Debating this while camping and I thought I would get some info from people who have had a D35 bust on you, We were debating what the major down fall was or breaking point so to speak was for the axle.

Mine was the locker. But I believe it has a ton to do them gear ratio as well as tires.

I am really just interested to see what other peoples experiences are, just because I am curious.

We have D35 in our group that is wheeled to hell and back on 33s with 3.07s open, and I am saying thats what is saving him. I believe he is at his max on it. I know other people have other opinions about the axle, if so post it up. Like I said this is just a friendly poll to see whats happen to your turdy five.

If I have offended you because your a sole believer in the great Dana 35 axle. I would like to state that I am sorry :D

My turdy5 is welded with 34 ltbs its all to hell about to be swaped out its lasted about a year after breaking spiders in mtn city the turdy gave out a long long time ago!!!

I'm running 33" tsl's and 3.07 gears. My Jeep struggles just to move LOL but I think alot of my axle's savior has been my A/T.

My friend is running 35 baja claws on an open d35 in a 4cyl tj. Still kicking. He is friends with the skinny pedal. It has never broken. But I am certain if he locked it, the d35 would be trash

I hope talking about it doesnt bring out the curse...
I welded the 35 in my ECORs racerig and have beat it thru 4 races now. I assume the ratio is 3.54, but never bothered to count teeth. Auto transmission, NP231, standard XJ stuff. Now, off to load it up for Harlan Saturday.

buddy has a 94 XJ 5 speed, with 33" Boggers and 4.56 gears with lockers. he broke the drivers side axle shaft, knuckle and ball joint all at the same time while spinning on a rock and sliding into another where it caused it to stop spinning instantly. got it on video, ill try to get it on here.

id say 33s and a limited slip is putting the axle in the red zone, but some people have better luck. its all in how you drive though.

broke mine in Tellico with 33's and 3.07's on guardrail. Destroyed carrier not shafts. Ended up JB welding the C clips on to get off the trail... Long ride back to the cabins. Bent cross shaft like an untwisted paper clip

3.07/31's/open, broke the left axleshaft
3.07/32's/lockrite, broke the lockrite crosspin
4.56/32's/open, tore up the spiders
4.56/33's/ARB, busted the ARB case in half
4.56/33's/open, tore up more spiders
4.56/33's/open, took out a couple teeth in the ring gear

Put in a D60FF, and haven't had any problems.

Great thread by the way!

Haven't broken yet and I beat the crap out of it (plenty of crawling with a few throttle outs, lots of second gear hard throttle drops on the road)

3.73s
35" bfg mt
open carrier
Upgraded to yukon shafts b/c I was getting nervous.

Putting in a 14b soon though.

3.07 33m/t open broke 2 shafts spiders and twisted an axle tube

I tore up all the spider gears in my 35 just backing out of my driveway one day! I was open, with 3.55s and 30" tires

88 yj, 232 I6, ax-15, non c-clip d35, 3.55, aussie locker, 33's. Have wheeled this piss outta it for the last year and never snapped and axle or anything. I do to to stick to mud and its not uncommon for me to turn the tires 20-30mph in a hole. The locked d30 in the front is a whole nother story, lost count of how many short shaft's i've gone threw.

First time I broke the thirty-5 was in the Crawford rock garden with a 4 popper running on 3 pops. Lock right, 4.10's and 33's and a sudden contact with a rock while spinning snap the shaft like a twig. Second was a spun housing that tore sevaral DS out. :)

Thanks this is the info that I think will help.

3.73/detroit/33x10.50. I broke the driver's side shaft at Uwharrie and broke another driver's shaft on the road too.

3.73/open/33x12.50. I broke the spiders and carrier at Uwharrie night wheeling.

Both times I was wheeling I was using too much skinny pedal and bounced it a couple times. The on road breakage was a 90 degree left turn in first gear. I did wheel it for a few years before the first breakage.

Now I run an 8.8. I haven't had much trouble with it other than lunchbox lockers don't seem to work right in it. I'm gonna put a detroit in it and call it good.

Some of the lunchbox lockers need to be beveled to hook well.

32"s and 3.07 open. I broke one spider gear into 2 pieces, and the second into fragments at Tellico...

used to run 3.55 and 33's in highschool, never had an issue, bought a set of 35's one day for a deal, tore the axle out a week later. Haven't run a stock axle on bigger than 33's since and havent had any problems.

beat the tar out of mine wen I had it. 3.73 locked 33's. I just never bounced it. Everyone that I have seen broken was when it started to bounce.

My dana 35 survived two years with 4:56, chromolys, and 33's with an Ected locker. Went up to 35's, the center pin in the spider gears shattered on a good hard attempt at Kodak rock. Went Ford 8.8, 4:56,chromolys and ARB, with 35s, no problems.

D35 on 38s

I was planning on maybe going with the 30/35 setup w 4:88 loced in the rear , running 38s -maybe not now
great post lot of good info , would I be better off w f350 axles?
Thanks
