I got a large order in from my diesel buddy to finish buttoning this thing up. I changed the thermostat, tore down the oil-cooler and replaced gaskets, fabricated and mounted a new turbo oil drain pipe, mounted the flywheel housing, flywheel, clutch assembly, starter, alternator and new serpentine belt. With a little plumbing shes ready to fire up!
I got my transmission in last week and i have been dying to mount it. wrestled with it for about 10 mintues and had no problems mounting the clutch assembly and trans.
Came home for "singles awareness weekend" and made some big steps. I was able to build a huge hoist that will assist in lifting the body on and off the frame through out my build numerous times. Got the body off the old frame and onto the new rolling chassis. Got some lord isolators from CrewCab59, and started making my motor mounts but simply ran out of gas, weekend was long.
I think ive decided to run a cruiser hybrid axle. Ive got all the parts to do it, i think it would be the strongest option ive got with the parts i have. What i would like to know is if: Would a 86-94 toyota V6 rear end work with the hybrid build? I know the 85-older rear axles have a really small in diameter axle tube that would fit inside the cruiser tubes. But could i use the longer 86-94 axle shafts with the 85-older axle tubes and use that in the cruiser housing? I understand thats difficult to see, but what do you think? I think it would be nice to have the width of the 86-94 shafts.
Well, got the motor in the frame rails with the tranny and t-case. Man this is tough work! you move the motor to the right some and it looks nice but the height wont work or the tranny is sitting weird. After alot of head scratchin i shoehorned this 4bt into the frame rails. All the pics i have of tonight is the motor hanging from the hoist and resting on the ratchet strap. Ill post pics tomorrow of the beefy mounts i built for it.
Here you can see the 4 bolt holes in the side of the block, i chose to use these instead of the ones on the front near the gearcase.
Made it home today for Easter Break. Started building on my cruiser/mini truck hybrid axle build today. Ive researched some of these that have been built in the past and im kinda taking it a different route than normal. This has been done before...
What I have:
1984 Mini-Truck Rear axle
1988 4-Runner Rear axle
1974 FJ40 Rear axle
What I am doing:
FJ40 center section - 1984 mini-truck axle tubes - 1988 Toyota shafts and larger style brakes
Reasoning:
Strongest Toyota axle i can build with centered section from a FJ40.
Using the 1988 shafts will allow me to have a WMS-WMS of ~58" rather than the stock FJ40 and stock Mini-truck WMS-WMS of ~55"
Also get the better brakes of the later model Toyota trucks

You can see here i drilled and tapped three 3/8-16 holes to use as an adjusting mechanism to help square up the axle...
Where the depth of the splines will be set too.
I got the rear axle completely welded up and the spring perches set. I set the pinion ~1* below the yoke of the transfercase b/c i will be running a CV from the t-case.

Home for a month I think. Just got started back on this thing.
Got my saginaw box mounted after making a plate for it. BTW, cutting the hole out for the steering shaft to go through, not that easy! You def need a large holesaw or plasma or torch.
Here is where i relocated the factory frame boxing piece to the passenger side. Thought it was a neat idea.
Ive got some 55 springs in the near future........sweeeet
D'Animal, i seem to be on the same schedule as you this week. I got my tranny hump patched up for the new tranny shifter hole and the all-so-different t-case shifter spot. My dana300 twin stick setup(jbfab.net) was a really sweet setup, real high quality and shifted great! Its all stainless and looks great. I had to grab some stainless wire and weld up a different design to work for my fj. If my fj didnt have a long nv4500hd and and a dana300 clocking ring then i could run the twinsticks like JB-Fab made them, but i had to modify.
I really wanted to run the shifters out of the stock TLC shifter hole but felt better about how i have them now. It look awhile to get the hump patched up to work and look right. Once i get the hump at 100% done, im gonna cut out a plate that will hold both the T-case and tranny shifter boots down and look pretty cool i hope. Stay tuned for that....
Martin, this thing looks great! Glad to finally see it, looks like your getting close. I'll have to get down your way sometime and check this thing out.
