craigslist...BS

Yeah CarMax tried to screw me,I had a mustang with 56k that I bought from the original owner who I was with the day they bought the car new.Went to carmax to sell it,they offered me 2300 bucks and tried to tell me the car had been totalled and had been on frame machine.Sold the car for 7500 the next week and never have or will deal with carmax
some cars do get damaged BEFORE they get sold as new.
when i worked at carmax, i saw several people get really pissed because the car they'd had since new had obvious signs of paint work.

I don't know if that is your situation, but it happens alot more than you'd expect

When I was trying to sell my SASd 89 pickup on CL, I had somebody try to lowball me because the KBB price was 1k lower. I told her that if she could find a solid axle 89 pickup for that price, she better buy it. I clearly had "offroad" and "highly modified" in my add.

Carmax sucks. That's all I can legally say about them. Seriously.

I had my 74 AMX for sale on Craigslist and had all kinds of stupid emails. I had in the add $3000 FIRM, no trades. For an AMX with a built 401 and 4-spd (not original) that is a smoking deal.

"will you trade for a bass boat?"
"trade for an 89 non turbo Supra that needs paint?"
"Is this an Austrailian car?"

And the best was the guy who called me and talked for like 30 minutes, telling me his life story about the AMX he had in high school. Then he says "I have this collector car price guide here" and I immediately knew what was coming. He says "it says here that car is only worth $1200." I tell him that a rusty 304/auto AMX that hasn't had any work done to it might be worth that, but this one has a built 401 and a nice 4-spd, along with a brand new set of Weld Draglites and BFG Radial T/As. The guy had the balls to say "well, I'm not giving you more than $1200 for the car." I said "how about I sell you the crankshaft for $1200 and I keep the rest of the car?" He hung up on me.

When I finally sold it this hispanic guy and his dad drove down from Jersey and looked at it. Dad didn't speak a lick of English and his son had to translate for him. They hemmed and hawed over it, thought they were going to leave. I told them they can take it for a drive if they wanted, but they said they'd ride with me if I drove it. We all piled in and I pulled out of the neighborhood and dumped the clutch, burned down the 295 rear tires about 100ft down the road. I beat the snot out of it, powershifting, barking the tires, hauling major ass. They were holding on for dear life.

I pulled into the driveway and the guy says "can we give you $2000 now and the other $1k when we come to pick it up?"

Didn't hear from him for weeks, then he randomly showed up one Sunday morning at like 7:30am. Weird.

SOOOOO true... i worked a body shop when the Caddy CTS 1st came out and the transport driver backed into something and messed up the rear 1/4 and bumper and the dealer brought it to use we fixed it looked like brand new they took it and sold it as a brand new car.... seamed kinda scketch but w/e.. we replace bumpers, finders, hood, and anything else that was messed up on the dealer lot or during transport and they would always sell it and treat it like nothing ever happend.

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS look over a car when you buy it.. NEW or used!!!!

I think I have you all beat :lol:

I think that guy really wants your truck! lol.

Had 2 guys come look at my truck yesterday, both were very interested, one offered cash, one offered a trade + cash, I was more interested in the trade plus cash. I talked to the guy for about an hour, all seemed in order, and for the last 24 hours we have discussed things and had fine tuned our agreement, I tell him sure, we can meet late (8-9 pm) but be sure to have the title notarized prior to coming out otherwise it will make things very complicated. At 7 he calls, says he is about to head my way and the title is ready.
Texts me 5 minutes ago saying "The title is at my bank and I cant get it out until 2moro, can we maybe do this saturday instead?" I think to myself, how the hell did the title get notarized if its at your bank? Turns out hes only 18, kid looked older than me lol, his sister apparently was supposed to pick up the title for him, and forgot. Understandable, but why bullshit me?
Seriously thought I had been scammed and turned down a cash offer for nothing, laughing to myself now, but was severely pissed only moments ago

Banks have notarys on-site. I often make use of them. He was likely telling the truth. :)

You talking about mine?

It gets better!

I was swearing up and down this was a joke, right?

