked f/r, sprung over with 2" sprints, Chevy 350, TH350. On the short days, we'd go up 1 then double back and take 4 back down. That's a nice ride and nothing that most mildly modified rigs couldn't handle. On days we had more time, we'd do a bit more exploring. We'd always hit the "staircase". I honestly don't know if I could find it again now. It's been a good 6 years since I've been on Brown.

trails 9 and 10 are really narrow. there are some rocks off and around the trail that were good fun. They were real clutch eaters

where are the pics? I would have loved to go but had to work until 4. I have been there before but on a fourwheeler didnt think there where many trials for 4x4.

If you followed the correct direction of traffic, then it sounds like you ran trail 9 from the top down and then turned right on trail 10 which leads you back to 1? I think the lower part of 9 where it gets very steep and narrow would be impassible for anything wide due to the narrow ass switch backs. A Sami or yota might have a chance, but there are also some short steep hills to climb on the lower part of 9 if I remember correctly. Dam, I am getting interested in going now. What vehicles where on this trip? Did you have any trouble with the ATV traffic? Was the place busy? See any Rangers? Dammit man, post some pics, I wish I had been there:fuck-you:

We had a good time. Saw no rangers the entire day, and we were on the trail from 11:00 am to 5:30. One time i heard a guy on a dirtbike say "what are these guys thinking?"....that was when we were sliding past the big rock near the intersection of 9 and 1. We held up a group of two dirtbikes for maybe 30 seconds one time, because we were looking for a place to pull over. They weren't happy, but needed to chill out a little. Other than that everything was cool. Parking lot was almost full at 11:00 when we hit the trails, so it was fairly crowded. We had 2 first gen Toyotas, an 85 runner, and two tacomas. Only the old beat trucks ran 9 and 10.

We went up trail 1 to trail 4. Up 4 to the intersection with 2. Turned left on 2 and went and played on the big rocks. Turned around, went back up all the way to the top of 1. Came down one to 6, up 6 back to 1. Took 1 back around to 9 then turned right onto 10 which took us back to 1, and then came back down.

Here's a link to the pics we took. http://www.ncttora.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1348

9 and 10 were very tight, and i would not suggest anyone that is fullsize going on them. Even if you are in a sami or a toyota that is narrow, be prepared for damage from rocks and trees.

Forgot to add, this would be an awesome place if it were allowed to be. There are tons of huge rocks off the trail. Devils playground sort of stuff. If every trail there was 3 feet wider, it would easily be better than UNF.

Oh, Brown has the potential to be a Tellico-lite if it were allowed to become that. I've moved away from the area, but even when I was still there my visits became fewer and farther between due to the dirtbikers. Most of that crowd are just plain @$$holes if you ask me. They think they own the place and some will flip you off and try to spin dirt and rocks on you simply because you're there and they don't like it. When I hear them coming, I do my best to get to the side and let them buy. It's no skin off my back, just let them go, I'm creeping along anyway, so it's not really going to delay me any. But, they want to get an attitude anyway. As soon as you hop out the Jeep and want to say something, they speed off. Punk @$$ #&*%#!!!

linvillegorge, i know just what you are talking about. me and a buddy were talking about how stupid the ATVers and dirtbikers were. i had some trouble on a line at URE and they acted like we were taking up the whole park while being there. i didnt pay much attention to it though, i just had fun and wheeled the piss out of my bronco.

Yeah, I don't know why they think it's such a horrible thing for off-roaders to be out on the trails. I know they like to zoom around and all, but there usually aren't too many Jeeps/trucks out on Brown, so it's not like they're horribly delayed. I could see them getting ticked if we didn't get out of the way, that could get dangerous. But for guys like me who give them pretty much the whole trail and let them pass? I mean c'mon, what gives? When they give me attitude, that makes me wanna whup some @$$!
