Built not bought

@iwaxmyjimmy - what's the point of your post? Do I wish I could build rigs like @Jody Treadway @mcutler @XJsavage and all of the vendors on this forum, and everyone that builds their own stuff (sorry for leaving anyone out - no disrespect intended) and rocks the shit out of it? Fuck yea I do! But I don't have the skill, the training, the equipment to do so. So am I looked down on because I choose to support the folks that have this knowledgeable and skill, by paying my hard earned money for their dedication to listen to my needs, offer their input, and build what's best for me? I buy because of where I am in life. I support the vendors on this forum. If someone thinks that makes me less of a wheeler, I'd gladly buy them a beer or two while we discuss.

Did you read the whole thread or just skip to the end and give your opinion like what I was asking in the original post?

I don't care whether you built it or you bought it, just as long as you know how to wheel it and fix it!

I wanted a truck that I could not afford to pay someone else to build so I built it myself. Only "farmed out" the couple things I lacked the precision skill or equipment to do (gear work, re-tubing and installing Cs on my D60, and TIGing the portal plates for the rear axle). The rest took me forever, I am proud of it, but by no means does it make me any better than the next guy who paid for the privilege.

You didn't answer my question. What's the point of your post? But to answer your question, yes , I've read every post on this thread and I agree with most of them. I'll stay in the woods all night long rather then leave you there as long as you're committed to helping, like most of your responders.

The way I read your responses, you're posts in this thread seem to lie to the side of built it, rather than bought it.

Building your on rig is kind of like breaking your on horse. You know everything there is to know about it how it acts what it needs, what it's capable of. Now you can buy a horse that's already broke but it'll never be the same. Do what you want just go have a damn ball most of all.

I stated earlier that I tend to get along with the builder folks. Mainly Bc I'm always willing to learn something that'll help me with my builds. But I don't think of my self as better than them because at one time I had no clue what did what. I'm helping a friend replace the axle joints on his solid axle swapped xterra, just so he knows how to do it before he takes it to Harlan. I've got the tools and know how so why not teach and educate. Doesn't mean I know it all but it helps to pass on what you know. And this same guy has paid me to do some work on his xterra. So it doesn't matter to me as long as your cool, easy going, and don't take sarcasm to seriously. Also can't stand the guys that are like you need this, this, and this to even go wheeling. Or the ones stuck in the 90s tech when it comes to wheeling and building.

Sounds like I should buy you a brew over a good discussion. By the way, the one that got away was a 77 Jimmy on 33's manual transmission but with the 305. That was a great rig. Wish it had a 350.

The movie Commando and the project big blaze on Trucks back in the late 90s early 2000's was why I fell in love with them. My '87 I bought when I was 18 as 350TBI/700R4/NP208. Ive had it for 11 years now and it's still a work in progress. I'll never sell it.

I don't have a problem with either one. I love building/tinkering so 95% of my willys will be built by me. The gearing/cage work etc will be done by others as I lack the necessary tools/experience to do it correctly. I have no issue with someone dropping a ton of money on a rig that is built by someone. My biggest issue is if you break, HELP! Even if you have no clue whatsoever, you can still be the gopher for tools/parts etc and you will learn by doing. I can't stand the people that break and expect someone else to get them off the trail.
