Concealed carry in customers house?

So in my line of work I go into people's homes for mold inspections and evaluations. Most of the time people are very nice and grateful that I am there and want to help them. I enjoy that I get to meet new people and make their lives better.

Today I found myself in a very sketchy situation that made me very uncomfortable. My appointment was for 9am in Burlington. I arrived at 8:55 and the house did not match the description I had in my email. I called the customer and had to leave a VM explaining I wasn't sure if I was in the right place. Knocked on the door twice with no answer. I could hear people inside. I go back to the truck to try and call again, this time someone answers and hangs up immediately. Then a woman walks out and to her vehicle without ever looking over at me. I walked over and informed her that I had a 9am appointment with the name I had and she seemed extremely agitated and told me "she isn't here". I told her "well if you could let her know I arrived at 9 and if she'd like she can call and reschedule" she again told me she wasn't there. I'm heading back to the truck to leave and the woman says "you're leaving right?" I said yes and heard her mutter something as she walked back to the house. The lady had to beat on the door to get back in and I heard yelling from inside. This all happened at the back door as the driveway wrapped around to the back. I had walked to the front door originally to find a sign saying to use the back door.

Now I don't know what was going on in there, I don't really care cause its not my business. Maybe I just came at a horrible time. But that got me thinking, almost daily I go into strange people's homes with all kinds of people. Lots of times I'm lead into a dark basement to be shown where the issue is. I mentioned to my co-worker that I can't wait to get my CCP for days like today. He said he didn't think it was a good idea to carry in a customers home. Today I had a horrible gut feeling before the woman ever came out. I wanted to get out of there so bad, but I stayed to do my job. The way I see it, no will know I have a Kel-Tec 380 in my pocket unless something goes down, if something did I'd be glad I had it. My manager has already said he didn't care long as it stayed concealed and no other employees knew.

When I'm actually physically working the gun would stay in the truck.

What is your thoughts on this? Do you or would you carry? I expect my permit to come in any day now and I don't plan on leaving the house without my gun.

That's a very touchy subject, but I think as long as the boss is okay with it, I'd probably go ahead and do it...the peace of mind is well worth it. It's concealed, you're licensed to carry concealed, nobody knows you have it (which is the point). It's there for you! It's not like you're gonna go up in somebody's home to do work and then shoot the homeowner(s) and/or rob them. If that were your intentions, you would likely have some sort of history that the background check(s) would have caught, which would then have prevented you from obtaining the license in the first place. I say go for it.

i say go for it also, and don't get too caught up in "calibers" a BB gun trumps no gun..... just saying "you could shoot their eye out!!"

I carry all day every day & don't leave home without it... It's a crazy world we live in now. If you get your CCW permit I'd carry because you never know. Know your right's & know the law !!! NOTHING smaller than a 9mm is my recomendation

Yeah I'm gonna be carrying regardless of what my co-worker thinks, just might save his skin one day. I have always been the Andy Griffith type, don't want or need a gun kinda guy. But we don't live in laid back Mayberry anymore. This world has went to crap, I haven't felt uncomfortable like I did today in a long time.

I chose a 380 cause its compact and still packs a punch. I really liked the feel. I'm sure I could ask 20 people what's best and get 20 different opinions lol. But I will consider a 357 later, just like a 380 as my first pistol.

All the above. Make sure your company is cool with it first and foremost. I know my company is not but it is risk I'm willing to take. We don't go into homes but in our line of business I always travel with one anyway.:driver:With that said I'm all about being able to protect myself and loved ones so I would make sure that if you carry it is totally concealed. For instance if you are carrying in the small of your back and you bend over and your shirt rides up you are no longer concealed and that may catch people off guard or if you get a crappy IWB holster that prints or does not retain the weapon properly you could surprise nome nice old lady. lol I know a guy that has had his weapon fall out of his pants in public so don't laugh. No it wasn't me.

1st, concealed means concealed....NOBODY needs to know

the only person who should ever know you are carrying is you. I also agree on not getting hung up on caliber. Anything is better than nothing in a life or death situation. As for carrying in my pocket, even with a pocket holster I personally wouldn't. Get a tuckable IWB. It allows you to carry on your side even if you have to tuck your shirt in. All you see are two clips on your belt.

