Thinking about moving to a WiFi mesh, but I don’t know much about it. Educate me, please. What are the pros/cons? What brands and systems are good/bad? I’m an Apple whore so this is stepping out of my comfort zone.

Wow. Very timely question as we’re wondering the same thing.
60s split level with the only cable jack in the far corner of the downstairs and a lazy homeowner has my WiFi signal wanting.

The Netgear Orbi RBK12 looked like a good fit for us. From the googling I’ve done mesh looked like a better solution than just adding a repeater to our current network.

First and easiest fix is to put some huge ass antennas on your WiFi router. Next is to hard wire all the things that don't move but need a network connection.

I have a netgear orbi at home and just set up another at work.
The satellites can be wireless or hardwired for back haul( repeating the signal).
I know 2 other people with the same system. All have worked well. They still need a restart on occasion.
I have 4 people streaming stuff, wifi cameras and a bunch of other junk and it handles it fine.

If you have an old cheap wifi router about anything you buy will be an improvement.

This is the system I have.
