So I'm looking at buying a piece of land and want to put a shop on it. I would love to have a 50x100 building with a 50x50 attic style second floor for living space/office. But I don't think I will be able to afford that. So what I'm looking for is a building layout program to to design a few different sizes, compare the spaces, and then compare the differences in cost for the building.

What free/inexpensive programs are out there.

I used Sketchup it's free to use i used it for my building add on.

Have you got any good friends in construction/design?

Anyone with AutoCad could pound out a simple plan for pricing in an hour or less.

I'm in the middle of exactly what you are wanting to do. I bought 7 acres to drop a shop/apartment on the back to live in while we build a house on the front of the property

Red iron? Morton style?

There are several folks on here that have just finished red iron buildings. Not as LONG as what you want (more square) but tall enough to have a second floor built

As far a morton style, figure $90 sqft for conditioned and $75 sqft for unconditioned garage space. $25sqft for awning or outside bay with gravel floor
Of course that's single floor. No idea how 2 floor pricing would be.

My dreams my be out of my budget.... considerably... I'm thinking stick built, fully insulated, radiant floor, conditioned. Big dreams with a penny budget. I don't want to go getting quotes or bothering people at this point. Year or so before I could get real serious about it
