Sounds Good.I have worked with my hands my whole life,I have a strong back and definitely am not so proud that I can't do grunt work.I look forward to meeting everyone.

retrodaddy, they'll definitely need your J4000 the 18th because I won't be able to make it that day with mine.

I stay out of alot of the threads with tension because well, I find enough elsewhere in life.

That said, I am in a unique position to chime in. I know all the CFSJC guys and I know at least one other person in the thread because I sold retroedaddy some parts and had a chance to meet him in person and can attest to the fact that he is in fact not a jerk.

I think that there is alot of miscommunication because typing just isn't the most accurate means of expressing emotion or sentiment. From what I gather we're all in agreement that the trails need continued attention. We all suffer from the negative attention that Tellico received when a particular group began to focus on that area. None of us wants to give anyone any reason to fuss over Uwharrie.

I am reading some reasonable suggestions and look forward to in-person discussion to determine how to improve the workday experience. Yes, the FS is in charge but they are open to suggestion and are not likely to turn down well coordinated suggestions for improvement.

So when we all meet at the work days let's figure out how we can capitalize on the interest, tools, and grunt workers that are available. For those of you that aren't in CFSJC you're welcome to make fun of me as the meeting facilitator but I'll happily get my paperplate notepad out and help us figure out how to better the trails. (a fairly self explanatory inside joke)

Crap, I think I just committed myself to be there for a workday. Maybe I can get Retroedaddy to pay me for the transmission I dropped off. :)

So, to echo the previous request, please continue to share suggestions for how we can collectively improve our support to the FS trail maintenance at Uwharrie.

I'm torn between signing this post
"with much love, Will"
and
"Kiss off beeyatches, Will"

At least I'm laughing at myself. I need sleep.

Also remember the adopted trail groups can't always make it to every work day. What we are doing here on NC4X4 is actually rare going to every work day. And work days are once a month. So it very well could have been that the trees fell etc between the work days.

FYI, the FS has told us that we can work our adopted trail outside of their scheduled work days. Which we do on occasion. If we have a group headed to the forest we'll check to see which tasks the rangers want us to accomplish.

We welcome anyone that wishes to lend a helping hand on those days.

Maybe I should have been a little more specific. OFFICIAL work days are only once a month. Any other day you show up you can do an "unofficial work day" by either getting in contact with Terry or just stopping in at Janet's and signing in before heading out. You don't even have to be in a group, could just be a day you get bored and head out there.

Eli, we have done this at least once a year for the last several years....Mainly on the Sunday after our annual event we hold in June called the East Coast Invasion for FSJs.

Yeah, you guys have quite a collection of pictures from your past work days. Was just clarifying for people not familiar with the work days.

So you are saying CFSJC specific workdays are not "official" even when Pete/Rodney from the FS show up and bring supplies/equipment? (ie: 3/27/10)

Are workdays only "official" if you/NC4X4 participate?

I posted up something, then Casey posted up an FYI or an elaboration on what I said. So I posted my own clarification to go with it, but some how it wasn't taken that way by sungoesdown so I clarified on it again.

So I will clarify once more. My personal definition of official work days are the ones set up by the Forest Service every month for EVERYONE and ANYONE to attend. That includes the March work day, it was one of the monthly work days organized by the Forest Service. We were out there on Falls Dam (Terry Savery rode with our group) with a Bobcat installing guard railing on that work day:

If you don't agree with my definition, there isn't much I can say. Its my own personal opinion. When I went to Uwharrie March 19th and did Trail Inventory with Terry Savery on Falls Dam I didn't call that an official work day. Or any other random day/weekend myself or anyone in our group signs in with Janet and picks up supplies etc to put up diamonds, pick up trash etc.

I haven't questioned your group's volunteering history or status or what ever you want to call it. We are in an open public forum here, so people not always familiar with the work days do read these threads. I was simply clarifying myself for those that aren't aware. If you read back at the beginning of this thread I actually was sticking up for your group.

There is no need to get all defensive about this. We are all on the same side here, its not a competition or anything of the sort. I understand there was some disagreements in this thread about other things, so some people a little bit on edge in this thread. But this isn't apart of that.

