So I want a gun that I can use for conceal carry and home defense as well have some fun at the range/plinking. A few guns that really catch my eye are the Springfield XDS 9mm, the Taurus 790 slim 9mm, the Ruger .380 lcp, and the ruger 22/45 lite....now I know that the 22/45 lite is more of a plinking gun and I have heard mixed reviews on the Taurus 790 slim 9mm but at the price of $349 with two mags sounds pretty good. I went up to Gander mountain last night and held the ruger lcp, 22/45, and the Taurus slim. That ruger lcp .380 is pretty bad ass with the laser on it. 22/45 lite feels really good and the Taurus feels really good. I've never shot any of the guns yet, but just wanted some more info on which of these do you guys feel would be good for all 3 cases besides the 22/45 as a conceal carry.
Conceal carry, home defense, Plinking/range

XDS 9 mm- Taurus 790 slim 9 mm - ruger lcp .380

When I was looking for a ccw/backup gun I looked at the lcp and lc9. They were ok, but I wasn't that blown away. I ended up getting the khar cm9 and it is a really good shooting gun. It is slim and pretty compact but still holds 6 round of 9mm.

The gun your looking for probably doesn't exist.

You have to make compromises to cow a gun.

I think of a pinker as a 22. I'm not betting my life on a 22.

Home defense gun would be a full size gun in a perfect world.

And I'd look for the right gun and not the cheapest gun.

SIG P239 might work for ccw and home defense. I CCW one.

XDS .45 is my every day carry ( EDC ) shoots awesome
if you want a all around good gun for all 3 needs conceal carry , home defense , range/plinking i say look at the SR9C
45 cost to much to just go out & shoot/plink & 9mm should not brake the bank unless you reload then it does not matter
the XDS 9mm is also a great gun but i would go with a SR9C b/c you can put a 17 rd mag out of a full size in is & it will fell like a full size & have it for a home defense/range gun & then put the 10 rd mag in it for EDC CCW
just my .02

Sorry but you are really all over the board.
Set your priorities and then you can evaluate.

Sticking just with what you listed...
(I think there are several notables you've lie off, but I'm assuming you've evaluated and eliminated thoseformyour personal reasons)
If home defense is in the equation I think the LCD or 22/45 are under powered.
So that leaves the two 9s. You are comparing to gins at pretty different quality levels/ price points, and it's not fair to the Taurus TI compare it to the XDS honestly. That's said I own the XDS and I wouldn't buy the Taurus slim 9... But that's a personal opinion. I'm. OT a fan of Taurus in any of the configurations I've ever shot.

If we start expanding the conversation, the xdm9, the m&p and glock make great options in ful size and compact/sub compact...and the Kahr cm9/cw9 mentioned above is a great gun. I carry one every day.

What is "plinking"?
Guns scare me.
Just asking.......

My wife and I both carry wheel guns, Ruger LCR .38(hammer less)
Not the cheapest thing to plink with but a sweet little gun. Fits inside my Dan Post boots just fine.
I am not an auto shooter, just give me a wheel gun LOL!

I did recently shoot a Sig Saur that i really liked, not sure of the model. It was a 9mm and had a very similar trigger pull to a revolver. I must say I was very accurate with that gun.

I'm also looking and the S&W bodyguard .380

This is a nice gun, very comfortable and easy to carry. Ammo isn't expensive comparatively speaking. People can knock on a .380 all they want but nobody wants to get shot with a .380 hollow point:D and it will stop someone. I'll be owning a second one very soon.

Plinking guns are usually smaller caliber, but larger framed guns. CCW is pretty much the opposite, and home defense guns are usually larger frames and larger caliber. So to get the jack of all trades will be cumbersome to say the least.

I'll vote for a semi auto 9mm, but not the Taurus. Buying a Taurus is a toss up, some are great, but some are horrendous and plagued by malfunctions. I don't trust them enough to bet my life on them. 9mm Ammo is cheap enough to plink/target shoot, the guns can be small enough to CC, yet it's powerful enough to use for home defense. I'd say a Glock 19 or 26, a S&W M&P 9, or the already mentioned Kahr CM9, or the Springfield you mentioned. I'm a fan of Ruger's too, but if I were going to get an LC9 it wouldn't have the laser unless it had the button on the grip. I don't like how far you have to stretch your hand out to activate the one that mounts on the front of the trigger guard. It makes holding the gun awkward unless you turn it on with your off hand.

That said, my home defense hand gun is a .40, and that's just until I can get to a long gun. My carry gun is a .38 Special. I don't own a 9mm but that's not to say I wouldn't.

I just recently bought the Taurus PT111 G2 9mm, Ive put at least 100 rnds through it and its performed excellent. Not a single FTF or FTE. Basically same size as the XDS 9/45 (fits XDS holsters), with 12+1 capacity (9mm), and is comfortable to carry IWB. 9mm ammo is cheap enough to go "plinking" and +P hollow points have stopping power for ccw and home protection.I looked into it b/c it was in several gun mags I read and got great reviews.. Just my .02 and another viable option for you...

BTW those of you with an XDS, if you don't know already, there is a recall on them.

If you're a fan of the 1911 and you ever put your hands on a Para, you'll want one. They're not exactly cheap, although they have a few that aren't too terribly expensive. I carry an "older" P10 (subcompact, .45, 10+1 double stack), but I really want a new, stainless Warthog (same gun basically) and I'd love to have on of their 9mm pistols too so I could afford to burn some ammo. A big plus to me is they've been made in North Carolina since 2009.

