I'm looking at a Harbor freight winch. They have a 10000lbs winch for $400. Now I've never owned a winch and I've heard alot of threads bashing the chicago brand tools. This is not a trail rig but from time to time I need a winch. Guys let me know what you think.

yep....Thats the best way to go on a cheapist new winch....I'd get it thought 4wp. The winches have a 2 years parts warranty and 4wp can handle the parts for you.

I destroyed a 10K champinion winch the first time it was ever used. I broke the fairlead and gears inside the winch. NO way I was pulling 10k.

Where is the closest 4wp or is it catolog orderer only?

Should've taken pictures yesterday!

Pulled a 10K# trailer *diagonally* with a medium Bobcat on it with my now 7 year old HF 4000# (debadged Ramsey REP8000).

The whole mess was the result of some guys out scraping driveways and trying to pull the hill going 5mph . When I arrived the trailer was off the hitch and trailer + Bobcat in danger of sliding off & down a 20' embankment. With the trailer chained to truck, trailer angled off the very snow/ice covered road on 35* grade, & the Bobcat couldn't be unloaded.

I backed off the far side into the ditch, hooked the cable about near the back corner of the trailer and snatched it over about 5'... it did pull the Moss about 3' up outta the ditch, but was surprised it moved it at all! :flipoff2:

there is a vendor on here that has good deals on Tmax winches.....

I've been thinking about gettin one for my trailer...my come-a-long is gettin old

I have a 6K warn I did some trading on awhile back that needs new sylenoids that I plan on mounting on the trailer after I get around to fixing it.

I bought a used 8000 lb chicago winch about 4 years ago. It has been on the front of my daily driver/ trail rig for years, exposed to the elements. I have never had a problem with my winch. Ive used it at least 40 times, everything from bending metal on bush hogs to winching out F150s, jeeps, chevy 3/4 tons and all kinds of other trucks. Its also pulled me sideways at a 90 degree angle out of mud over my tires. I love my winch and I would not hesitate to buy another one of this brand. I payed $175 for it and has been worth its weight in gold.
However, the black control box (sylenoid?) has always been mounted under my hood and out of the elements. I dont know if that has anything to do with mine lasting so long. When I need to use, it I just pop the hood, plug in the remote and close the hood.

I look at winches like other items you dont need everyday, but when you do, they need to work flawlessly.
I dont buy cheap torque wrenches, cheap oil, or cheap safety gear. I want good stuff to do what I need it to do.
This is one place where you can spend your money once, and transfer the winch to many, many future vehicles and get great performance each time. My 2 cents.

What do you sell a 8 to 10 k winch for?

Hey Mark...As a friend of mine, I'd like to point you to another friend of mine.
Greg Slade at 4wheel parts of Raleigh has donated several winches to fundraising raffles to various 4wheeldrive clubs. He is constantly supporting our sport by donating all kinds of stuff. I have been lucky enough to win 2 of the winches that Greg has donated, Both have been the XRC8's.
I'd just like to recomend that you strongly consider doing winch business w/ Greg.

I'll try to steer him as many winch purchases as I can....so...maybe he will keep his generosity flowing!;)

Dont tell em' I sent ya, or they'll charge ya extra!
They'll ship it fast too!

Just read the entire 23 pages about the XRC8 winch on pirate. Looks like I need to start saving my pennies for this winch. Seemed to get overall good reviews other than it's a bit slow. Should be perfect for my XJ since it will just be a once or twice a month wheeler.

Thanks Dylan, I'll have to get in touch with him. I plan on getting something in the next few weeks.

Smittybilt is the way to go....more bang for ya buck

I just bought the XRC8000 smittybilt from a guy on craigslist...met him in fayetteville when i was there saturday...brand new in the box for $250...theres another one a diff guy has thats brand new in the box for the same price. it was around the fayetteville area as well..if he still has it.....i bought a near new ramsey rep8000 last week (actually traded for it) for my rig and the xrc8000 is going on my car trailer....fabbing up the mounting bracket tomorrow!!!!:flipoff2:

BTW..i went to HFT today to exchange my electric winch under warranty..that made number 3...the solenoid boxes dont hold up under the elements....bout 3 months is all i get out of them and that was the reason i bought the xrc8000.

if i remember right superwinch solenoids work, its been a while but the champion/hft/chicago ele/ are built by the same companies that build the big name winches. with some research you can probably find better solenoids.

but...why fix crap. you cant turn chicken shit into chicken soup. go ahead an buy the big name winches.

I'll weigh in with my experience.

I have NEVER had any problems with WARN winches. I have one now that has been on the rig, out in the elements for 8 years and has always worked flawlessly. I kinda agree with Joey on this. Figure that's $100 a year for a quality winch, granted I don't have to use it that often :)

OTOH, I have also had two of the XRC8 winches and have one on my ZJ right now. When it was time to get another winch, 4WP had the XRC on sale plus for $125 more I got a LIFETIME warranty from 4WP! The XRC8 is a little slow, compared to the WARN, but it gets the job done for half the price. I guess to get the same value as I have gotten from WARN I need for the XRC to last 4 years. And even if it does there's the speed issue to consider.

Bottom line, with finances what they are nowadays I would probably opt for the XRC again if the WARN decided to give up, and would definitely get the lifetime warranty added!

smittybilt is the way to go i got an xrc8 and it pulled a stock 250 out of a foot and a half of mud the other day without so much as a whimper. have only used about 6 times but so far it is great

Another plug for the Smittybuilt, XRC8. I have one on the front of my Jeep, and it's heavy! Only issue I have had was the loss of battery power, not the winch's fault!
My son bought one also, and got the warranty.
