Engine Oil Analysis

View attachment 284846 Kits should come with a tube to run down the dipstick. Less chance of contaminating the sample. The SOS kit is 22$. And comes with everything. Postage is included. It gets send to Carolina cat labs. You will receive an email with results in around a week. They also analyze auto trans fluid and diff fluid if needed.
So how do you get the oil into the container with the tube down the dipstick? Seems you would need to vacuum it out or start a siphon.

This has me curious to do one on my truck. Think I’m gonna wait till I have about 5k on this oil and do one, then I’ll come back to this thread with updates.

I mean if that’s all you can muster, but I am sure the sperm bank will still take it :D

I'm glad you went there because as I'm reading these, all I could think is "That's what she said"

Put your thumb over the hole in the tube and pull it out.

Ok hvae to nerd out a bit.
Carolina Tractor Company, DBA Carolina Cat does not have or operate an analysis lab.
All Cat distributors use a common lab that is located in....I think..Peoria, IL but dont hold me to that. Just to clarify Carolina Cat is NOT Caterpillar...just like Gregory Poole is not Caterpillar. They are dealers just like Capital Ford or Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet.

Sorry just a pet peeve of mine.
Also most sampling companies do not recommend sampling from the dipstick tube. However many engine manufacturers do.

Why? During normal operation the dipstick tube is not bathed in oil. Particulate and even rust accumulation can happen in the dipstick tube and can invade and contaminate a sample. For an independent lab, this is bad. But for an engine manufacturer this is great because it gives them a reason to void your warranty.

You want to sample direct from the crankcase pan (not an extended drain tube) and you dont want to catch the initial out flow, you want it flow for a few seconds and then catch mid stream...

I figured it was common knowledge that Carolina Cat is NOT Caterpillar Inc. but maybe not.

The samples go to Raleigh.

Yes Cat Inc is in Peoria Illinois

I agree the best way to grab a sample is midway during a drain. However the tube is there for another option.

All I wanted to do is give @rodney eppes an option for samples. Also Rodney, let me know if you want me to pick up a kit for you. I could get a little better pricing.

@BIGWOODY can tell you more precisely, but according to a mechanic I use for the wife's car, a BMW/Merc computer will base the OCI off the way you abuse the car. Wife had a Z4 she drove like a grandma and it would say over 25k between changes. This same mechanic will tell you that if you follow that route you will have this issue by 150k

No lie here.

Notice that's going to a po box?
Wonder why?
Also Carolina Cat doesn't have the Raleigh territory, that's Gregory poole. Why would they build their own lab outside their service AOR?

Nakoma isn't in a pissing match with you Ron

In fact, he's about the LAST person to get all "I'm righter than you are" about anything...even if it IS his actual profession... I mean he lives inside of diesel cylinder heads... (hence why the mobile meth lab is so comfy on camping trips: It's 10x larger than the space he's USE to occupying :huggy:)

If it’s really important for anyone to know where the samples go, call your local cat distributor. The answer lies just a phone call away.

Carolina Cat Greensboro: (336) 294 5240

Thanks

Y’all have a good day!

My wife's Honda Pilot has one of those oil change life % meter things in the display. I had never seen one before. I have been changing the oil when it gets down to under 10% life left. I have not tracked the mileage, but it seems like it goes about 6,000-8,000 miles. I use synthetic oil in her car.

I change the oil in my van and truck at 7,000 miles.

I apologize...I'm not trying to get into a pissing match either.
The fact is CAT seems to have a habit of deception of their customers AND their employees/distributors.
Not just in this instance. It a pet peeve of mine sorry. Ive spent 2 decades competing against them and the lies they frequently propogate. Just yesterday I had to spend 2 hours proving to a design engineer that what they had told him, and given him in print was a complete fabrication.

You REALLY need to check the level between changes and I would buy a vcm disabler. I see a lot of premature engine failure due to that eco mode/vcm crap.

I mean, they do have a few cast parts, but most of their assemblies are complete fabrications. :flipoff2:

You mean like all the guys that get uppity about using "CAT" filters on stuff because they're the absolute best, but in reality a large majority of them are just yellow Baldwin filters?