For some reason they're kinda underrated and most people I talk to have never heard of them. I see it as their misfortune :D

Just get a moderately sized, moderately priced 9mm. It'll be a compromise in all areas, but it'll do the trick.

I carry a kel-tec pf9. Not the perfect gun, but 9mm is a decent round, its a smaller, slim gun, fairly easy tp conceal, and very affordable (really effin cheap for a decent gun), replacement parts are cheap. I have no complaints about it other tham the fact it doesnt like Winchester ammo, although i have several guns that don't like winchester ammo. I just use that crap for plinking anyway.

I'll be in the market for a glock 30sf next, I'm ready to step up. Love the way my buddies .45 shoots.

I've got a glock 27, ruger lc9, s&w sw9ve ,and a ruger mark lll 22/45 as well as a few 357 smith revolvers if you want to try some guns out and see what you like. I'm not far from high point so just shoot me a pm if interested. Also I would recommend a drive over to Colfax gun and ammo. Talk to Ronnie he is super guy. Bit of a glock whore but he will shoot straight with you.

Carry=kel-tec PF9
home protection=.45 in the bed room and a few 9mm's hidden around the front room & kitchen
plinking= Rugar 10/22 or marlin 60 gold trigger
longrange= custom made .270 off a mauser action.

I carry a xds or xdm both 45 it just depends on what im wearing. I have two 12 gauge shotguns for home defense. My plinking gun is my 22 ar15 or my pellet gun i can get 500 rounds for the 22 for the same price as 25 rounds for my 45s a lot cheaper and more fun

I've shot a lot of pistols and carried a lot of pistols concealed over the years with my job. When I started carrying I did the normal thing, I went with a full frame gun that shoots great and feels good in my hand. The trouble is it turns out to be just too heavy and bulky to carry all day, day on end. You don't need a double stack with a 20rnds to be a carry gun. It gets heavy 18 hours into the day and you'll quit carrying it because of this. I personally don't like anything I can't keep every round in the 8 ring at 25 yards. You'll never have to use a carry pistol at this kinda range, matter of fact if you do, chances are your gonna get your ass fried! But this made it very hard on me to find a perfect gun. I tried double/single, wheel guns, I tried everything. I ended up with a Kahr CW9. Perfect balance of a pistol. I got mine before they come out with the CM9, or I would have it. I've carried mine every day for 4 years and put thousands of round through it and NEVER had any problems. My dad has bought one and his has be the same quality. Another thing to think of is a holster. You need to brake down and spend some money on a good one. They can make carrying great or terrible. I prefer the crossbreed "style" IWB holster. They feel wonderful and I'm even known to work on cars with mine on and that's laying on my side!

SIG P250.

I have a package called the "2sum". You exchange the fire control group (trigger mechanism) between multiple frames. Mine came with a full size and subcompact frame and magazines for both. I can buy the compact frame if I want to have all 3 sizes. Mine is a 9mm and I use it for "plinking" (just shooting at the range. MY carry gun is 357SIG and I don't want to afford having fun at the range with it.

I ccw a kel tec .380 every day. I have a SA 1911A1 and an 870 for home defense. I have a SR9 for fun/home defense also. There is no perfect gun for all 3. What you carry depends on your body size and what you do. There is no way in hell that I could conceal a full sized weapon. I am stuck with the micro compacts. Plinking and home defense - there are plenty of options. CCW - you have to find what fits you and what you are comfortable shooting.

I have a sig p250 in the 9mm version. Great feeling gun & eats any type of ammo.

I hate the long trigger pull, I understand that it's a safty. However after the first pull it's reset is just as long as the first pull. This will give accuracy issues on a double tap. This gun will not handle +p ammo either..

I should have clarified in my original post....I know that there is no gun that can fullfil all 3 categories. I am new to the gun world and trying to learn as much as I can. I really want something I can CCW and possibly use at home for right now. I really like the XDS. Being in our first home, I feel that I need something.... If I could choose anything for a CCW, I think Id take the Ruger .380 LCP, but If I could choose something that I could use to CCW and possibly use for a sort of home defense till I got something bigger....I think I'd go XDS 9mm although that damn XDM is nice and comes with alot out of the box. Really looking for something below $500 to get me started. Someone mentioned Colfax gun & ammo...I wanna check them out.
The guy at Gander that I spoke with was very knowledgeable and was very helpful, but said they can't even sell the XDS right now because of the recall.
He said that the Taurus was a nice gun to start with but the slim 9mm I held, I wasn't crazy about the trigger pull. and will do the job but like someone else mentioned...he could be a flop. my father in law said he has a millinium few years back and loved it but he said something about Taurus and compact guns that just doesn't mix.
I like the fact that the bodyguard comes with the laser out of the box, although I haven't held one yet....that damn ruger LCP .380 feels so nice with the pinky extension.....
So many choices.....

I haven't shot the Bodyguard, but a friend carries one and it seems like a nice little gun. I would consider one if I was looking at pistols that size, caliber, and cost.

Are any of the Taurus 9mm's worth looking at? I was interested in the PT111 Millenium 9mm. I know price isn't everything but they are all so well priced and well within my budget.
