I have a Craftsman Top Hand Chainsaw. Presumably the Poulan 2000 with a Walbro WT20 Carb. I have disassembled the carb and throughly cleaned it as well as put fresh two stroke mix in the gas tank. I am able to get the saw to start and idle almost indefinitely but as soon as I try and give the saw any throttle it chokes it self out. I suspect I am running the saw too rich. Any help on what the initial H/L setting are on this carb? Any any tips on adjusting it after that?
 
Might be easier to just buy a new carb but also make sure you have good spark air and exaust is free of obstruction
 
You might have better luck on www.arboristsite.com (the pirate4x4 of chainsaws, without the attitude). If you have no other starting point, turn all the screws all the way in, and then out 1 turn and adjust from there.

Every saw is different. If you have a model number off the saw, I can do a little more digging.
 
Well the aggravating part is that I can get it cranked and to idle. Just not more than that. Ill track down a model number tonight

Stiff diaphragm that won't pump enough fuel to support throttle? I had a stihl with a fuel line that would collapse when you pulled the throttle once.

This commonly happens to rubber isolated saws of all brands (though your top handle might not be) the fuel line develops tiny cracks and starves the saw of fuel at anything above idle. But first, try messing with the mixture screws.
 
What @catfishblues said, you need new diaphragms. They've hardened over time from being stored with fuel in the saw. Doesn't matter what you do with the screws, it will never "pump" fuel to the carb. Small engine mechanic of over ten years here, so I wouldn't steer you wrong.
 
Alright so should I order then carb rebuild kit off amazon?

They typically have the best prices I've found on the common stuff. You might want to just search for the carb, though. If you can get it for $20-30, you'd be money to the good vs. the time it takes to rebuild twice. I say twice because you almost always miss something the first time. Like avoiding popping out the Welch plugs because you don't want to deal with it and feel confident you got everything, but it still runs like crap and that's the last passage it could be in, so you have to pull it off and do what you should have done in the first place which, of course, fixes it. Not that I've ever done that or anything.
 
So, how much do you suppose it would be to have someone that knows what they are doing look at this saw. I don't want to dump money into it if it's just not going to work.
 
get a can of Seafoam and fill the cylinder and carb up with it. Let it sit for about 8 hours and then pull the spark plug out and empty the cyl. Keep the plug wire out of the way and pull the rope a couple of times. Then see if it will start. I have had a lot of luck doing that with small engines. the ethanol in gas craps up a small carb fast.
 
Just buy a new carb. Ethanol is killing 2 cycle carbs within a couple weeks sometimes. You may buy a kit and find out that you need a carb. The kits have gotten expensive since they're in such high demand.
I own a landscape company. I haven't used ethanol fuel in almost 3 years and I've saved so many headaches and money compared to what I used to.
Even with clean fuel, have it tested or buy a tester, keep fuel filters handy, and replace fuel lines when you do the carb.
 
Ok, bringing this back to the top.

Took it to the shop to get it worked on. Guy told me that the carb was bad and that he could not fix it. Found a carb on ebay and bought it. They are a no longer available item.

Hopefully will be getting the carb in the next few days.

Would you let the guy put the carb on or should I get the saw and do it myself.
(I don't feel so bad that I couldn't get it running now that he says the carb is bad.)
 
Alright, new carb is on. Saw will now start but still wouldn't rev very well. Might just take it back to the guy.


New problem John Deere 317 Kolher KT17QS

I am getting no spark to either plug.
I have 12v to the + side of the coil
I have looked at the points and they appear new.

However, there is this blue wire coming off the positive side of the coil but I don't know where it goes or is supposed to go. Might be my problem.

No saftey break on this model. I took the chain off. It did get past idle but only briefly. Put the bar and chain back on. It idled ok but wouldn't go past that. Any more throttle and it chokes out. There seems to be quite a bit of gas coming out of the top of the carb.
