Cash for clunkers.

Yep, now it is $2B: "The House of Representatives voted Friday to rush $2 billion into the popular but financially strapped "cash for clunkers" car purchase program, heeding calls from U.S. consumers who hope to keep taking advantage of the trade-in incentives."

Does anyone else see something similar to the housing collapse coming for the automakers? I picture a ton of people that can't afford a new car payment going out and trading their POS for brand new cars. Spending dollars they can't afford to save dimes.

And fu** our government for adding more money to this program. Spending tax payer dollars to "bail-out" the auto industry once again.

yep...the ONLY positive I see is this 2B is coming from the previous bail out money...so maybe in some small way bail out money will go to a better cause (not good, better)

It told me this was private, and wouldn't let me view it, but here it is embeded so others can see it.

I blew up 10 today the longed one took 6 min and it was a old ford convertion van that only had 60k on the clock the 99 cherokee that I did only lasted 2 min and also did a acura that blew in about 30 sec but we have so many more to go hate to do it but got to say some are fun to blow but others it hurts

I thought about trading in my 4runner till I found out they were blowing them up. Now, hell no. To nice of a vehicle to be destroyed. (And it's been rolled over) I'd part it out and sell the engine and stuff first. I'd rather keep an older vehicle on the road that someone who can't afford a new vehicle could use.

I think the list of cars that qualifies is way out of wack for this program. After being around a week of all my dealership in my route, most of the cars being taken out are OBD2 cars wich are the "cleaner" cars. My take was there'd be alot of late 70's and 80's model cars being swaped in but mostly I'm seeing late 90's to a 03 explore with 35,000 miles on it today that looked better than half the cars on the lot that were new! Makes no sense to me.

they have to be 85 and newer

I want that job.
You WANT the job of destroying a perfectly good engine that COULD have still been running fine ten years from NOW, just because someone wanted more MONEY than they could have gotten for a regular trade in or selling it themselves?

Fine. You go DO that little thing.

I'm almost glad my 90 S15 doesn't qualify because it gets NINETEEN MPG. If and when I ever decide to get something else, I'd sell it for $50 cash before I'd do that to it.

I'll be posting a link to this on some other boards, on Yuku (used to be ezboard) so people who aren't into cars and/or offroading will see what they do to these "clunkers".

Easy killer,no need to get your soap box out :shaking:.I think it's one of the stupidest things they ever came up with but it's here and happenin now so there's no need to cry over spilt milk. The bad part is that most of the ones I see being crushed are alot nicer than most of the vehicles I've owned. When this is all over and done with a large portion of these new cars will be back at the bank because people can't pay for them.I'm willing to bet that by Christmas we start hearing about the bank's takin a hit on all these cars.I guess it could be worse, they could be giving all these cars and a lifetime gas vouchere to some unwed mother of 10.

Knock yourself out if it makes you sleep better, but if they aren't into cars/motorsports they're probably not gonna care much.

FWIW...any vehicle you see you can go buy for $4600 before it is destroyed.

I have a friend who was coming through Spartanburg yesterday saw a pristine 90 F150 4x4 about to get the axe (the truck belonged to another mutual friend and had less than 40k on it)...he walked in asked for the GM, told him he anted to buy it before it was crapped out and bought it for $4600 the dealership just doesnt file for reimbursement on that vehicle.... now I think he may have over paid...but it IS a nice truck and makes him happy

I was just thinking the same thing about the Toyota Sequoia in the background in the volvo film. For $4600 I think that's a pretty good deal, even if it needs a trans.
