So my word of the day is disingenuous. Merriam-Webster defines disingenuous as : not truly honest or sincere : giving the false appearance of being honest or sincere.
So the Oscars have me thinking... the entire black community seems to be in a tizzy because there are no black nominees in any of the categories, so they are calling on black celebrities to boycott. Tyrese Gibson has publicly voiced his request that Chris Rock boycott. Al Sharpton has raised his usual flag of distress over the situation. Jada Pinkett Smith is railing over her husband's lack of a nomination for his role in Concussion, even though it was released just a couple weeks ago. The Revenant is the only other movie among those nominated that was released at the same time.
Ironically, the one who seems to be crying the loudest is Smith, even though he actually was nominated both in 2002 for Ali and in 2007 for the Pursuit of Happyness. On the flip side of that coin, the person in Hollywood who has been called out the loudest for being racist, Mel Gibson, has only ever received one Oscar and that was 1996, which he won for Braveheart. So the most racist actor is nominated half as much as Will Smith, yet he is b!tching.
Which brings me to another point. Tyrese Gibson calling out Chris Rock to boycott. Well, Tyrese..... what have you contributed to the motion picture industry? A couple of co-starring roles in the "Fast and the Bi-Curious" sequels and a walk-on part in Transformers? Quite the thespian you are. So if Chris Rock does boycott, who's stand is he really taking, his or yours? Seems a bit...... disingenuous to me.
There again, it's good to take a stand - when it's your stand. Many celebrities use their celebrity status to call out social injustices. Bono has brought to light many a topic. Farm-aid and many other concerts made public the plight of many issues that needed the attention only a celebrity can bring. But pressuring Lebron James into wearing a shirt to protest a kid getting shot in a park because he refused to put down a realistic looking gun? Again - disingenuous....
