With it being so cold, our gas furnace is running a lot, and there is zero moisture left in our house. Winter is always rough on our skin (need to dig up that annual "best dry skin treatment" thread).
Our dog, a Rhodie-Retriever (mutt) mix, is really suffering... constantly scratching, licking his legs, etc.

Anybody have a good treatment for keeping dog's skin moist? Last year the vet suggested giving him extra fish oil, which we did for awhile, but didn't notice much difference.

Feed him coconut oil. Dogs love it and it's damn good for them.

Lard , in the food. Also 100 calories per table spoon for cold nights.

That or bacon grease in the food from what I was told. I was concerned about how much cooking oil my dog was consuming in his diet and my vet told me not to worry about it, that dogs don't get heart disease like we do. It just makes his coat nice and slick.

Couldn't do that with my bluetick, she's got a fairly sensitive stomach.

The wife says "dogs can develop skin issues just like humans. So it could be eczema or similar, and not necessarily due to lack of oil in diet, but oil in diet and oatmeal spray will help with itchy skin"

She's not a vet but our 12 year old lab chow had hot spots.. to her understanding, dog food manufacturers can swap up their suppliers and not change any labeling although the quality changes.. which can cause issues as well.. and their saliva dries their skin too, adding to the problem if their chewing/ teething on their spots, she says

What's the RH inside your house? My in-laws run a couple of humidifiers. I think they put about 4 gallons per day out (combined).

I guess I should ask what kinda food the dog gets.

I feed my dogs straight coconut oil and will apply it to the dry spots! They will lick it off but whatever absorbs wil help! My lab/collie had dry skin so bad he almost was bald on his belly from biting and scratching coconut oil fixed him right up! I use it on our pig too well ole lady does I don't like the damn thing lol

Mr Luk can't eat cheap food.. one time years ago got $7/50lb and his skin got terrible!! He lost almost all his fur on his belly and rump... Went back to pedigree. Not the greatest but at least it's affordable and seems consistently ok to him.

If the first ingredient in the food is anything other than a meat product, it's not good food. I'm not a health nut, but my dogs eat good! I started with Cator & Pollux, but it got too expensive with two dogs, so I went to Taste of the Wild, and now Whole Earth. Sometimes I switch between the last two. The place I buy from (PetSense) has a buy 10, get one free thing. Doesn't sound like much, but it's better than nothing.

TotW and Whole Earth are both 40-45/30 lb bag. That'll last about a month between my 3 dogs eating twice a day.

If you want to see how whatever food you feed your dog stacks up, check out Dog Food Advisor. They're a good, unbiased source.

We had good results w our Sharpie mix's dry skin w an oatmeal shampoo the vet recommended. She hated to be bathed at first but after a few times she learned that it was soothing and she enjoyed being pampered. Lukewarm water shampoo and cool rinse.

Another vote for Taste of the Wild here. Another vote for Amazon subscribe also.

Another down vote for Pedigree. If the dog is worth having, they are worth quality food.

Ma bitch is grain intolerant, she get dat Nutro Grain Free. No problems with skin but she gets a little coconut oil on the side.

Man you guys feed your dogs the high dollar stuff! My lab eats the $20/50lbs alpo come and get it. He had dry skin as a pup that the vet had me put fish oil on his food to treat. He eats 2-3lbs of fried hushpuppys per day along with his regular food and is as slick as a show dog. I know everyone doesn't just have hushpuppys laying around but a good drizzle of cooking oil over regular food would do the trick

My lab eats Tractor Supply 4 Health food.
He likes it and my vet says its kick ass.

Regarding the OP...what about that Dynovite stuff? No idea if it works but they advertise the sit out of it on XM...

The hushpuppies could end up being counterproductive if you have a dog that's allergic to grains. That's most of the reason we're using the expensive dog food.

I tried dynovite when my pit was a puppy. I was feeding him beneful. Couldnt really tell a difference. Started using fish oil and it helped. Switched to good food (apex salmon and sweet potato, made in SC) never had to add anything to his food again. He's 11 now and if it werent for the grey on his face you would swear he's a puppy. He runs circles around my neighbors german shepard puppies.

No arguing those points. I'd be in a bind if my dog was allergic to corn. He eats dried corn like most dogs eat kibble. Its always fun to watch truckers faces when I ask them if they've ever seen a dog that ate whole corn then reach down while unloading a truck and hand Goose a handfull to chow down on. Anywhere corn spills around the elevators he cleans it up like a vacuum cleaner. I can always tell if it's him or the neighbors dog that shits in the yard. His turds look like a payday bar!

Yep and anything that is "meal" is pretty bad (cancer causing)
