Calling all the Jeep guys

Read the thread title expected a thread about guy on guy intercourse. :D

Not sure why there's all this negative talk about Jeep reliability. I've driven multiple 4.0 jeeps to well over 100,000 miles with minimal problems. Of course a CJ is a different story completely, and while they're no Toyota, every TJ I've owned has been a solid, reliable vehicle.

Driving a vehicle over 100k miles without any major problems isn't really that big of a deal now days. I would call it a reliable engine when it passes 200k without issues. Most Toyota engines do this and some go 300k plus.

BTW, my current 4.0 has 298k, and still going strong......

I enjoyed my 1980 CJ-7 but no way would I have wanted to daily drive it. It handled so bad at highway speeds I could barely check my speed or gauges without drifting. It kept me on my toes for sure. Especially after hitting a good bump. I never knew which way it was going to point. Had to be ready. The manual brakes take some planning. I remember having to slam the breaks to avoid an accident several car lengths ahead of me. I still had to hit the grass to miss it. The turd wouldn’t stop. There was always some form of an electrical gremlin to fight. The 258 ran like a sewing machine though. Never had any engine problems. I’d definitely buy another CJ, but if I was gonna ride in “comfort”, I’d go for the TJ.

And you'll notice, most of the comments about Jeep were made by Jeep folks

Yup, and here I am after this thread has started and talked about scary CJ driving, trying not to talk myself into a 60 year old M38A1 that has all but about fallen into my lap. I'm actually trying to convince the boss to give me an advance on my allowance.

I’m in the same boat. I found a 7 on tons and 40’s with a 383 that I probably look at 5 times a day and drool. If it wasn’t so far away from me it’d already be in the driveway.

Quoted for truth!

My 04’ Camry. I wouldn’t hesitate to drive her to Cali right now if I needed to. Dead serious, wouldn’t bat an eye. But I would put some gas in it.

Buy a toyota
Just sayin :smokin:

I've got 4 buddies that are mechanics and own their own shops. All 4 will tell you the same thing: "If you want something to drive and not have to mess with, buy a honda or a toyota"

I fought that for years until I owned one of each. The only vehicles that I've only put oil, brake pads, timing, tires on with ZERO issues. the camry we sold to one of our new engineers for his daughters first car. It has 425k on it when she started driving it.

Wait, wait! One more...My manager has a Tacoma TRD that he bought new, now has almost 350k miles on it. That little fucker just won't die. He said he's made it a point now to see just how far it'll go before it won't anymore.
Ok, now we can get back on topic. :smokin:

The issue isnt the amount of miles that they will run, its the fact that there are quite a few common issues with that era jeep that average joe often ends up spending large amounts of money on without solving it. Granted, this is due to wannabe mechanics who dont know their heads from their assholes, but thaylt doesnt change the fact that the person is out a lot of money due to the jeep. All makes have problems loke this, theh are just a LOT more common on jeeps.
Almost forgot, that gen camry isnt all that great either, at least not the 4 cylinders. If they dont get 3-5k mile ocis, they usually throw a rod before 200k.

Thanks for the positive words of encouragement...

My 4cyl Camry is going strong with 5-6k oil changes. I intend to drive it to 350k or better.
