i have a 95 zj and i've been running it rwd for a while now, i have a front ds from a 97' that i need lengthed and everybody i talked to wanted to charge upwards of $80. i'm just wondering if anyone knows of wa place i could get it done for chepaer than that? thanx in advance

There are a couple ways of lengthening a shaft. Depending on how they are doing it that is a good price. Much cheaper than that and they are splicing in a piece instead of retubing the shaft.

Just make your own! :D But really I cut down a F250 shaft and put my ends on it to lengthen mine for the rear in the FJ and i couldnt be more happy.

But to have a professional lengthen your shaft and balance it ect., $75-80 is the going price.

Just retubed my front and balanced it at fleetpride on jones sausage road for $118. took them 4 hours on thursday and it looks great. Also look at triangle driveshaft in durham.

if your Zj still has the D30, without vaccuum disconnect or hubs, id not make your own... It will be spinning all the time, and anything out of round or balance will vibrate... Lots of us make our own, even square, but have locking huns to keep it from spinning all the time...

Hugh

PS, I dont think $80 is to bad of a price if they use all new tube, the local place up here usually charges about $100 or so for the short rear ive been using...

where did those of you with square fronts get your reciver tubing?

Square front shafts are sooooo last month......PTO shaft is whats going on now! :D

But to keep this thread on topic, in your case i wouldnt make a shaft. I said that before as more of a joke. If your way too cheap like me and have a peice then it doesnt really matter that much. ;)

How thick is that PTO stuff? I had looked around before I built my square shaft, and all the PTO stuff I found was no thicker than .095, maybe .120 if you're lucky, so I went with the square...

Metto.. I got the square stuff from Raleigh Hitch, but it was $$$.. I think tractor supply and/or Nothern will have it far cheaper.

i looked at both TSC and northern and they didnt have anything long enough. also i was looking at their PTO stuff, but it wasnt thick enough. they did have some material with a solid square bar male part and a round female with a square insert, but they dont have yokes that work with truck stuff. apparently PTO stuff is all different yokes

What thickness did fleetpride use?

I dropped it off and said to use the thickest wall they could. He called back later and said stock is 0.083" and the best they could do was 0.095". Oh well. It is a marginal improvement. If this takes a dump, I figure I will call Jess at High Angle for the real beef. Fleetpride is a Spicer authorized driveshaft shop. Not sure if that is a big deal, but the welds are done on a machine that slowly turns the driveshaft like a hot dog on a rotisserie and they look great.

My PTO shaft is 1/4" and I HIGHLY doubt i will ever twist it. Already landed on it a few times and hasnt had a problem yet. This PTO is not from TSC but a steel place in Boone. Only goes in 1 way and doesnt have near the slop of a square shaft.

DK - if it makes ya feel any better, .095 is what High Angle uses standard.

Mac - that's awesome, and could really benefit several folks here, including Scott.. Can ya post up more specifics, like their contact info, price, etc?

Bring it over to my D/S shop in Greensboro and I will be glad to make you a 1/4 wall tubed D/S cheap...... :huggy:

i paid 240 to get mine legnthened and retubed from .08 to .12 and 2 new u joints. this was at triangle DS a while back
