so the CB in my Jeep stopped receiving, and considering it is almost 10 years old and it was a cheap one to begin with, I think I got my money’s worth.

So I am in the market for a new one. What do you like? What is junk? If it matters I have a 6’ tunable firestick that will be attaching to it.

Bearcat 880. That’s what Chris runs that you looked at and like. Chris also left his on and in the pouring rain on his Jeep all day that Friday and it was fine.

Mine that you looked at was the Cobra 29LX. Both great radios that can be tuned well and especially work well with your tunable antenna. Look on Facebook market place and you can pick one up cheap.

I had an old radio shack unit for years that was awesome. When the ure dust finally killed it, lol, I put a cobra 29 in my trail rig.

My Uniden 550XL is great in my ZJ.

Yeah, we hate when people use a can of spray instead of a grenade to take down a wasp nest
If that's what you need to make you feel more like a man, then so be it. I've never needed more (folds pocket knife and throws log over shoulder)

Y’all still use cbs? VHF seems to work much better.

I've said it before, but might as well say it again...

You can buy a Chinese handheld for $25 that sounds a million times better than any CB and will talk farther than any "peaked and tuned" AM radio. Hook it up to a little 3dB whip, and it'll talk all over ure with 5 watts.

While I am a ham and never shy away from pushing it .... if yer the only one in the trail group, your vhf is useless.
Does it work , Yep! I've ridden ridden URE while talking with friends in G-boro using repeaters.
But I couldn't talk to the trail leader.
For trail groups ..... Whatever the cheapest thing I can find at the pawn shop that I like ( and works) and a stainless steel whip.
Gonna buy new? Cobra, Uniden, big names are always a safer bet.
I have one or two taking up space here i would sell .....

Not true. You can call 911. In fact, that's the entire reason I got my license. We were at URE and came across a lady on RML that had fallen from her horse and had a head injury and a concussion. All I could do for her was transport her to the horse camp, since we knew there was a veterinarian and a land line there. It's a pretty helpless feeling to be riding along with an injured person and know that the only thing you can do is drive them to help. If things had been really bad, we could have patched through to 911, and even talked directly to EMTs.

But I couldn't talk to the trail leader.

Having a CB wouldn't fix that.

A $30 FRS might, though....

For the noob...FRS?

Well technically a non licensed operator can use a licensed radio in an emergency situation but without having taken the course and talked to local people, but wouldn't necessarily know how to use the rig to get help..

Right. If you're not using the radio on a regular basis, you're not going to know how to change the channel, much less which repeater to patch through (or how) to make a phone call...

PM sent to see f perhaps you would be interested in selling one :D

I just prefer a CB since that’s what everyone else runs. It’s simple and reliable enough for our use. We are typically talking to each other within eye site anyway.

I have used little Walmart 2 way radios before. They are nice and work well, clearer than a CB without needing to “tune” them or need an antenna setup just right. But I like the CB for being mounted in a permanent location and a hard wired power source.
However, the big thing with a handheld is being able to communicate so easily with others while outside the vehicle too. Like spotting and such. I guess the best of both worlds would be a handheld that could talk with CBs and have a charger in the Jeep.

So slight derail, but still probably could help answer some questions in this thread as to CB vs FRS vs VHF/UHF: I've been looking into getting the in laws farm set up with a few handhelds. Cell service at most of the property is garbage. US Cellular is the "best" and spotty at that. From any given spot near the house, its 3-5 miles in a straight line between the house and property and same from one property to another. Southwest VA, rolling hills, no real line of sight, mostly woods and farm fields. The absolute most it would be is 10 miles point to point but those two places are way up on top of the mountain and the "base" of sorts being the house is down in the valley below. What would be the better option for communication? Base units are out of the question because we could be driving any number of trucks or even the tractors depending on what is being done.

just saw the pm ....

MY point is it would be useless for the group if you are the only one with vhf, just like frs would be if you were the only one in the group with it.
You need what the group is using.
I know VHF can be used for 911 calls, etc. I have logged many hours of emergency communications.
