Christmas vacation (not the movie)

When you find a job you completely fawking love, vacation doesnt seem the same. In my past life, i clock watched until vacation time. Feels dang weird i assure you.
Still have a week left, so im hunting some.

Used all my vacation time for the wedding and the first week of rifle season. Though, Im liable to get sick at any time...

the last 2 years are the only years in my entire working life that i have used all my vacation. normally would sell back 2 of the 3 weeks.

My company told me at Halloween we could only roll over 3 days, I immediately requested every Thursday Friday and a couple Wednesday’s off for the rest of the year....

The next day we had a new policy for this year. We’re a small company and I’m 100% sure I caused the new policy. Now we can roll all days and policy will change next year.

My Christmas Vacation starts Friday. I have a meeting at 9am to get my marching orders for the new office in WS and a meeting at 10am with HR to hand in all my badges and sign the papers or whatnot. Movers are packing up my household starting Monday and we’ll be leaving on the 26th to drive across the southern US (from AZ) in one of them there RVs. Gonna hit Orlando for New Years, then head north to the DC area before coming back down to Winston. I gotta report in for work on Jan 8. My in laws are gonna roll with us from AZ to Orlando then fly home. Should be an interesting trip! Speaking of LA, I think we’re going to stop for the night in the koa campground in Lafayette. I haven’t been to LA since I was a kid.

If your stopping in Lafayette make sure you hit up Richards Meat Market and get an batch of their bacon wrapped jalapeño stuffed chicken breast. Have a cooler cause they are raw for you to take home and cook. I’m drooling just writing this. And btw if you ask where it is it’s pronounce Rishard not Ri”ch”ard if that makes sense. For a good place to have dinner check out Crawfish Town USA it’s on I10 east of Lafayette in a town called Henderson.

Got 10 days left but can’t really use them.
If I take vacation, all my projects continue, customers still call and emails still come. Turning my phone off and trying to actually be off causes more anxiety so I can’t enjoy myself. A few days a year I will actually turn it off and do that but I struggle with it. The wife hates it.
I absolutely love my job though even with the stress.
It’s easier for me to do whatever it is I want to do and just be available to my customers in between. Therefore I rarely use a vacation day when on “vacation”.

The wife on the other hand, she’s off till Jan 4th.

Been home since the the week before thanksgiving, I have not done half the crap I wanted to do other than try to stop a leaky XJ gas tank 4 times now. Headed to Jekyll Island in the am.

Where's the tank leaking? That's a brand new tank. Fucking China!

can't get the sender to seal after I fixed it . I have a new ring and lock ring number five will be when I get back. Then time to weld in new floor boards

Taking the week between Christmas and New Years off to travel. My company has a pretty good PTO policy and you are allowed to carry over all of your time to next year up to 240hrs. I'm somewhere around 140hrs accrued right now. This isn't counting sick time either. Hardly ever take vacation/sick time but am fortunate to be able to leave early when needed as long as the my tasks are done.

This!
I am very thankful to love my career and the need for vacations is driven by my family, not a desire to shut down. And my work schedule is flexible enough that over the course of the year I don't use much of it, instead leverage existing Fed holidays and accumulated credit hour time.

My vacation started Thursday and goes to Jan 2, that's burning through most of my "use or lose" and donating the rest to coworkers that have recently had babies.
It's coming at a really bad time, as I have multiple projects I'm leading that are coming to a head, including the "finally we can play with this neat device we built" stage... next week... I'll probably end up swinging by work for a day just to see and "play".
I've learned over the years that really the best, most fun time to work at a Fed lab is around now b/c all the head honchos and boring stuck-in-the-mud folks are gone. So you can just work and do fun projects w/o the fear of getting taskers or unwanted email.

This year my vacation time will mostly be spent doing a bathroom renovation, working on the 4runner and (hopefully) making some progress on my basement project. No traveling.

I have 15 days of pretend time off to take by Feb 15th. I am off till jan 2nd now, and after that I still have 11 days to kill due to our shutdown/company holidays. I'll be working probably 1-2 hours a day though all next week.

That doesn't even count the 17 days I have banked from the previous PTO policy I will never lose and has to be paid out if I leave. I really need to take more vacations.

:driver: Too bad you aren't back for new years, looks like windrock for the weekend and I need a copilot! When you get settled i'll drive out that way and we will grab some food.