Not to try and sprinkle happiness among the group but I am continuing to hear a theme from everyone that we are on the same page about one thing which is working to support the FS and Uwharrie. There seems to be continued miscommunication through typed messages because it is easy to not convey our full intention/attitude/tone of voice/etc.

I've had several conversations with people involved in this thread (not all CFSJC guys) and really feel like that for the most part alot of this will turn out to be water under the bridge when we talk in person and spend some time working together which is ultimately what this entire thread is about (working on trails as off road enthusiasts).

Of course I haven't worked with everyone and can imagine there is likely some difference of opinion about what is working and what is considered being a spectator with a shovel.
So I guess after all this talk about working on the trails we need to get there and frickin get some junk done.

Regardless, I appreciate the continued willingness of everyone to air their opinions and misunderstandings rather than write off the idea of coordinated support of Uwharrie (not that my appreciation carries the weight of anyone important).

The tree got moved again

Someone moved it by pivoting the small end down hill so the tree was parallel with the hill climb. We put it back blocking the illegal bypass. It will take several people to move it again. Most 4-wheeler riders that I have seen out there won't have enough ambition to move, they will just drive around it

haha yeah, like the one that we watched go around it right after we put it there..

No, that was another one
I'm confused.

The tree in the pic is the one that fell on the Cherokee.

We spun it around which uprooted it the rest of the way and the pic is everyone (seriously like 10 of us) moving the tree to block the unnecessary bypass.

Although that climb is getting fun the right side (on the trail) is still very easy for a Jeep or ATV.

Yeah, I ended up having words with one guy. He had gone around all of the Jeeps on one of the illegal bypasses twice and was trying to go by again when he realized we had blocked the bypass. Then he got pissy and tried to go up the hill climb while we were removing the new fallen tree and he ran into the tree as we were trying to move it off trail. Complete jack-ass.

OK, yeah you are right. My mistake.
That is the one that fell on the Chero.
This is the old one that we moved-

Sorry you guys ran into some a-holes on the work day. We have had it happen in the past, but none this one luckily.

We did have some dirt bikers almost get seriously hurt. One dumped out right infront of us. Its like they think the trails are their own personal racing dirt track. And I think its that attitude that expands to the ATVs. Like we (ORVs) are intruding on their race track/fun time. Its not all of them, because we don't want to toss them all under the bus. But a large group of them are give the rest a bad name.

. Its not all of them, because we don't want to toss them all under the bus. But a large group of them are give the rest a bad name.

Sadly the evidence of "a few bad apples" is all over the area with bypasses and impromptu trails to nowhere cut through the woods.

I said several times during the work day that we need signs everywhere that say, "hey moron, even if you think it's not a big deal to be off trail, it is. If you abuse it we will all lose it."

As for the guy that was a jerk, I talked to him later. He was frustrated because he didn't know that he could ride on the road to the next trail temporarily while the bridge is out. Not that Shawn isn't right, he did try to ride right through where we were working and standing. He was pretty cool about the whole thing. He did have a good point that some safe bypasses are necessary. I know that's underway or being evaluated (a topic for another discussion, I'm curious what the master plan for any of that is so we can coordinate our bypass blocking activities with what the FS wants).

Again, signs to explain that a bridge is out and what ATVs can/can't do since they aren't allowed on the road are a simple step to help a guy like I talked to. Signs to explain why bypasses are closed may deter some people who don't know better.

I know we can't educate everyone because let's be honest, some people don't want to be educated (or aren't able to be educated). But the more that people are educated about the negative impact of their behavior the more likely that at least some of them won't continue to behavior.

Meanwhile we'll pile logs and at least make them work for their bypass.

Hey BTW I had told Will but no one else,I totally missed being down for the work day.I have a brake failure on the Jeep.I wish I could have come down and helped out/met all you guys.Someone please let me know when you are headed down to work and not only will I attend, but I will drag some people from Raleigh down with me to help. Thanks a lot for your hard work on the trails!!!!!!!!
