Economy: Who's slow, who's slowing, Who's booked and who's out of control?

^^Glad to know someone else is from JoCo....have to meet up one day and wheel, know a couple a little local spots

im game, just shoot me a pm. hell, if nothing else we should have a meet an greet.

[/hijack]

as far as we are concerned (milling business) things havent really slowed down for us any more than normal but the high fuel prices and the silly notion that we should use corn for gas have made the prices of everything we purchase increase. but in our favor is the fact that people still have to eat no matter how bad it gets.

My hardwood business in going strong. I seem to be doing a lot of custom work like borders and the such. The people with money don't seem to mind spending it!!

Planning/GIS within a Civil Engineering firm, with DOT as a major client. Needless to say, things aren't looking so hot...

Cell Site tech-

We are building a metric crapton of sites right now. OT authorized, and sometimes required. New company offers quarterly bonuses (I didn't know companies still had those) based on performance.
It will slow a little into the winter, but still easily 40 hours a week with on call every 5th week.

I think that all depends on what "form" of CE you're doing... I'm going to venture a guess... Residential Development? DOT work?
I only ask b/c Heavy Civil (Landfills, Dams, etc.) are booming and backlogged for a long time....
Dealing w/ both sides of it Design/Build.. Construction's really hurting... and work's going for very very cheap... I dont see how the small outfits sway in business in times like these.

Exactly, except we refuse to do DOT work. Used to be mainly Residential Subdivisions but we've been doing alot more Site Plans (Shopping Centers / Flex Buildings / Additions). Just got word our Sister Office just let our first Tech off so I may be surfing NC4x4 a little less and watching over my shoulder more.:shaking:
Only exception is Church Additions are the only thing not affected.
I scrap metal on the side and sell Ford Truck Restoration Parts on Ebay but Ebay is seasonal.

Camera systems for paper, converting, and packaging. Busier than we have ever been. And understaffed, looking to increase by 20-25% in the coming weeks.

Pharmaceuticals... as we're still working compounds through the various phases of FDA'dom, nothing has changed... much.

Gas prices still hurt those of us under $100k/year and affect our loved ones...

Global Project Manager:
Software - Real Estate. Surprising busy... We just gained two large Fortune 500 accounts which I'll be babying / assigned to for who knows how long.

Our sales dep. is SLOW, but all other deps are busy and we're hiring.

Copier Service and Sales

Been a slow summer but seems to be picking up fairly quick. School systems and colleges calling in getting things repaired and ready for the start of school. I imagine its going to slow down again aftr school gets rolling.

Toner and supplies sales seem to be down. Everyone must be buying at office depot. thats a good thing though....their stuff is crap and people will be calling me when they find out what the office depot stuff does to their copiers and printer. lol, i make out either way =)

Furniture sucks.

Restaurant........We have up and down days. Summer is usually our slowest time cause everyone is saving up to go on vacation. We are a relatively inexpensive place though, you can get a meal for like $7 or $8. A lot of the high end restaurants are having problems cause in a "recession" that is usually one of the first things to go. Rising food costs are raping us though, people bitch about raising the price of something 50 or so cents but they don't think about the food cost.

yeah, ive noticed several resturaunts around winston shut down.

Truck sales are down (Volvo and Mack), but thanks to the EPA regulations we are slammed in my group, and in a month and a half will be starting my 4th year straight of working OT.

Im in the fiber optic industry as well... and like Chip said, we are doing well, and the industry seems to be booming (atleast for us)... but if ppl stop having the extra amenities in their homes/lives, our industry could start to waiver...
Leslie got laid off this week. She is in the auto industry, specifically she made the insulation that goes under the carpet and in doors. A friend of mine who does about the same thing for a different company, has had about 70 laid off in his plant.
Me, Fiber optics, we are booming, so they say

What part do yall have in the fiber optic industry?

I just started helping a friend that is doing underground bores, and pulling back conduit for fiber optic. We are very busy working for the city, and updating a lot of neighborhoods.

I work for Corning, so we design, test, install, and support and teach classes on fiber....

Simply put, I make it.
We do it all from building the preform( a piece of glass from 106mm to 123mm around, and up to 1350mm long) loading it into a furnace and drawing it down to 125um (the size of a hair) put coatings on it, put it in tubes, and then into cables.

My job is making the fiber. (draw) on any given night, we make up to and exceed 17 million kilometers of fiber.

Do you guys offer tours to the public Chip? That would be cool to see since I use your product in my line of work. Got a tour of the Tyco/AMP plant earlier this year to see how they make Cat5e and Cat6 cable and I was impressed.

Commercial Aircraft Seating - Things have slowed some from where we were a couple years ago, but not by much. Our OEM work has definitely slowed down due to the A380 and 787 delays and the airlines milking their older seats for as long as they can. The real money is with our aftermarket operations whose workload is through the roof. All the airlines are either revamping their older seats and/or stripping them down to the bare minimum for the weight/fuel savings.

I worked in the plant on an upfit ~7 years ago...it was neat as hell to watch. One of the interesting things were run areas where the fiber was so small it literally couldnt be seen from a distance. It looked like 2 machines 40ft away were spinning needlessly but when you got right up on it it was actually spinnimg lines. I had a helper damn near drive through a line with a lift.....once it was explaineed to me what it would have cost, he never operated a piece of equipment inside that plant.

I caught an episode of How It's Made or whatever the show is called and they were doing fiber. It looked really interesting.
