Daughter got bit by a dog

Couldn't believe how fast this happened. It happened this past Thursday afternoon to my 15 year old daughter. I had taken her over to a friends house to return some photos she had borrowed. I pulled into the driveway, she opened the door and stepped out. As she handed the photos to the boy, I see this big brown dog come out of nowhere. It lunged at her and bit her on her left hip. As it bit, she kind of jumped back and the boy grabbed the dog. She jumped back in the truck and I was freakin' out. The kid knew I was pissed by the look on his face as he was dragging the dog away. My daughter was white as a ghost and she started to cry. I told her to check herself to see if she was OK. When I looked, she had two pretty wide and deep scratch marks and a puncture right below them. There is a minor emergency place a couple of miles from our house, so I ran her by there. They cleaned the wounds and patched her up. They then had us fill out a couple of forms, and called the dogs owner and animal control. They are supposed to go and get the dog for a 10 day quarantine. The owner swore up and down that the dog is current on its shots. I guess we will see. I'm just glad that the kid was there to grab the dog, as this could have really been bad. That dog could have tore her up good before I could have gotten out of my truck to get around to her. Would have been one dead dog then. I don't care much for a mean aggressive dog anyway.

Follow up, file charges, and insist the animal is destroyed, after the Quarantined period is over

...Im not quite as quick on the destroy the dog trigger....but yeah Damn thats rough.

What kind of dog was it?

I have zero tolerance for an aggressive animal. I once destroyed my own dog due to aggressive behavior. (bit a friends daughter)

That's the one thing I'm kinda hesitant on. But then I would hate to think it could happen again because I didn't push the issue. From what my daughter told me it is some kind of boxer/pitbull mix.

once a dog bites once, they never stop...unless they really keep this dog from people....only one thing to do

We dont know anywhere near enough details to say what provoked the bite...

If the dog thought (even mistakenly) that its owner was in danger its instinct is to protect....something as simple as the way she passed the photos could have scared or startled the dog.

All that said IT HAS BEEN MY EXPERIENCE that Boxers as a whole are prone to attitude problems....and certaily we have had the pit debate before...

I'm normally hesitant to push for euthatnization, but an agressive dog will be an agressive dog without more work than 99.9% of america is willing to put into a dog, especially one that wasn't apparently trained/socialized properly to begin with. I agree completely on the "destroy the owner" comment above as well, bad breeding can lead to an agressive dog, but the most common problem is piss poor ownership/training.

Glad to hear the outcome of it was no worse than waht she ended up with, hopefully it won't leave her afraid of dogs in general.

Take note, We tell everyone. If My dog is in the yard.. she is on guard duty. If she is out of the yard she is a cuddle bug.

but if that happend to pixie, you will not have to worry about quartined....

That's complete BS. Nearly any dog can be trained.

Answer here isn't to put the dog down. The owner, maybe. ;)

But this is a dog OWNER problem....it ain't the dog.

It's a damn shame that people are so quick to put dogs down and just get another one.

yea yea...how many times do you hear people say...oh Fido has never done that before he is so sweet...Fact-dog bite once, dog bite twice...I hope not my 6yr old.I have put one boxer (Scooter)down for this reason 5yrs ago...I know

I had to put my beloved St. Bernard down due to unprovoked aggression issues. As much as I loved her, there was no comparison as to what was more valuable - a dog or a person. I just couldnt have the risk of a 140 lb dog that had a history of biting for no reason. Luckily we have good neighbors that understood the situation, and nobody was more than nipped, but it could have been much worse if we weren't there to grab her.
We had gotten her from the pound, apparently her previous excuse for an owner ruined her temperament for anyone except her immediate family.
The only other dog I have ever had put down was dying of cancer - I certainly do not just kill a dog because they misbehaved once or twice. The Saint is the only dog I have ever had that was uncontrollably aggressive. (When we got her, she was terribly sick and submissive, the healthier she got, the more aggressive she got - never again will I try to nurse a dog back to health without knowing beforehand)

^^We have raised deer hunting dogs, boxers, pits, rotts, never Doberman. I know owners make The only difference. I know lets take all these dogs with bad owners and let you guys have them to protect from the bad people

I have to agree with this statement except I would add the word humanely before destroyed.
sounds like a irresponsible pet owner to me. it's sad, but true people don't take care of their animals.

one of our neighbors has a dog that charges me, my wife and dogs when we walk up the road in our neighbor hood. she gets all pissed cause we asked her to keep her dog put up. if the he/she attacks us it's over for that dos. stoopid pet owners make me RRRRRRAAARRRRR....

I hope your daughter recovers well and doesn't hate all dogs because of that...

Man that really sucks.

Damn Webb, that's A horrible thing to happen to A little girl, or boy for that matter. Hope she's gonna be O.K. Have to agree with the humane put down though. I've heard the " It's not the breed argument" before, but having lived in Philadelphia, Pa. for A long time, Pitbull's are gonna bite people. It doesn't matter where you live. Philly has A high concentration of them, so there are A. high number of bites in the city. There was three right on my street, in2005 alone. Good luck with this matter.

I have three pits, that are properly trained/socialized with unfamiliar people. Unless you bite them first, they aren't at all likely to bite you, or anyone for that matter. If you belive that the breed is the problem, you are ill informed, plain and simple. Go to www.pbrc.com and do a little research on the breed before you condemn a wonderful dog. I don't doubt a high concentration of pits in Philly, but what kind of people are owning/training those dogs? Also, the dog is "thought to be a boxer/pitbull mix", I;m not trying to thread jack, or detract from the fact that what happened is both horrible, and preventable through responsible dog ownership, but it aggrivates me when the "all pits are evil its their fault even though this may not have been a pit" bs starts flying.

It truly sucks what happened, the dog is apprently agressive, and I agree it should be put down if it attack with no real provocation. The owner(s) should be punished as well, there is no excuse when it comes to having a dog that bites. Hopefully the legal system will come through on this one.

Have nothing but friendly dogs, Unless you are doing something you shouldnt.. They Bark when someone pulls up. Its a Automatic doorbell.

It's not a fact by any definition of the word.

Good post. My family has bred and shown dogs my entire life, and i have had prolly 300 puppies go through my household one way or another through the years. Its all about how your dog is treated and trained not what kind. i have seen some seriously evil dogs of all breeds fru fru dogs to mastiffs. And if everyone thinks pits have the worst reputation of all breeds, research a fila brasileiro, in show rings the judges aren't even allowed to touch them due to there instincts.

man its all about the person.
The state of SC told me I had to put my beloved Rocky to sleep all because he scratched a van and tried to eat a 15 year old.

They didnt care that the 15 yo shot him 3 times with a BB gun first.

Well turns out the AC officer in this lil po dunk town graduated HS with me....oooops records are wrong.

My girl lives with a good friend in Maine 3 years after she was euthanized by the state ;)

SkyHiK5, I;m glad you got around it in that situation, a provoked dog will attack when pushed to its edge no matter what breed, no matter how good they normally are. If the punk shot me with the BB gun I'd want to kick his ass too.

Had Rocky done it for no apparent reason(as the dog in question here did), I would feel waayy differently about the situation.
