Chippers…

This is a joke, right? A regular residential lawnmower probably has more power than a 9N. Are there LS swap kits for 9Ns?

I got this one for about $700 a few years ago from Rural King.
They don't list it on their site anymore. Not a single issue with it. Cranks every time, runs good, has split everything I've ever put in front of it, with the exception of a few knotted pieces that I couldn't get to stand still. It will slice through most knots. Only complaint is the retract detent on the handle doesn't alway lock in, but that may just be an adjustment.
I've been looking around at wood splitters all winter. They start at $1000 and go up to about $2500 these days.

We've got a splitter at the shop been in the weeds for at least 8 years, probably only needs a motor, tires, and new hydraulic lines.20220211_131947.jpg20220211_131938.jpg

I hadn’t found anything. Actually, I got frustrated and gave up looking; nearly decided to just get a PTO chipper so I save some $ and not have another engine to maintain.

But this past weekend I was reminded how much I needed a chipper. I tried to burn the pile I had and after a day of burning it doesn’t look much different and took me away from my other tasks while I made sure the rest of my land and trees didn’t go up in a blaze. And nearly landed myself in the hospital for being dumb with fire. So, my need for a chipper is somewhat renewed after this past weekend.

Man, I'll be honest...If burning a brush pile nearly landed you in the hospital, a chipper is probably not a good choice either!

Well, let’s just say gasoline plus wind plus 20% humidity plus a 4” water hose and pump and a half excavated mound of sand that is unstable doesn’t work well. Add in quite a bit of complacency (mostly stupidity) and I got what I got.

Did I ever tell you about the time I got blisters on my hands from trying to put out a small fire that kept jumping in the underground pine needles on a windy day in the midst of a burn ban in Pisgah with nothing but a rake and a 16oz cup shuttling water from a rain barrel 50 ft away?

This is exactly why I may have mentioned one on my purchase list when we spoke about the band mill. If I chip them I can find a use or maybe pawn them off. Burning although extremely satisfying consumes a lot of time. Unless your an old school grader. Light it with plenty of diesel and check it in the morning.

Too much risk anymore.

With the amount of diesel to burn this pile and the price of diesel today, I could buy a nice diesel powered chipper.

I guess it’s better than having 8 acres go up in a blaze as well as neighboring houses ranging from $750k and up. There were moments I actually considered calling the fire department. 🙄

Saw some sweet chippers today….

This is why I don't go to these kinds of shows, haha.

Saw some really cool equipment. Most of it was way too big for my needs but it’s certainly nice to see where the industry is going. There was some small equipment there but was just way too much $$$. I figured I might come across a show special chipper for some affordable $ but was disappointed. Cheapest 6” PTO chipper I found was $10k. It was super nice but we’ll behind what I was wanting to spend.