I like that, I wear khaki pants and tuck in my shirt so I'd ruled carrying in the waste out. I was planning on the in pocket wallet style holster.

if you go to the gun show there are some guy's selling holster's that pull up from what look's like an ordinary phone case & fit almost any caliber. GREAT for Khaki's

Depending on how important your job is to you, I would get more than your supervisors word that he doesn't care. If just by chance the wrong customer gets a glimpse of your sidearm and decides to raise cane at work, you could loose you job. If that thought bothers you, find in writing the policy that allows it. If that doesn't bother you, screw it, carry!

i carry all day everyday & say screw work there not with me to protect me so i will protect my self
i carry 2 everyday a 22 mag in my pocket & a XDS 45 IWB & NEVER go any wear without them
the only time i take the XDS 45 off of me & when i am working on or under a piece of equipment that i am working on
just my .02

They make others that use a "C" clip that goes behind the belt so you see even less. If you want an OWB get a Sneaky Pete. It's the one that looks like a phone case. Should be real small for that KelTec... but IMHO they are still to big and kinda obvious.... Just google tuckable IWB and you'll see all kinds of them...

I daily carry a KelTec .380. I will try to get a picture of my holster. IIRC, it was a cheap $15 nylon holster (Uncle Mikes IIRC) that I had the nylon web thumb break sewn on so the weapon cant fall out. The clip of the holster goes between my pants and belt. NOBODY can see that I am carrying unless I pull my shirt up. It dosnet matter what I do, my weapon or holster will not fall off my body. I can do jumping jacks, cartwheels, whatever and it stays where I put it (i tried all of that just to see how it would hold on).

As far as the carry at work, try to get it in writing from your supervisor in case SHTF. As far as carrying in somebody's house, unless they tell you not to or it is posted on every door, it is open. Personal property is personal property - business, home, restaurant, etc.

I do mold inspections as well. Before I had a concealed permit and before I kept a handgun in my truck always I had an appointment to inspect a home. When I arrived the neighborhood wasn't great. Looking around I noticed the neighbors on their porches and the overgrown yard. I felt uncomfortable and by the time I got to the front door I was ready to go ,I knocked once, counted to three quickly, and walked quickly to my truck. By the time I got to the end of the block my phone was ringing. I explained and apologized. I felt uncomfortable, not safe, and wasn't returning. Reflecting back I never regretted my decision. Today I have my permit and at least keep a handgun in my truck. I will carry when I'm concerned about my safety. I'm still not going to put my self in a place or situation where I might be in harm just because I have a handgun. I strive to avoid bad situations and high risk situations. My handgun is a last resort I never want to have to use. I do not carry into customer's homes but my handgun is as close as a flashlight, moisture meter or camera.

I doubt I'd have any issues from work. If they let me go I wouldn't care much, be just what I need to pull the trigger on starting my own business. Been thinking and praying hard on it anyway.

If some whacko takes me out they just loose a good employee which is replaceable. My family looses me for good. My fiancé can't take care of my dog as good as me, I can't have that. Gotta stick around for the guy.

Even worse, some whacko could have me in some basement some where going all Pulp Fiction on me. Can't have that either!

So if your in the same line of work your probably familiar with the angry tenant vs landlord situations too. I've been present in some very heated arguments between the two and decided I would leave and contact the property owner later. One guy said to me "you're not going anywhere till I get some answers from somebody" I left anyway but that's a bad situation too with some of the slummy government housing places I deal with.

Just something to think about...I don't know how nc concealed carry is about this but in sc where I got my license, by "law" you could not carry into someones residence without their consent. That was in the rule book 6 yrs ago. Again would that keep you from protecting yourself.. probably not.

He does bring up a good point.

It is a good point. But I would hope that if I found myself in a situation to draw my weapon it would be understood by a judge. I'm willing to take my chances. I been looking at the holsters mentioned above and will be getting one for sure.

Taurus tcp .380 on the ankle all day every day. Only issue I ever had was coming down off a ladder and smacked the magazine base on something and broke the plastic. Spring and bullets fell out my pant leg but gun stayed put.

look at the N82 holsters i wear mine 10 to 12 hrs a day & i can not tell it is there
get a good holster b/c if the gun is uncomfortable to carry you will not carry it
& ankle holsters suck takes to long to get to your gun if you need it fast & is real hard to get to you gun when you are driving JUST MY .02

Same law applies in NC.
Fine line, but the law.