So, I call his bluff and ask for a pic of the beany babies.

I had one once where I was selling my 87 Bronco. I was asking 2k for it, it had one place where there was a large chipped area on the hood, but beyond that was very nice for a 20 year old vehicle. Well I had the typical low ballers, the knit-pickers, the know-it-alls, etc. I eventually got got down to challenging them to find a cleaner more mechanically sound 20+ year old vehicle for under $2000.

Finally, I had a guy willing to bite. The guy said he'd pay the 2k cash, I said great, but my father had the title 5 hours away, and I was in the process of moving back home a day later. So my dad comes up the next day with the title to meet with the guy at the designated time. The guy doesn't show, we can't get in contact until later that afternoon and he says he had an allergic reaction to something and asked if we could meet later that night, we agree. So we do eventually get together, but he's only got 1000 on him. He said that's all he was going to pay, we disagreed. So we negotiated down to 1750 and he said he'd be back the next day with the rest of the money.

Now my dad was my ride back home if the Bronco sold, and now the 'next day' was a work day...so now dad was missing work because of this guy. So it comes to meeting time, the guy is a no show, but we have 1000 of his money so we cut him some slack. He calls us two hours later, says he'll be there. When he gets there, he doesn't have anymore money...so we said no deal, my dad 'convinced' the guy to let him keep $500 of $1000 because my dad not only wasted gas money and 10 hours driving round trip but also lost a days wages...and then we drove home. and that is the one and only fustercluck of a situation I've had with CL.

cl scam

well when i was on my search for a jeep cherokee to off road with i found one in statesville. yaada yada yada he says $3500 and i drive an hour with my dad to go check it out and take it for a spin. i was ready to hand over the cash as soon as we park it back in his driveway after the test drive. so my dad and i talk and i tell my dad its a winner and lets drive her home.....the kid selling it was a senior in high school so under his mom's name in the title he drags her out to get it all done and we say $3400 cash right now. she has a goofy look on her face like my dad and i are idiots. she tells us no way jose, i'm not letting that jeep go for under $4200. i tell this "mom" your son listed it as $3500. (we went $100 lower because paint was chiping and the window wipers didnt work) she starts going off, with the lift kit, tires, and stereo, there is no way i will even considere $3400......i react to the "mom" listen your lift kit is a $90 budget boost, tires rub the f**k out of the fenders and the subs are not connected to an amplifier.

after that my dad and i walked away with our cash. What a PITA, later my grandfather mentions we could have legally made them sell it to us for the son's listed price because there is a law called "baiting & selling"? where you list an item low then they try and hustle you for more when you arrive.

oh well....this got me so mad i just wanted to go back there with my jeep and put some TLSs on and ripp the hell out of their property :wheel:

is this baiting and selling law true?

He didn't just give it to us for no reason, they were reparations. We had an agreement, he handed over the cash he had on hand and he failed to come through with the rest of the money on his end of the agreement. We categorized it as a non-refundable deposit. It certainly wasn't right that we had to eat the cost of gas ($150) and a days pay ($300) because some blowhard couldn't follow through on what he said he was going to do.

Heres one of my strange experiences lol btw this was all over email

It's a scam, because he's going to send you a worthless check or money order, and you are going to deposit it in your bank account and it's going to bounce. Then you will have the bounced check penalties, and if you've already shipped the goods, you're doubly screwed.

And if he was with the FBI, he wouldn't have told you.

i was trying to sell a xbox on there one time and i got a email about 3 days later. this email said i would like to buy your xbox for 100 dollars more than what you are asking because i want it now and i need it shipped to africa. i was all for it at first and then after i got another email that said they sent the money but pay pal how a new way of doing stuff and my money wouldnt show up till i sent the buyer a tracking number and they approved. for some reason that sounded a little fishy to me so i got scared and backed out. i sent them a email saying ive herd alot about frauds on cl and i said im not saying you are one but this deal just seems to good to be true so i decided not to sell it and they got a little pissy that they didnt get me and said not everyone out there is out to get someone but i think they where trying to get a free xbox but they didnt get one from this ol boy
