This is the buildup thread for my very close friend, Jonathan Efird, who was killed in a bonfire accident recently.
Efird had a very large group of close friends, myself and the rest of "the crew" greatly enjoyed wheelin, espically in TOYOTA's Before Efird passed he had an '86 Turbo toyota pickup that he was in the planning and parts collecting stages of building into a rockcrawler. The crew and myself have decided to build the truck just the way he wanted it. It was a unanimous decision amongst all his friends to do this in a way to honor and remember him. The truck also has a lot of sentimental value to his father and when finished, he is going to take it wheelin' with the crew.
Here are the proposed specs of the truck..
1986 toyota pickup turbo 22re
- 2 1/2 ton rockwells u-joint style
- 49" IROKS on 16in beadlocks
- custom 4 link with Air shocks
- Toyota 5 speed with/ dual yota t-cases with 4.7's in the back case
- Interior roll cage with 5 point harness
- dovetailed and possibly bobbed bed
- extended wheelbase to have perfect approach/departure angles
We have most of the parts for the build, there are however a few that we still need to purchase, any donations and/or discounts would be greatly appreciated in order to help us build the truck correctly.
These are the parts needed..
- Some kind of wheel disc brake kit for the front rockwell or tips on how to homemake something that will work and be reliable. The wheels are 16" not sure of the backspacing though
- 2 air shocks - 18"
- Full hydro steering for front axle only, arms, pump, cylinder, lines, valve, ect.. or kit of some kind
- 8 jonny joints, 9/16 or 5/8 prefferably, we can make anykind of joint work if need be
- Front and rear winches
These are all the parts I can think of at the moment, I'll post more when we figure out what we have.

I should have some pics of the current truck up tomorrow. We are going over to his parents house tomorrow to pick up the truck and all his parts.

Justin, Andy, Statler and myself picked up Efird's truck from his parents today. Thanks to Jacob and Adam Stirewalt for bringing over the tractor and skid steer to help move the axles. We took the truck to Andy's shop and we plan to start cutting out the old suspension tomorrow.

hell yea

I think you should start a donation thread? I know times are hard for a lot of people but I think I would be a good thing. Im jobless right now since I just graduated but I will definitely give what I can. I'm sure every little bit will help...Let us know. I did not know Johnathan, but this is an awesome thing you guys are doing for him. Chad.

you were asking about brakes for the rocks. Pinion Brakes are the way to go Run a Mazda Rotor and a toyota caliper Works great on my rocks stops 44s just fine and its way cheaper than the disc brake conversion

If it's gonna see much road time, id go with wheel brakes... also if you are gonna run ARBs...

call up Scott at Mudprometalworks.com. he can help ya with a wheel brakes setup....

That's awesome that you are going through with the project!!!
Do you have any specs on the motor in that truck? RTEs are rare as hell and its good to see one out there. I have a lot of experience with those motors if you have any issues if it could help with the build.
I can help out big on air shocks and joints no problem. PM me

goddamn what an intercooler(build some sort of protection on that thing lol)

this is a kickass thing y'all are doing

Efird had already bought a pinion brake kit so thats what we're going to run.

cant wait to see the build up. i hate to hear about his accident. i actually think he may have bought the axles and tires from me but i am not sure?

This is a sick build guys, can't wait to see the pics of his friends and father wheeling it when its done. Way to take a tough situation and turn it into something positive like I am sure he would have wanted. Keep the pictures coming, I know a bunch of us are keeping track of this one :driver:

Thats really awesome man, both what you are doing, and the work done so far. One option I know about for wheel brakes on the front is a guy "Madmac" on Pirate4x4, he will turn down rockwell spindles so that you can run 14bolt hubs on the front. This way you can use a standard 75 K20 front rotor, the only downfall is you have to run a wilwood caliper.

Mudpro can probably turn down your rockdub spindles to match 14 bolts, and deals can be scored on wilwood calipers if you know what companies to talk to in the Concord area. I know "rich" on here had some companies names on his rockwell page

just trying to give any help i can

keep up the good work, I'm definitely subscribing to this one

the pic of josh torchin and justin grindin makes me think this is mayberry lane's 4x4 version of overhaulin'
