CO2 On Board Air

I dont know the area.... but check out your welding shops, bar equipment, paintball shops, scuba shops, and home medical stores.

Im looking for the same in Jacksonville - someplace to fill my tank.

every gas and welding suply house.

national welders comes to mind as they have a few locations near you...

If you're in Wallburg - just outside of Winston Salem - there is a place called Machine and Welders supply off the East Busisness 40 - Lowery Street Exit. It's Just outside of winston, but before Walkertown. You do have to drop it off, but they have it ready in less than a week.

I put mine together pretty cheap. 10# aluminum tanks (I have one for the Jeep and one I keep in the truck) - $70 each, shipped. I got a fixed regulator from 4x4rockshop.com, "The Source" - I got it for around $40 shipped, looks like they're up to $46 shipped now. From there all you need is a way to strap it down, hose and tools.

I had a tough time with the welding supply places for filling the tanks. I had a place tell me they would not fill "a tank that small". Welder's supply wanted over $25 to fill. I take my tanks to the fire extinguisher place in Salisbury (I forget the name. It's on 29, south of Jake Alexander. Heading south it's on the left). They fill the tanks for under $15 a piece.

Go to Linde Gas on the I-40 & Sandy Ridge Exit. I fill mine up there for $14.

I built my co2 tank for about $130 or so.

- 10# tank from http://www.beveragefactory.com/draftbeer/tanks/co2/C10.shtml

- 150psi fixed regulator from The Source http://www.offroadairstore.com/servlet/Detail?no=11 Ask for the one with out the 45deg piece that comes out of the bottom. It will be cheaper! Call in your order and tell them that.

x2 for beverage tanks, also check out fire and safety locations that fill extinguishers. I go wherever is closest with gasoline being so high. But look for a place that fills while you wait, not "come back later."

I still have the oxygen tank that i was going to convert to co2 if anyone wants it. 40.00

search fire extinguisher in the yellow pages... most of the time they can fill onsite. $15 for a 10lbs tank. also I got on of those nice brackets for $29 (pic at bottom) went with a tank off ebay (i called the guy and had him ship 2 cost $120 for 2 10lbs tanks fresh paint and a new stamp for the cylinder, he they sold for about $75 with shipping so I did alittle better) got the $40 fixed regulator

so for $145 I got all I needed and a filled tank. and one for my brother also
here is the bracket i got for the extinguisher store

I WORK FOR MACHINE & WELDING (STATESVILLE LOCATION)
WE DON'T FILL ON SITE. IF YOU NEED IT FILLED ON SITE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER SERVICE CENTER SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO IT.
OUR GAS FILL PLANT IS AT THE LOCATION IN WINSTON. SO TURN AROUND WOULD BE QUICKER. LIKE MAYBE A DAY. PRICE ON
10# CO2 FILL AT LIST IS LIKE $13.00. IF YOU GO THE MACHINE & WELDING ROUTE TELL THEM MAT FROM STATESVILLE TOLD YOU $7.00. FOR THE REGULATOR I USE A NITROGEN PURGE REG.
WHICH IS OVERKILL BUT GIVE UP TO 500 PSI DEL. THE ONLY REAL CONCERN IF YOU ARE RUNNING AIR TOOLS IS YOU WOULD NEED AT LEAST 80 PSI DELIVERY TO HELP PREVENT FREEZE UP.

Roughly how much use/air can you get out of a 10# tank?
AKA, tire refills etc.

A lot

I have 2 10 lb ers on the blazer and it has been some time sense I filled them, many sets of 33" and 35" tires and some air tools. I do trailer so most of the time I do not air up if I'm not running on the road much. Also use it to bring the trailer tires and tow rig tires up.
I have been filling from a brew store off capital in raleigh and its on the spot for 12-15 if I remember.
Also have a 15 or 20? the big one out on loan to a friend and as I recall it has got him through many trips, and a few times of me letting the air out of his tires when the drinks or sleeps.
funny thing, he was so use to not having air it tears him up and I always get "what i'm I going to do now...." Maybe thats the beer???
Over time I found a few more free 5 lb ers and they are small for trail stuff but I keep them in the tow rig and one in the trailer with the fixed 150 psi Source that I got for a deal 4 for $110 shipped. I like them ok but the power tank adj reg is the best..
I can run spliters to all four tires and set the reg to 30psi then walk away, when it hits 30 they stop taking air and all are the same or .5 to 1 lb different.

I always fill an empty 20lbs. tank to take to Tellico. Last time I aired up 35-36 inch tires from 10-12lbs to 25-30lbs on 4 rigs TWICE, ran an air grinder to clean up driveshaft splines AND reseated a slipped bead. Once you buy the regulator you can get different size tanks for different trips/needs. I always use mine for MIG welding when the Unimix runs out too.

Hm, interesting. I was just looking into some kind of OBA option, was leaning toward a small compressor, like the infamous MF-1050 deals.... by $$, thi isa cheaper option, both up front and in the long run....however w/o a tank, air tools are out of the question.
I kina like this route better... no power needed, can use tools... plus I guess for welding etc having the tank around is helpful anyway, eh?

National welders goes up on gas everytime I go in there, but Reliable Fire and Safety has stayed about the same for two years. So I'm welding with that gas.

So it turns out I have a usable regulator/gauge already, was left as "trash" when my old lab was diassembled... I knew I grabbed it for a reason... of course this means its a *huge* medical grade deal.

Anyhow, what about the little 5lb tanks guys use for beer etc? Is this big enough to be useful? Smaller and cheaper...

5lbs. is good for one rig, I carry the big 20lbs tank for everybody else to use. We split responsiblities between tools, fluids, spares, and air.

That's what I carry, but it's only for re-seating a bead, and possibly running an impact wrench should the need arise. I don't air up after runs though, I'd imagine it would go quickly in that case.

It's nice and small, and mine is mounted just in front of the passenger's seat, very out of the way.

That said, what's the cheapest "good" hose that doesn't get brittle and crack to use? I thought I had one, but it blew up during the first use and shot cold co2 all over Nicole, which was kinda funny, but put an end to the power tool usage that day... :p

The one I use is from Sears. It wasn't the cheapest (I think around $25), but I figured it would hold up better than others and it has, so far. It's a small, black coiled (looks like a spring) hose, but it's a heavier rubber than the cheap yellow hoses you see everywhere.

I couldn't find it on Sears.com, but it looks similar to this only not the pretty blue color.
