Cut the cord, now the options.

If you’re in one of their markets you can get YouTube TV. Similar to the Sling package with a bunch of cable channels but also includes local channels if you don’t want to do an antenna, cloud based DVR (unlimited space) will hold your shows for 9 months, and up to 3 people can be logged in at the same time so you can have multiple TVs using the service at the same time in your house.

Ok, bit of of a thread resurrection but I gotta let you guys and gals know about Philo. I just dumped SlingTV, which ain't bad at all in terms of channels etc at much lower cost, but the Go$ Damn MF Asshat commercials were driving me crazy.

Philo? Just hit fast forward baby! At about half the cost of SlingTV. Forget sports as that's how they get the cost down but other options for that.

I should probably throw our Fire Sticks away. We've switched to Roku and/or the in-built Sony smart tv shit on everything since Amazon dumped Google and Youtube.

Netflix(14)
SlingTV(20)
Crackle(Free)
VuDu(Paid&Free) download the app on your phone and you can scan older movies bar-codes and buy them for $2. Turn the $5-$10 bins at walmart into the $2 bin.
Antenna(30+ channels)

I tried spectrum TV streaming but it just buffers all the time during prime hours, they claim it is a issue with the internet running slow and apologize, I tell them it's not the internet as nothing else buffers even watching 4K movies on VuDu and they act surprised, spectrum TV servers are junk and they don't want to pay to upgrade them, and if you are not home you cannot watch it, it is linked to your home internet signal. They also will charge you $7 for local channels, non optional, you get charged for free channels.

thanks for the info...recently moved from DirectTV Now to Hulu Live, wasn't impressed with SlingTV customer service and trying to reduce the $39/mo Hulu costs

I can't even use sling on most everything in the house. Sling has no browser-based functionality, and zero software for Chrome OS devices, so exactly one out of our 6 laptop/TV computers can get Sling. Fuck Sling.

I went a few years without tv and really have no need for it. 90% of it is crap. My wife on the other hand, loves tv. All sorts of nonsense. So, we have sling tv with 2 added packages. still only $50/month and I must admit, the outdoor stuff and the racing is nice. So are the ideas she gets from the cooking shows. Oh, and we have DVR. We pay $30/month for basic internet.

Its still on. You just have to access with a different app now

And says they have UNLIMITED "saving" too?
I like the sound of this, since we're moving to south central VA and broadcast (OTA) signals appears pretty weak (though I have a banging antenna that prove different)...

Nope. They've removed the YouTube app and all the Chromecast functionality from the fire stick. Watching YouTube from the fucking silk browser isn't a workaround.

Should have mentioned that I'm using Philo on a Roku stick I got for free when I signed up for SlingTV.
We opted to get the roku express box.

I just switched to DirecTV Now from sling, why did you leave DirecTV to go to Hulu Live? Although Philo looks promising....

Well, it looks like only certain shows, not even entire channels, allow fast-forward. Some just make you watch the ads, others - jeez, make you watch 4:00 minute long ad strings - like for every 4:00 min. of show.

I think it may be time to just find another way to settle down at night, maybe read a book, drink large quantities of Bourbon, crawl thru the bushes wearing camo face paint looking for all the little shits that keep breaking into cars and houses around here... much more entertaining than these damn ads and loss leader shows that aren't worth watching anyway and drag you on for months waiting to see what happens. /rant

Motor Trend On Demand has been adding a ton of automotive cable shows to their lineup. A lot of it is that reality crap that's on, but some is good (like Chasing Classic Cars), and it looks like today they started adding the shows that are (or were?) on Spike on weekend mornings. Plus their exclusive shows and the motor sports they stream. Not bad for $5/month.

So, seeing as I started this thread, I thought I’d give an update.

Our old TV pretty much bit the dust, so I bought a 55” Sony Bravia Smart TV. After figuring out that it’s a computer and not a TV as I knew TVs, and learning how to work it, it’s kinda cool.

As for service, we have Netflix, Amazon, and Sling that we pay for. Tried Hulu and ditched it. Will probably ditch Amazon after I get caught up on Grand Tour. Then renew when the next season comes out.

I’ll have to look into Philo, I don’t give a shit about sports. I just want History Channel and the wife wants Hallmark.

We also bought a cheap $50 digital antenna, but it’s limited. May splurge and get something bigger, she’d also like a good reception on CBS.

Other than that, we’re happy.

It's funny seeing this thread, as I guess I haven't had any type of cable or satellite in over 15 years.
Easy way to replace cable is buy or build an entertainment pc. I would recommend linux, and install xbmc . With only a few plug ins on it you can watch any show or movie ever made, including movies still in theaters.
Raspberry pi is the cheapest rout to do this .

You can put XBMC on a $35 Roku stick. I installed it on the TV in the living room, too.

Seems like all these options require an internet connection. It appears the only thing available for my area is Spectrum which wants $69 for an internet only connection. Is anyone aware of any other options for internet?

If you don't already have internet at the house, it's going to be tough to save money by dropping cable. A lot of the folks in this thread are paying for cable TV and internet and maybe home telephone, and are dropping TV and phone for alternatives that only require an internet connection.

X2. There are other options for internet, but most of them suck in the bandwidth category. If you have AT&T lightgig/uverse in your area, it's worth a look.

We currently have SlingTV which is nice, but I would suggest some pretty fast internet. Don't know if its the area we are in, but I have noticed, If were are watching Sling and I am on my laptop and my wife is on her phone, it will almost always freeze up and just gets pretty frustrating. Doesn't happen all the time, but more often than it should. We also have Netflix. We have a Roku express that we actually got for free by signing up for Sling and an Amazon firestick for the upstairs bedroom and the Roku is much faster and easier to use.
Sling seems to work for us for now. I can't see us using this setup forever, but until something else comes out that suits us better, this is how it will be.

Check your wifi. If you're using 2.4 GHz and there isn't a wifi access point within ~20ft of the TV, you're probably sucking up all of the wifi bandwidth. We moved some things to 5GHz and that fixed the problems while streaming.
